  • Marianne Faithfull Biography
    Marianne Faithfull’s long and distinguished career has seen her emerge as one of the most original female singersongwriters this country has produced; Utterly unsentimental yet somehow affectionate, Marianne possesses that rare ability to transform any lyric into something compelling and utterly personal; and not just on her own songs, for she has become a master of the art of finding herself in the words and music of others. Marianne Faithfull’s story, has of course, been well documented, not least in her entertaining and insightful autobiography FAITHFULL (1994). Born in Hampstead in December 1946 Faithfull’s career as the crown princess of swinging London was launched with As Tears Go By; the first song ever written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, five albums followed whilst Marianne also embarked on a parallel career as an actress, both on film in GIRL ON A MOTORCYCLE (1968) and on stage in Chekhov’s THREE SISTERS (1967) and HAMLET (1969) By the end of the Sixties personal problems halted Marianne’s career and her drug addiction took over. Faithfull emerged tentatively in the mid-Seventies with a country album called DREAMIN’ MY DREAMS (1976) but it was her furious re-surfacing on BROKEN ENGLISH in 1979 that definitively brought her back. Further new wave explorations followed with DANGEROUS ACQUAINTANCES (1981) and A CHILD’S ADVENTURE (1983). But despite her new creative vigour, Marianne was not entirely free of the chemicals that had ravaged her in the sixties. Displaying a sadness tempered by optimism, and a despair rescued by humour Marianne returned, finally clean with a collection of classic pop, blues and art songs on the critically lauded STRANGE WEATHER (1987).

Luckily, Charles Mingus was able to hear the results of the collaboration before his death that same year. If you don't know Mingus' work, go discover it. The noted Jeff Beck cover of this tune earned the rare honor of a complete transcription in the November 2004 issue of Guitar Player. Chords are courtesy of Vivek Ayer. The festival consists of a symposium providing the historical and artistic context in which these composers lived as well as what to listen for in this music; and four concerts: one chamber, one devoted to music of Charles Mingus, one featuring a mixture of electronic and concert music, and one including large ensembles. The festival features the faculty members and major student ensembles of the Fred Fox School of Music and guest artists and scholars. Despite his output of only slightly more than a dozen compositions, Edgard Varèse is regarded as one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century. His concept of “organized sound” led to experiments in form and texture. He was constantly on the lookout for new sound sources, and was one of the first to extensively explore percussion, electronics, and taped sounds. He was, as Henry Miller called him, “The stratospheric Colossus of Sound.” Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Aaron Jay Kernis draws artistic inspiration from a vast and often surprising palette of sources, among them the limitless color spectrum and immense emotional tangle of the orchestra, cantorial music in its beauty and dark intensity, the roiling drama of world events, and the energy and drive of jazz and popular music.

Once again the Doubly Gifted Committee wishes to thank the staff of the 'Waverley Library, the Friends of Waverley Library and the Waverley Council for making both the Doubly Gifted Exhibition and the Lecture possible. The Exhibition and the Bell Lecture in jazz were initiated by the late Harry Stein and therefore the Doubly Gifted Committee continues to present these as a tribute to his memory and as a tribute to the great Australian jazz musician, Graeme Bell. This year we are honoured to have as our lecturer, a well-known and highly - respected successful author, Mandy Sayer. She has published a number of novels and continues to delight her reading public with a variety of subjects. Mandy Sayer is the daughter of jazz drummer, the late Gerry Sayer, who travelled overseas with Mandy at his side. She has experienced a most unusual jazz life and will surely draw on some of these experiences to dehver a very informative and entertaining lecture. Mandy Sayer will be introduced by last year's lecturer Peter J.F. Newton.
