The Honorable U Thant Secretary General of the New York, N. Y.

Dear U Thant:

I want to thank you for inviting me to your very delightful luncheon on Wednesday. I appreciate it very much indeed.

The conversation around the table was most interesting. I valued your own analysis of various topics and in particular Vietnam.

You always have my very best wishes and warm support in your very responsible task.

OUR Rer. NO. August 3, 1967 YOUR RCF. ND.

Dear V

I am very anxious to remove any impression which might have been given you yesterday that Mr. Keith Johnson's failure to attend the Secretary-General's luncheon- in honour of our Governor General was due to any want of care on Mr. Johnson's part. In fact, Mr. Johnson did not know he was invited to attend the luncheon.

As you know, I have been absent from New York since July 11 when we talked about the Governor General's informal visit and you told me of the Secretary-General's wish to have the Governor General lunch with him. The consultations with the Chief of Protocol about possible guests and about the composition of the Governor General's party were carried on for the Mission by Mr. Aitken, the Charge" d1 Affaires.

Very unfortunately on the morning of August 1 when Mr. de Meulemeester's letter of July 31 was received in the Mission and when I returned to office Mr. Aitken was out on other business. More unfortunately still, I assumed that the invitations had already issued from the Secretary-General's office to all the guests concerned and so I took no action on that letter except to deliver a copy to the Governor General's daughter.

Only after the luncheon did it come to my knowledge that Mr. Johnson had not received an invitation.

Would you kindly assure the Secretary-General, in case he should hear of this unfortunate incident, that the omission was ours but that no discourtesy whatever was intended on the part of any member of the Jamaican party?

Yours very sincerely,

(E. R. Richardson)
