  • Goodbye Pork Pie Hat Words & Music: Joni Mitchell & Charles Mingus
Goodbye Pork Pie Hat Words & Music: Joni Mitchell & Charles Mingus Joni set words to many of Mingus' jazz tunes on the 1979 album Mingus. Luckily, Charles Mingus was able to hear the results of the collaboration before his death that same year. If you don't know Mingus' work, go discover it. Works like "Fables of Faubus", "Better Git It In Your Soul" & "Slop" are sublime. The noted Jeff Beck cover of this tune earned the rare honor of a complete transcription in the November 2004 issue of Guitar Player. Chords are courtesy of Vivek Ayer. It is hard to map them to the words exactly, due to the free nature of the singing, but use Vivek's map & notes below. "This is a blues song with cool/weird changes written by Charles Mingus famously covered Beck, John Mclaughlin and Joni Mitchell. Editorial ™ Bienvenidos…

MUSIC + FESTIVAL 2019 THE UNIVERSITY OF ARIZONA TWELFTH ANNUAL COMPOSERS FESTIVAL OCTOBER 12-13 TUCSON, ARIZONA VarèseEdgar · AaronKernis Jay · MingusCharles COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS Fred Fox School of Music Music + Festival 2019: Edgard Varèse, Aaron Jay Kernis, Charles Mingus Twelfth Annual Composers Festival The University of Arizona Fred Fox School of Music October 12-13, 2019 The 2019 Music + Festival: Varese, Kernis, and Mingus will present the lives and music of these three composers within a rich and broad intellectual framework. The festival consists of a symposium providing the historical and artistic context in which these composers lived as well as what to listen for in this music; and four concerts: one chamber, one devoted to music of Charles Mingus, one featuring a mixture of electronic and concert music, and one including large ensembles. The festival features the faculty members and major student ensembles of the Fred Fox School of Music and guest artists and scholars. Despite his output of only slightly more than a dozen compositions, Edgard Varèse is regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century. His concept of “organized sound” led to experiments in form and texture. He was constantly on the lookout for new sound sources, and was one of the first to extensively explore percussion, electronics, and taped sounds. He was, as Henry Miller called him, “The stratospheric Colossus of Sound.” Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Aaron Jay Kernis draws artistic inspiration from a vast and often surprising palette of sources, among them the limitless color spectrum and immense emotional tangle of the orchestra, cantorial music in its beauty and dark intensity, the roiling drama of world events, and the energy and drive of jazz and popular music.

  • Safaris to the Heart of All That Jazz
Safaris to the heart of all that jazz.... JoniMitchell.com 2014 Biography Series by Mark Scott, Part 6 of 16 In January of 1974, Joni began an extensive tour of North America with the L.A. Express, wrapping up with three concerts at the New Victoria Theatre in London, England. The final concert at the New Victoria was videotaped and an edited version was broadcast on the BBC television program The Old Grey Whistle Test in November of 1974. Larry Carlton and Joe Sample were playing with The Crusaders at the time and both opted not to go on the road with Joni and the L.A. Express. Guitarist Robben Ford replaced Larry Carlton and Larry Nash filled in for Joe Sample on piano. In a 2011 interview for JoniMitchell.com, Max Bennett said that although the pay was good for this tour, the musicians could have made more money playing gigs in L.A. and doing session work in the recording studios. Max said that the musicians loved the music, however, and that they were treated royally in every way throughout the tour. Excellent food, first class accommodations, limousines, private buses and private planes were all provided for the band’s comfort. Max also made a point of mentioning the quality of the audiences that attended the concerts. Attention was focused on the performances so completely that practically complete silence reigned in the theaters and auditoriums until after the last note of any given song was performed. For Max Bennett, “As far as tours go - I've been on several tours - this was the epitome of any great tour I've ever been on.

An album as cosmically evocative as its title, The Celestial Squid marks both a promising new partnership and a return to the outer-limits sensibility that informed Russell's earliest work. With sixteen albums as a leader and more than countless session performances to his credit, including the early James Bond film scores, Russell is returning to his bone-rattling, noise-rocking roots for the first time since 1971. You'll be shaken and stirred as Kaiser, Russell, and eight super friends deliver a no-holds-barred, free-range sonic cage match. They evoke improvised music's past, present, and future while proving that free jazz can still be good, clean, liberating fun. Russell created some of the early '70s' most outrageously outside music. Live at the ICA: June 11th 1971 is a particularly hallmark work of guitar shock-and-awe. Russell's "stabbing, singing notes and psychotic runs up the fretboard have nothing to do with scalular architecture," wrote All Music's Thom Jurek, "but rather with viscera and tonal exploration." Russell anticipated the wildest and most intrepid vibrations of Terje Rypdal, Dave Fuzinski, Sonic Youth, Keiji Haino, Tisziji Muñoz, Alan Licht (who contributes liner notes), and their boundary-dissolving ilk.
