Known as a pre-cursor to spring, the red-winged blackbird is one of the more abundant bird species in North America. Males are easily identified by their red and yellow shoulder patches (known as epaulettes), silhouetted on their glossy black bodies. Females are dark brown and often have a white eyebrow.
