RELATIONS BETWEEN OTTOMAN CORSAIRS AND THE IMPERIAL NAVY IN THE 16th CENTURY MEHMET KURU Submitted to the Graduate School of Arts and Social Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Sabancı University June 2009 RELATIONS BETWEEN OTTOMAN CORSAIRS AND THE IMPERIAL NAVY IN THE 16TH CENTURY APPROVED BY: Yrd. DATE OF APPROVAL: 10.08.2009 i © Mehmet Kuru, 2009 All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT RELATIONS BETWEEN OTTOMAN CORSAIRS AND THE IMPERIAL NAVY IN THE 16th CENTURY Mehmet Kuru History, M.A. Thesis, Spring 2009 Thesis Supervisor: Y. Hakan Erdem This thesis endeavors to present an analysis of the nature of the relations between ottoman corsairs and the imperial navy in the 16th century. Recruitment of corsairs as naval officers by Ottoman central authority to make up for the insufficient numbers of skilled seamen was presented as a fact in various works. However, there is no study to explain construction period of this relationship and to define the system. This thesis aims to construct a model to explicate this relationship. As of the mid-fifteenth century, Ottoman seapower started to strengthen and Empire conquered several crucial harbors and islands in Black sea and Mediterranean until the end of this century. Ottoman Imperial navy gained a strong infrastructure thanks to these conquests. Apart from Imperial navy, Ottoman corsairs' attacks that were based on these harbors increased and they strengthened gradually. In 1495, an old corsair, Kemal Reis was taken into Ottoman service, thus he became a pioneer for the recruitment of corsairs to Imperial Navy. -

The Long Road: An Analysis of the 1557 Book of Mirrors by Seydi Ali Reis Abstract In 1552, Piri Reis was relieved from the Admiralty of the Ottoman Imperial Navy. Seydi Ali Reis was appointed to replace him and his assignment was to return fifteen galleys from Basra to Egypt. This should have been a relatively short journey. Seydi failed miserably, however. He lost most of the ships in battle with the Portuguese and bad weather, which he documents in his travelogue The irM ror of Countries. With nowhere left ot turn, he sold the remaining ships in Surat on the west coast of India. -

SALİH ÖZBARAN, AL-ATRAK AL- 'OSMANIITUN VE'L BURTUKALIITUN FI'L-HAUCI'L'-ARABI 1534-1585 Translation by 'Abdu'I-Cebbar Naci English Title: The Ottoman Turks and the Portuguese in the Arab Gulf 1534-1581 Centre for Arab GuIf Studies Publications, Basrab University (27) 1979 Doç. Dr. Mehdi lLHAN* The work is the synopsis of Salih Özbaran's Ph.D. Thesis pre- sented to London School of Orienta! and Mrican Studies in 1969 as pointed out in the forward written by the publishers. The work is no doubt based on the Ottoman and Portuguese archival material. The author, according to the translator, lacks in referring to the Arabic sources and material. The translator fills in these gapsı. The work was, originally, published in the Journal of Asian Studies (Wiesbaden) volume 6, (1972), pp. 45-88. The author de~s with the struggle between the Ottoman and the Portuguese. He studies the arrival of the latter in the Red Sea and the Gulf and of course later the arrival of the former first to Bagdad in 1534 and then to Basra in 1546~ The author eventually concentrates on the historical and military events that took place between these two super powers of their time. The translator in his Introduction further points out the brief history of the Ottoman conquest in the Red Sea, Yemen and the * MiddIe East Technical University, ANKARA. 1. The subject has been much enlarged and studied from a different angle by the au- thor and presented as Post doctorate thesis and published unde~.the title "Osmanlı İmpara- torluğu ve Hindistan Yolu: Onaltıncı Yüzyılda Ticaret Yolları Urerinde Türk Portekiz Re- kabet ve İlişkileri" in Tarih Dergisi, 31/March 1977, İstanbul 1978, pp. -
The Travel-Account from Beijing to the Bosphorus 451624
Cambridge University Press 978-0-521-78041-4 - Indo-Persian Travels in the Age of Discoveries, 1400-1800 Muzaffar Alam and Sanjay Subrahmanyam Excerpt More information CHAPTER 1 Introduction: the travel-account from Beijing to the Bosphorus 451624 Travel is the patron of man, it is the court where status is gained; travel is treasure, and the master of skill. If a tree were able to move, it would not be the victim of the saw and the axe. ... Hell in this world is the same as travel. That’s why Travel (safar ) looks like Hell (saqar ) in writing. 1 Muhammad Mufid Mustaufi Yazdi (c. 1670) ACONSPECTUS A thousand years ago, a great Muslim intellectual and polymath, native of the Central Asian region of Khwarizm, embarked on a study of distant and exotic matters, namely matters Indian. A contemporary and some- time correspondent of the celebrated Avicenna (Ibn Sina), this intellectual was no armchair scholar but came to derive his knowledge of India from first-hand experience and travel, related in large measure to his associ- ation with Sultan Mahmud of Ghazna (c. 971–1030), who raided northern India on several occasions. As he wrote in the opening passages of his own work, “No one will deny that in questions of historic authenticity hearsay does not equal eyewitness; for in the latter the eye of the observer apprehends the substance of that which is observed, both in the time when and in the place where it exists, whilst hearsay has its peculiar drawbacks.” These drawbacks included the fact that lies were frequently told and transmitted, whether from self-interest and the desire for profit, 1 For both verses, making opposite claims, see Mirza Muhammad Mufid Mustaufa ibn Najm-ud-Din Mahmud Bafiqi Yazdi, Ja¯mi’i Mufı¯dı¯: Persian text of XI century A.H. -

D., Department of History Supervisor: Asst. Prof. Dr. Paul Latimer January 2018 This dissertation produces a detailed historical narrative of the Ottoman Apulian Campaign and the Attack on Corfu in 1537. Although the Apulian Campaign, a natural consequence of the Ottoman-Habsburg rivalry, which characterized the sixteenth-century Ottoman policies and discourse of universal sovereignty, was originally planned as an Ottoman-French joint military operation, it remained as an individual Ottoman attack on the south eastern Italy since the French King did not offer his already promised military support during the campaign. -

Preveze Deniz Zaferi 28 Eylül 1538 P!Eveze Deniz Zaferi
