UNIVERZA V NOVI GORICI FAKULTETA ZA PODIPLOMSKI ŠTUDIJ POVIJEST DINARSKOG KRŠA NA PRIMJERU POPOVA POLJA ZGODOVINA POZNAVANJA DINARSKEGA KRASA NA PRIMERU POPOVEGA POLJA DISERTACIJA Ivo Lučić Mentorja: prof. dr. Andrej Kranjc prof. dr. Hereby I declare this thesis is entirely my author work.

The research is undertaken in order to understand the image of the city which has changed radically, which is still undergoing transformations, but also in order to understand the role of urban planning in creation of the urban structure in diverse social circumstances. The accent has been placed on the influence of the social changes in the post-socialist period upon the urban planning of Novi Sad. Social changes affect the urban development and the manner of planning and are the cause of the continuous transformation in the way of thinking and planning. Urban transformation under the influence of the social changes is one of the significant planners issues raised in the recent years in the countries undergoing transition. All those changes in urban planning require special prudence and it can be questioned whether undertaking of the more extensive new construction in that period and in the time of diminishing quality was the most advisable undertaking. All communities of Novi Sad have sought to achieve the equality of cultures within various social and political systems, contributing in such a way to general, economic and cultural development of the city. Striking buildings, squares, temples, city parks, cultural and educational institutions are a vivid testimony to this. Material and non-material cultural heritage, created in the past centuries, stands as the basis of an interactive network of scientific and cultural institutions, which makes Novi Sad today an area where cultures and different identities actively meet. This is the city of museums, galleries, and events such as the EXIT music festival that has gained international rewards and undeniable recognisability.
