NOTICE. Having completed the Udyoga Parva I enter the Bhishma. The preparations being completed, the battle must begin. But how dan- gerous is the prospect ahead ? How many of those that were counted on the eve of the terrible conflict lived to see the overthrow of the great Knru captain ? To a KsJtatriya warrior, however, the fiercest in- cidents of battle, instead of being appalling, served only as tests of bravery that opened Heaven's gates to him. It was this belief that supported the most insignificant of combatants fighting on foot when they rushed against Bhishma, presenting their breasts to the celestial weapons shot by him, like insects rushing on a blazing fire. I am not a Kshatriya. The prespect of battle, therefore, cannot be unappalling or welcome to me. On the other hand, I frankly own that it is appall- ing. If I receive support, that support may encourage me. I am no Garuda that I would spurn the strength of number* when battling against difficulties. I am no Arjuna conscious of superhuman energy and aided by Kecava himself so that I may eHcounter any odds. -

Venkataram Ayurvedic Research Unit, A.I.I.M.H., Bangalore Attempts to study mind in its scientific perspective have been existing for ages. Yajurveda, one of the oldest literary records has tried to give the picture of mind as * Divine Light' and the ' Via Media' of perception, memory, etc.i Unmada has been, recorded in Atharva Veda with its stages and treatment for the first time.* The word has been used as UNMADA. Gradually towards Samhita period (800 B.C. to 600 B.C.) UNMADA seems to have become UNMAADA. In Taittariya Samhita it is said that Pishacha (Manohana) a kind of krimi, impairs mind and Gandharvas and Apsaxas cause unmaada in man ', *„ *a. In premier Ayurvedic classics like Charaka Samhita. Susfrrata Samhita and Astangahridaya, Unmada has been defined with different view points, 5 to 9. Out of these, Charaka's definition appears to be more appealing on account of being easily understandable. He Mates that Unmaada has to be understood as the unsettled condition of the Manas (mind), Buddhi (understanding), Samjna (consciousness), Gnana (perception), Smriti (memory), Bhakti (inclination), Sheela (character), Chesta (behaviour), and Achara (conduct). Considering various aspects of the aesease, Unmada has been classified by ancient Ayurvedic savants. Charaka records Unmaada as of five kinds at one place and two viz.j Nija and Agantu at the other in the chapter he has devoted for " Unmada Nidana " (pathology of unmada).io Shushruta and Vagbhata, the former being known as a contemporary of Agnivesha, the author of Charaka Samhita (500 to 300 B.C.) and the latter who flourished during 7 A.D., recognize unmada as of six types.u Thus we come across varities of opinion about the classification. -

Dhruva Maharaj's Meeting with Nanda and Sunanda
Dhruva Maharaj’s meeting with Nanda and Sunanda Srimad Bhagavatam verse 4.12.22, (Class at Mayapur) Maharaj recites the verse: Tam Krishna-padabhinivishta chetasam Baddhanjalim prashraya namra kandharam Sunanda-nadau upasrutya sasmitam Pratyuchatuh pushkaranabha sammatau Translation: Dhruva Maharaj was always absorbed in thinking of the lotus feet of Lord Krishna. His heart was full with Krishna. When the two confidential servants of the Supreme Lord, who were named Nanda and Sunanda, approached him, smiling happily, Dhruva stood with folded hands, bowing humbly. They then addressed him as follows: Purport: Maharaj reads the purport by Srila Prabhupada: “In this verse, the wordpushkaranabha-sammatau is significant. Krishna, or Lord Vishnu, is known for His lotus eyes, lotus navel, lotus feet and lotus palms. Here, He is called pushkara-nabha, which means “the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who has a lotus navel,” andsammatau means “two confidential or very obedient servants.” The materialistic way of life differs from the spiritual way of life in that one is disobedience and the other is obedience to the will of the Supreme Lord. All living entities are part and parcel of the Supreme Lord, and they are supposed to be always agreeable to the order of the Supreme person; that is perfect oneness. In Vaikuntha world, all the living entities are in oneness with the Supreme Godhead because they never defy His orders. Here in the material world, however, they are not sammata, agreeable, but always asammata, disagreeable. This human form of life is a chance to be trained to be agreeable to the orders of the Supreme Lord. -

Proceedings of Bridges 2013: Mathematics, Music, Art, Architecture, Culture Mathematical Ideas in Ancient Indian Poetry Sarah Glaz Department of Mathematics University of Connecticut Storrs, CT 06269, USA E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Modern mathematics owes a big debt to India’s contributions to the subject. Of particular importance is the decimal, place value number system that appeared in India during the Vedic period or soon after, circa 1300 BC to 300 AD, and made its way to Europe during the Middle Ages. That period of time in India also produced a heady mixture of poetic works: poems, songs, grand epics, biographies and books of instruction in verse covering millions of pages. Mathematical ideas are interwoven into the metaphysical, religious and aesthetic fabric of many of these works. This article brings a selection of poems from that time period that provides a taste of ancient India’s mathematical preoccupations in their cultural and esthetic context. They also highlight India’s mathematical accomplishments of the period, and uncover instances where seeds of future mathematical concepts made their first appearance. The concluding remarks touch lightly on current Indian-inspired uses of mathematical poetry as a pedagogical tool. The Vedas and Supplementary Texts: Calendrical Calculations and Geometry The most ancient Indian literary works are the four Vedas. Controversially dated around 1300 BC, the oldest of the four, the Rig Veda, is a collection of 1028 hymns written in classical Sanskrit. Mathematical ideas involving astronomy and time reckoning appear in a number of the hymns, particularly those describing the creation of the world. -

Background: Ayurvedic Psychology has greatly been underestimated in the West, as also distorted by the New-Age Ayurveda which has superimposed its own biases and misinterpretations upon the system, rather than examine the traditional aspects as seen in the great science itself. Movements such as the Arya Samaj and its founder, Maharishi Dayananda Saraswati often have stressed the need to go back to the original texts and sources of tradition to ascertain the truth in various Hindu sciences, which have been distorted over time. The approach here also follows this line. As an example, in India, various systems have been developed by lesser-classes, often Buddhist monks in southern India who did not have access to the sacred texts of the Brahmins and were not allowed to study the classical texts in detail and hence developed their own pseudo-systems, which later influenced the mainstream of Hindu society and sciences. An example of this are the Marmas or vital energies in Ayurveda. Marmas are vital spots that require varma (armour) or protection. Sushruta Samhita (Sharirasthana, VI, 41-43) states marmas should not be damaged in any way, which also means no use of acupressure nor acupuncture on them traditionally, as these cause damage and aggravate the doshas, which includes cutting, hitting, fire even near the Marma causes issues (Su. -

He is working as a senior journalist and covered socio- economic stories in Rajasthan and Gujarat- great states of culture and customs of India. 2 The story of an illiterate woman of Rajasthan in India who in her journey of finding transcendental love realizes that marriage is not only the answer. After her broken marriage she tries several live in-relationships to find true love. She knows that the feeling of transcendental love, a love beyond logic and reasoning, exists and she starts searching the meaning of love, during her journey, she tries to understand principles of Hindu religion and philosophy to understand the reality and truth that fabricates the society to live in accordance with right knowledge. The lower communities that remained suppressed for thousands of years have their own customs and rituals and have their own closed society but unfortunately their literatures and customs got no place in writing because education was mostly limited to upper class. The story also tells that Indian philosophy was never applied to get the real advantage of such knowledge. And therefore philosophies remained just reciting of books and prevailing system of society and confused common man. The Place of Indra in Early Buddhism Prefatory Note: HE scope of the following dissertation is a detailed study of the mytho- logical concept of Sakka as found in Early Buddhism. The historical T evolution of this concept from that of Indra of the Rg Veda and its development during the period of the compilation of the early Pali Canon are the two main points kept in view. The chief sources for the facts investigated and discussed have been the following: - Digha Nikaya Majjhima Nikaya AIiguttara Nikaya Samyutta Nikaya Dhammapada Suttanipata Theragatha Therigatha Udana j ataka Vinaya Pitaka (Mahavagga). The Commentaries have been drawn upon only when it was thought necessary to do so either for the purpose of elucidation or for comparison with the later trends of development. Among the authorities consulted on the origin and development of the concept of Indra in Vedic Mythology special mention must be made of the authoritative treatises of Macdonell, Keith and Mackenzie. On the development of the Buddhist concept of Sakka the important contribu- tions of Professor and Mrs. Rhys Davids have been given special consideration although the main thesis put forward herein runs counter to their conclusions. Yoga meditation is the process of cultivating and stabilizing the awareness of one's real nature, through definite spiritual and psychophysical methods and laws by which the narrow ego, the flawed hereditary human consciousness, is displaced by the consciousness of the soul. Each person has to fight his own battle of Kurukshetra. It is a war not only worth winning, but in the divine order of the universe and of the eternal relationship between the soul and God, a war that sooner or later must be won. In the holy Bhagavad Gita, the quickest attainment of that victory is assured to the devotee who, through undiscourageable practice of the divine science of yoga meditation, learns like Arjuna to hearken to the inner wisdom-song of Spirit.
