The problems of short supply and high prices probably will not be alleviated in the near future. Nations, including the United States, are finding it necessary to turn to new sources of power. Many of these sources, such as nuclear power and solar energy, cannot meet increased demand within the next ten years. Coal, however, once supplied a major portion of man's energy needs, and may now help to ease the energy situation. Fifty years ago coal mining in Iowa flourished, but today only a few mines remain as a token of former days. Interest in coal, and energy production in general, is spark­ ing new interest and research in Iowa's energy reserves-Iowa's coal. During 1974 the Iowa Legislature funded an Iowa Coal Research Project under the Energy and Mineral Resources Research Institute (EMRRI) at Iowa State University. This project has two primary goals: 1) to establish strip mining methods that allow the land to be returned to productive use at an economical cost, and 2) to establish economical methods of cleaning and burning Iowa coal in conformance with environmental standards. The Iowa Coal Research Project is calling on the expertise of many professional people including environmentalists, engineers, scientists, economists and industrial specialists to achieve its goals. This manual summarizes some of the research that is being conducted during this three year project. A capsule view of the types of re­ search being done can be obtained by examining the titles of currently funded pro­ jects listed in Appendix B. It should be noted that estimates for total reserves of oil, natural gas, and coal are constantly being revised . Estimates differ according to the sources, and usually vary from year to year. Estimates within this publication are an attempt to approximate middle of the road figures, and will not meet with approval from all quarters. Although many of the topics associated with energy are quite controversial, no attempt has been made to provide a comprehensive account of all the positive and negative views of each issue. A more general approach has been used with the idea to inform rather than state so-called "right" or "wrong" answers. The purpose of this manual is to help acquaint the public with Iowa's coal produc­ tion prospects. A list of anticipated questions with page references to answers is in­ cluded at the end of this introduction to provide a quick reference of answers toques­ tions dealing with energy and Iowa coal issues. In many cases the answers to the questions will be sufficient for some people, but greater clarity may be obtained by re­ ading the related material in this manual. Scientific terms have been kept to a minimum to enhance readability. Information of a more detailed nature can be ob­ tained by reading cited references or other publications listed in the bibliography. This publication is intended to provide information for the interested citizenry of lqwa. It is anticipated that concerned individuals, civic groups, and members at all levels of local and state governments wili find this publication a helpful reference for answering individual questions, and providing a base for seminars and group dis­ cussions. This publication can also serve as a valuable resource for science and social studies teachers in Iowa's secondary schools. Ohio ranks 13th in the nation in coal production, and 7th in terms of demonstrated coal reserves with approximately 23.3 billion short tons, or 4.7% of the nation’s total coal reserves. (“Demonstrated Coal Reserve” is a term used to identify the part of the total resource that is potentially mineable when considering economic, legal, and engineering constraints). At present production levels, Ohio has more than 500 years worth of potentially mineable coal remaining. GEOLOGY OF COAL Th e coal-bearing rocks of Ohio were deposited during the Pennsylvanian and Permian Periods, approximately 320 to 245 million years ago. During Pennsylvanian time, or the great Coal Age, a shallow sea covered central Ohio. A series of river deltas extended into this sea carrying sediments that eroded from the ancestral Appalachian Mountains and fl owed northwest into the deltas. Extensive freshwater and brackish-water peat-forming COAL ecosystems formed in these low-lying coastal and near-coastal deltas, which were similar to those of the current Mississippi and Amazon Rivers. Th ese peat swamps remained undisturbed for thousands of years.

The social legacy of mining is equally important to contemporary Lafayette The mines required far more labor than was available locally and quickly attracted experienced miners and laborers from Europe and other parts of the U.S. The result was a community comprised of many ethnic groups, including Welsh, English. Scottish, Irish, central European, Hispanic, Italian, and Swedish workers and their families. Local farmers and ranchers also shared in the coal boom and worked as miners in the winter when coal production was high and agricultural work slow. A sense of this ethnic diversity can be gained by walking through the Lafayette cemetery at Baseline and 111th Street. The variety of family names gives a sense of the many nationalities that have contributed to Lafayette’s history. Although the mining life was hard, families were fun-loving and many social activities centered around schools and churches.

European settlers began to use coal for heating in the late 1740s and, as energy demands increased, coal production climbed from 9.3 million tons in 1850 to 750 million in 1918. Eventually coal replaced wood as the primary energy source, and by the 1940s, coal was providing up to 75 percent of U.S. energy needs. In the United States, bituminous coal was the first target of the coal mining industry. This changed between 1843 and 1868 when more anthracite began to be mined. Used in iron smelting, this cleaner and smokeless alternative became the preferred fuel in cities. However, limited anthracite resources could not fulfill increasing demand. The production of sub-bi- tuminous coal began to slowly rise, and in 2010 it was greater than bituminous coal produc- tion. Until the 1950s, coal was mined primarily using underground methods. In the hills of southern Jefferson and northern Bedford town- ships, Coshocton County, Ohio, is found a coal vein, to the struc- ture and possible economic importance of which I wish to call attention. It is most widely known as the Bedford Cannel, the largest tracts of it being found in Bedford Township. Though there are, in nearly all the coal-bearing counties of the State, small local deposits of cannel coal, yet only six places assume sufficient importance to be called cannel producing dis- tricts. Five of these are located respectively at Flint Ridge, Lick- ing County; Millersburg, Holmes County; Sand Run, Hocking County, Milton Township, Jackson County, and in Eastern Colum- biana County. The first two deposits are of very small impor- tance; the Darlington Cannel, of Columbiana County, is so inferior to that just over the Pennsylvania line that it assumes no impor- tance as yet, and the developments at Sand Run and Jackson County are of about equal and growing importance. The sixth and last deposit, the Bedford Cannel is the largest, and, probably, the best body of cannel in Ohio; but its remoteness from railroad travel has prevented its reputation or use from extending far.
