LORENCE, JEFF MARCUS, AND ARIITEUIRA FALCHETTO With its large, initially undivided leaves; big, curious, warty fruits; monotypic nature; and mysterious, remote, island habitat, Pelagodoxa henryana has long fascinated palm botanists, collectors and growers, and been one of the holy grails of all who have an interest in palms. The possibility of a second species of Pelagodoxa has generated a substantial amount of interest but the recent literature on the subject has dismissed this prospect and accepted or recognized only one species. However, for 40 years the senior author has propagated and grown P. henryana nearly side by side with a second species of the genus, first in Hawaii, U.S.A and later at his wife’s home in Papeari, Tahiti, French Polynesia, allowing ample opportunity to compare and contrast the two species at various stages of development. An article we wrote reassessing the genus Pelagodoxa was published in the journal PALMS [Hodel et al., Reassessment of Pelagodoxa, PALMS 63(3): 113-146. 2019]. In it we document substantial and critical differences between the two species, P. henryana and P. mesocarpa, establish the validity and resurrect the name of the second species from synonymy, discuss molecular data, phylogeny and phytogeography, ethnobotany and conservation of Pelagodoxa and what impact, if any, they might have had in its speciation and insular distribution. -

Travels through Central America, the Andes and Iceland followed by 17 years in Indonesia gave him a good understanding of volcanology, a boon to later educational tourism when explaining Savai'i to overseas visitors and student groups. His 2014 report on Samoa's Geological History was published in booklet form by the Samoa Tourism Authority as a Visitor's Guide - a guide summarising the main geological events that built the islands but with little coverage of individual natural attractions. This present article is an abridgement of the 2014 report and focuses on Savai'i. It is in three sections; an explanation of plate movement and hotspot activity for visitors unfamiliar with plate tectonics; a brief summary of Savai'i's geological history then an island tour with some geologic input when describing the main sites. It is for nature lovers who would appreciate some background to sightseeing. Synopsis of the Trichocentrum-Clade (Orchidaceae, Oncidiinae)
SyNOPSIS OF THE TRICHOCENTRUM-CLADE (ORCHIDACEAE, ONCIDIINAE) WILLIAM CETZAL-IX,1–3 GERMÁN CARNEVALI,1, 4 AND GUSTAVO ROMERO-GONZÁLEZ1, 4 Abstract: We present a synopsis of the Trichocentrum-clade of Oncidiinae. In this revision, we recognize 85 taxa assigned to four genera: Cohniella with 23 species in five complexes and two natural hybrids; Lophiaris with 27 species and eight natural hybrids, six of which are yet to be named; Trichocentrum with 27 species and two subspecies; and Lophiarella with three species. Cohniella yuroraensis is referred to the synonymy of C. ultrajectina, C. allenii and C. christensoniana to the synonymy of C. nuda, and C. croatii to C. lacera. Trichocentrum perezii is referred to the synonymy of Lophiaris andreana. A key to the genera of the Trichocentrum-clade is presented as well as keys to the complexes or groups of species and, when applicable, natural hybrids of Cohniella, Lophiarella, Lophiaris, and Trichocentrum. Hnawia2 La connaissance naturaliste des plantes de toute région du monde s'acquiert généralement de deux manières qui se complètent, l'approche traditionnelle et l'approche scientifique. En Nouvelle-Calédonie, les savoirs locaux sur les "plantes utiles" (d'intérêt alimentaire, médicinal, artisanal, culturel) se sont construits à partir d'un fond culturel océanien qui s'est appliqué et diversifié localement. Il en résulte théoriquement 28 corpus de connaissances liés aux 28 langues mélanésiennes présentes, regroupées en 8 aires culturelles. Quant à l'approche scientifique de ces mêmes plantes et de la flore en général, elle s'est construite à partir des contacts entre Européens et Océaniens. Un tableau historique des démarches qui ont fait connaître et reconnaître les plantes de Nouvelle-Calédonie ainsi que leurs usages est présenté dans cet article de manière très succincte. La course aux épices et à la soie qui a fait voyager Marco Polo vers l'Asie et la Chine n'est pas sans importance pour la suite des événements dans le Pacifique : voyages d'exploration, le long des routes du poivre, de la muscade et du clou de girofle, recherches du "siècle des lumières" puis perspectives économiques et/ou coloniales, avant d'en arriver aux évolutions actuelles.
