GALVÃO Abstract: The members of the subfamily Triatominae (Heteroptera, Reduviidae) are vectors of Try- panosoma cruzi (CHAGAS 1909), the causative agent of Chagas disease or American trypanosomiasis. As important vectors, triatomine bugs have attracted ongoing attention, and, thus, various aspects of their systematics, biology, ecology, biogeography, and evolution have been studied for decades. In the present paper the authors summarize the current knowledge on the biology, ecology, and systematics of these vectors and discuss the implications for human health. Control of insect vectors is often the best, and some- times the only, way to protect the population from these destructive diseases. Vector control is a moving target with globalization and demographic changes causing changes in infection patterns (e.g., rapid spread, urbanization, appearance in nonen- demic countries); and the current unprecedented degradation of the global environment is affecting rates and patterns of vector-borne disease in still largely unknown ways. 15.1.2 Contributions of Genetic Studies of Vectors to Understanding Disease Epidemiology and Effective Disease Control Methods Studies of vector genetics have much to contribute to understanding vector-borne disease epidemiology and to designing successful control methods. Geneticists have performed phylogenetic analyses of major species; have identified new spe- cies, subspecies, cryptic species, and introduced vectors; and have determined which taxa are epidemiologically important. Cytogeneticists have shown that the evolution of chromosome structure is important in insect vector speciation. -

A Study of the Rufous-Fronted Thornbird and Associated Birds
A STUDY OF THE RUFOUS-FRONTED THORNBIRD AND ASSOCIATED BIRDS ALEXANDER F. SKUTCH ANGING from isolated trees in northern Venezuela are compact masses of H interlaced twigs so large and conspicuous that they can hardly escape the attention even of the traveler speeding along the excellent highways of that country. From a Venezuelan companion he may learn that the oblong masses of sticks are nests of the guaiti; but without patient watching he is not likely to see the retiring, wren-like builder of these incongruously large structures. The guaiti bears the English book-name of Rufous-fronted Thorn- bird (Phacellodomus rufifrons) and is a member of a large Neotropical family, the Furnariidae or ovenbirds, second to no other avian family in the world in the diversity of its nidification. The brief accounts that I had read of this remarkable bird, suggesting unusual social habits, whetted my desire to learn more about it. A grant from the Frank M. Chapman Memorial Fund of the American Museum of Natural History provided financial support for an extended visit to Venezuela. Cor- respondence with Paul Schwartz gave hope that we could find a suitable place to live while studying thornbirds. He met us at Maiquetia Airport soon after midnight on 12 March 1966 and, after showing us over the Parque National “Henri Pittier” (Ranch0 Grande), took us to “La Araguata.” This large cattle farm, belonging to the bird artist Walter Arp and his wife Elena, is situated, at an elevation around 1,400 feet, in a basin among low mountains near Pirapira, about 20 miles south of Valencia in the state of Carabobo. -

This paper reports on the first occurrence ofPsammolestes tertius in the Chapada Diamantina region, located in the city of Seabra, Bahia State, in northeastern Brazil. Following an active search, 24 P. tertius specimens were collected from Phacellodomus rufifrons (rufous- fronted thornbird) nests. The insects did not present any symptoms of infection by Trypanosoma cruzi. P. tertius males were cytogenetically analyzed, and the results were compared with those of other specimens from the Brazilian State of Ceará. Levels of genetic variation and population structure were determined for 181 Triatoma sordida insects from four populations of southeastern Brazil, through the analysis of 28 allozyme loci. None of these loci presented fixed dif- ferences between any pair of populations, and only two revealed polymorphism, accounting for low levels of heterozygos- < ity ( He = 0.027), and low genetic distances ( D 0.03) among populations. FST and Contingency Table results indicated the existence of genetic structure among populations ( FST = 0.214), which were incompatible with the isolation by distance model (Mantel test: r = 0.774; P = 0.249). In Argentina, human endemic areas have recently been detected. Lymnaeid vectors were studied in two human endemic localities of Catamarca province: Locality A beside Taton and Rio Grande villages; Locality B close to Recreo town. Methods: Lymnaeids were characterised by the complete sequences of rDNA ITS-2 and ITS-1 and fragments of the mtDNA 16S and cox1. Shell morphometry was studied with the aid of a computer image analysis system. Climate analyses were made by nearest neighbour interpolation from FAO data. Koeppen & Budyko climate classifications were used. De Martonne aridity index and Gorczynski continentality index were obtained. Lymnaeid distribution was assessed in environmental studies. Results: DNA sequences demonstrated the presence of Lymnaea neotropica and L. viator in Locality A and of L. neotropica in Locality B. Two and four new haplotypes were found in L. neotropica and L. viator, respectively. For interspecific differentiation, ITS-1 and 16S showed the highest and lowest resolution, respectively. For intraspecific analyses, cox1 was the best marker and ITS-1 the worst. Shell intraspecific variability overlapped in both species, except maximum length which was greater in L.
