Told through the first-person narrative of the filmmaker, who was raised by her bound-foot grandmother, the film captures otherwise lost voices and the haunting memories of twelve bound-feet Chinese women aged 78 to 106, including that of the 90 year-old paper cut folk artist, Yang Hui Xiu. It seeks to understand their struggles in and out of marriage, their confusion in face of conflicts between their ideals and their realities, as well as their tense friendships, which go through moments of mutual caring, understanding and discord. The director: “When I was small, I watched chicks hatching, excited and happy to see them come into the world, tiny lives, to see them grow up slowly, mature and come into themselves. Of course, I was just a chick myself. And as I went through elementary, middle and high school, even university, I often thought of those chicks, with excitement and pleasure. When did I myself hatch? The students manage to have classes first in a ruined manufactory then in the street. Unfortunately, even these makeshift classrooms are taken away one after another. From summer to winter, the number of students drops from 720 to 16. Many either move to more expensive schools farther way or simply return to their rural hometowns. Winter settles further in. Students below third grade can only have classes in a minibus. Those from grade four to six go to the teacher's home instead. Despite all these setbacks, the children still try their best to enjoy school and look forward to a somewhat bright future. 崔子恩 《我们是共产主义省略号》 94 minutes, 2007 从夏天到冬天,从 720 人减少到 16 个人,源海实验学校的打工子弟经历了一系列残酷的事 件:被赶出校园,被赶出作为临时教室的厂房,露天上课,甚至连露天上课所赖以坐席的水泥 电线杆也要被抽走。原本济济一堂的孩子们,流离失所。有人失学在家,有人转到路远收费高 的学校,有人与父母分离回了原籍老家。直到寒冬来临,三年级以下的学生只好挤进一辆小型 公共汽车里上课,四到六年级的学生来到一位老师家里坚持全日制上课。在寒风中,孩子们依 然要跑回学校大门外来做操和嬉戏,他们始终没有泯灭把学校当乐土的赤子之心。 NOVEMBER 12, 2008 Torch Troupes 火把剧团 Directed by Xu Xin, 110 minutes, 2007 “Torch Troupes” got their name during the Cultural Revolution, when traditional Sichuan Opera was prohibited in public and troupes could only tour remote rural areas, performing underground at night by torchlight. Today, the Opera struggles under different, yet just a difficult, conditions of survival. In 2001, six national Sichuan Opera companies were integrated into one that rarely performs. Smaller local troupes were dismissed. Today, the informal show troupes created by Sichuan Opera actors dismissed by national companies in 1990s have become the new struggling “torch troupes.” Three or four of them continue to perform in teahouses scattered in the old neighborhoods of Chengdu. A three- hour performance of a dozen actors attracts an audience of no more than 100 elderly persons, each paying three yuan, part of which goes to the teahouse. With ageing audience and teahouse venues disappearing, some actors switch to “dance shows” or turn to running small businesses. Master of Sichuan Opera, Li Baoting began his career at eight but now mingles with showgirls in popular and cheap bars. On the other hand, actor Wang Bin refuses to give up, going on with his troupe in a temporary stand in this big city where everybody seems to be in a rush. Between the acts, Wang Bin sits silently backstage… 3 徐辛《火把剧团》 110 minutes, 2007 “火把剧团”的称呼来自于文革期间,当时传统的川剧剧目在公共演出场所被禁,但偏远的农 村却在私下演出,因常在夜间,需用火把照明,渐渐有此称呼。现在的“ 火把剧团”就是在 20 世纪 90 年代后,在国营川剧团渐至解散、演员下岗后自行组建的民间演出组织。它的产 生、发展和消亡都与时代息息相关。成都还有三四个 “火把剧团”,一般都在老居民区里的 茶馆里演出。王斌,一个坚持以川剧表演为生的人,不得不面临被社会淘汰的命运。老茶馆终 于被拆,每天演出的舞台从此消失。数月后,王斌在成都市雕塑公园内一个临时搭建的大蓬里 继续表演川剧。李保亭,从八岁就开始学唱川剧的老把式,如今只能告别川剧舞台,改行表演 歌舞。 NOVEMBER 19, 2008 Idle People in Society 闲着 (又名蝴蝶) Directed by Zhang Weijie, 79 minutes, 2006 This documentary presents the life of four street performing singers from various walks of life: Old Fang, an unemployed worker; Old Zhao, an unemployed migrant peasant worker; Shi Jing, a widow from Shandong Province; and Little Ding, another unemployed man who tries to support his child in college. They work hard, but without acknowledgement from family members and society. Amidst challenges and setbacks, they use singing in the streets to seek dignity, explain history and reality, vent their happiness and sadness, and pray for a better tomorrow. 张伟杰《闲着》 (又名《蝴蝶》) 79 minutes, 2006 老房、石静、小赵、老丁是音乐爱好者,也是生活在社会边缘的街头艺人。他们因生活所困, 陆续走上上海街头,开始了卖艺生涯。他们各有各的经历,各有各的难处,各有各的追求。他 们分分合合,合合分分,相互帮衬,也互有竞争。白天,他们聚集在虹口公园,义务教人唱 歌、拉琴;夜里则出没都市霓虹灯下卖艺,为各自的生计奔忙。他们用歌声寻找自己的的尊 严,表述着历史和现实,宣泄着快乐和忧愁,祈祷着心中的明天。 Tian Li 天里 Directed by Song Tian, 96 minutes, 2007 Mr. Chen Guobin runs the Tianli Drugstore, a local hubbub of Guangming Village where villagers come to exchange news, play mahjong, drink, boast, quarrel, discuss daily events and spread gossip. The most recent talk has been on the triannually held village election… 宋田《天里》 96 minutes, 2007 陈国彬是光明村天里屯“天里综合商店”的老板。“综合商店”不单单是个卖杂货的小店,也 是村民们爱聚堆儿的地方。人们在他的店里搓麻将、打扑克、喝酒、吹牛、吵架、发牢骚、发 呆,谈论国家大事,扯东家长西家短。每天都有不同的人经过,不同的事情发生。最近村子里 的大事就是三年一次的村委会换届选举…… 4 DECEMBER 3, 2008 The Family 家族 (又名双凤辞典) Directed by Jia Ding, 56 minutes, 2006 Shuangfeng (“Double Phoenix”) Village is a walled village of Tujia nationality in western Hunan Province. Full of descendants of the Peng household, this single-surname family village is several hundred years old. Divided into three sub-branches, Dafang (“big house”), Erfang (“second house”) and Sanfang (“third house”), the village is currently run by the latter two. The annual ancestral sacrificial ritual demands a presider and senior members of Erfang and Sanfang begin to compete for the position. At the same time, bi-annual democratic elections in rural China begin. Young people of Erfang and Sanfang are eager to run for the position of village head. Conflicts ensue both on the senior, traditional level and on the younger, democratic level. This documentary took six years to make. 贾丁 《家族》(《双凤辞典》) 56 minutes, 2006 中国是一个由家族组成的国家,其家族组织经历了大约 3000 年的历史,中国社会有着独特的 影响。双凤村是湖南湘西的一个土家族寨子,寨子里的村民几乎全部姓彭,彭氏家族经过几百 年的繁衍,家族里分成大房、二房、三房三个分支,其中大房人少,二房和三房成了村里的主 要势力。按照土家族传统,家族要定期举办祭祖的活动,祭祖是需要一个主持的,二房长者和 三房长者为此开始了竞争。恰逢此时,村里开始了两年一度的村民民主选举,两房的年轻人都 对村长的职位跃跃欲试。就这样,寨子里的老人们为了祭祖发生了矛盾,年轻人们为了当上村 长开始了竞争。 The Road 路 Directed by Jia Ding, 56 minutes, 2006 Hou-yin-dou Village is located in Mizhi County, Shaanxi Province in the middle of the Loess Plateau of central China. A new road is desperately needed to improve the living and economic conditions of the villagers. Ms. Ji Qiaoling, a poverty alleviation official sent from the county government, starts fund-raising. She tries everything: pooling funds from local villagers, applying for support at the unresponsive county bureau of transportation, and finally turning to ask a local “big bill” (da kuan)— an illiterate rich mine-owner originally from the village. The rich guy does not give a clear answer. Ji Qiaoling and her fellow officials decide to host a theatrical performance in the village and invite the mine-owner back to his hometown. The performance starts, the rich guy is back, the banquet is on, and Ji is already slightly drunk, yet the “big bill” still holds back his promise… 贾丁 《路》56 minutes, 2006 故事发生在中国西部的黄土高原上,陕西省的米脂县后引斗村坐落在黄土高原深处,村子交通 闭塞,经济落后。姬巧玲是乡政府下派到后印斗村的扶贫干部,她发现村庄的道路是一条泥土 路,每当下雨,上下学的孩子们的鞋子都会被土路上的泥巴粘掉,村里的果树结了果子也无法 运到外面,于是姬巧玲决定和村干部们一起修路。修路需要 20 万块钱,这对于一个贫穷的村 庄来说是一笔天文数字般的巨款,姬巧玲开始了艰难的筹款工作,她准备向村民摊派,又向县 交通局长申请资金,可交通局长的态度让她流下了失望的眼泪,正在姬巧玲一愁莫展时,村民

    Tianjin Travel Guide Travel in Tianjin Tianjin (tiān jīn 天津), referred to as "Jin (jīn 津)" for short, is one of the four municipalities directly under the Central Government of China. It is 130 kilometers southeast of Beijing (běi jīng 北京), serving as Beijing's gateway to the Bohai Sea (bó hǎi 渤海). After the end of the Second Opium War in 1860, Tianjin became a trading port and nine countries, one after the other, established concessions in the city. Historical changes in past 600 years have made Tianjin an unique city with a mixture of ancient and modem in both Chinese and Western styles. After China implemented its reforms and open policies, Tianjin became one of the first coastal cities to open to the outside world. Since then it has developed rapidly and become a bright pearl by the Bohai Sea.

These issues manifested in Hong Kong films of the time in the form of film characters’ language ideologies. An analysis of six films reveals three themes: (1) the assumption of mutual intelligibility between Cantonese and Putonghua, (2) the importance of English towards one’s Hong Kong identity, and (3) the expectation that Mainland immigrants use Cantonese as their primary language of communication in Hong Kong. The recurrence of these findings indicates their prevalence amongst native Hongkongers, even in a post-handover context. 1 Introduction The handover of Hong Kong to the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1997 marked the end of 155 years of British colonial rule. Within this socio-political landscape came questions of identification and intergroup relations, both amongst native Hongkongers and Mainland Chinese (Tong et al. 1999, Brewer 1999). These manifest in the attitudes and ideologies that native Hongkongers have towards the three most widely used languages in Hong Kong: Cantonese, English, and Putonghua (a standard variety of Mandarin promoted in Mainland China by the Government).

  • A Dictionary of Chinese Characters: Accessed by Phonetics
    A dictionary of Chinese characters ‘The whole thrust of the work is that it is more helpful to learners of Chinese characters to see them in terms of sound, than in visual terms. It is a radical, provocative and constructive idea.’ Dr Valerie Pellatt, University of Newcastle. By arranging frequently used characters under the phonetic element they have in common, rather than only under their radical, the Dictionary encourages the student to link characters according to their phonetic. The system of cross refer- encing then allows the student to find easily all the characters in the Dictionary which have the same phonetic element, thus helping to fix in the memory the link between a character and its sound and meaning. More controversially, the book aims to alleviate the confusion that similar looking characters can cause by printing them alongside each other. All characters are given in both their traditional and simplified forms. Appendix A clarifies the choice of characters listed while Appendix B provides a list of the radicals with detailed comments on usage. The Dictionary has a full pinyin and radical index. This innovative resource will be an excellent study-aid for students with a basic grasp of Chinese, whether they are studying with a teacher or learning on their own.     Social Mobility in China, 1645-2012: A Surname Study Yu (Max) Hao and Gregory Clark, University of California, Davis [email protected], [email protected] 11/6/2012 The dragon begets dragon, the phoenix begets phoenix, and the son of the rat digs holes in the ground (traditional saying). This paper estimates the rate of intergenerational social mobility in Late Imperial, Republican and Communist China by examining the changing social status of originally elite surnames over time. It finds much lower rates of mobility in all eras than previous studies have suggested, though there is some increase in mobility in the Republican and Communist eras. But even in the Communist era social mobility rates are much lower than are conventionally estimated for China, Scandinavia, the UK or USA. These findings are consistent with the hypotheses of Campbell and Lee (2011) of the importance of kin networks in the intergenerational transmission of status. But we argue more likely it reflects mainly a systematic tendency of standard mobility studies to overestimate rates of social mobility. This paper estimates intergenerational social mobility rates in China across three eras: the Late Imperial Era, 1644-1911, the Republican Era, 1912-49 and the Communist Era, 1949-2012. Was the economic stagnation of the late Qing era associated with low intergenerational mobility rates? Did the short lived Republic achieve greater social mobility after the demise of the centuries long Imperial exam system, and the creation of modern Westernized education? The exam system was abolished in 1905, just before the advent of the Republic. Exam titles brought high status, but taking the traditional exams required huge investment in a form of “human capital” that was unsuitable to modern growth (Yuchtman 2010).

    ONOMÀSTICA BIBLIOTECA TÈCNICA DE POLÍTICA LINGÜÍSTICA Male Names of Women and Female Names of Men in the Chinese Society Irena Kałużyńska DOI: 10.2436/15.8040.01.81 Abstract The paper discusses some Chinese given names that apparently indicate the sex of their bearers. In China there have never been any strict linguistic rules concerning the gender-specific differentiation of given names, as the Chinese language does not have a grammatical gender, and the gender usually is a covert category. However, there is a group of given names strictly complying with the most common naming convention, i.e. that a name overtly indicates the sex of the person named. These are Chinese female given names with “female” terms written in characters with the graphical marker of “femininity”, and male names with typical “male” terms, especially general terms for men, terms of address, kinship and rank. In most cases the occurrence of such a term in a name indicates that the bearer of the name is a woman or a man. The cases of the inverse use of the terms reveal the additional significance of such formed names, as commendatory or counter-commendatory names. ***** Introduction The meaningfulness of names plays an important social and cultural role in the Chinese naming system. Given names are formed individually, and they are mostly semantically transparent. The approach to names, as being not only labels helpful in the identification of people but almost real or desired facts, has caused that through personal names the Chinese express their culture-oriented opinions and expectations. Gender stereotypes have had an enormous impact on various aspects of the family and social life, and they have also influenced personal naming.

Ideophones are defined as a set of words that are phonologically and morphologically marked and depict some form of sensory image (Dingemanse 2011b). Middle Chinese has a large body of ideophones, whose domains range from the depiction of sound, movement, visual and other external senses to the depiction of internal senses (cf. Dingemanse 2012a). There is some work on modern variants of Sinitic languages (cf. Mok 2001; Bodomo 2006; de Sousa 2008; de Sousa 2011; Meng 2012; Wu 2014), but so far, there is no encompassing study of ideophones of a stage in the historical development of Sinitic languages. The purpose of this study is to develop a descriptive model for ideophones in Middle Chinese, which is compatible with what we know about them cross-linguistically. The main research question of this study is “what are the phonological, morphological, semantic and syntactic features of ideophones in Middle Chinese?” This question is studied in terms of three parameters, viz. the parameters of form, of meaning and of use.

    2020 ANNUAL REPORT About IHV The Institute of Human Virology (IHV) is the first center in the United States—perhaps the world— to combine the disciplines of basic science, epidemiology and clinical research in a concerted effort to speed the discovery of diagnostics and therapeutics for a wide variety of chronic and deadly viral and immune disorders—most notably HIV, the cause of AIDS. Formed in 1996 as a partnership between the State of Maryland, the City of Baltimore, the University System of Maryland and the University of Maryland Medical System, IHV is an institute of the University of Maryland School of Medicine and is home to some of the most globally-recognized and world- renowned experts in the field of human virology. IHV was co-founded by Robert Gallo, MD, director of the of the IHV, William Blattner, MD, retired since 2016 and formerly associate director of the IHV and director of IHV’s Division of Epidemiology and Prevention and Robert Redfield, MD, resigned in March 2018 to become director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and formerly associate director of the IHV and director of IHV’s Division of Clinical Care and Research. In addition to the two Divisions mentioned, IHV is also comprised of the Infectious Agents and Cancer Division, Vaccine Research Division, Immunotherapy Division, a Center for International Health, Education & Biosecurity, and four Scientific Core Facilities.
