Cover design by Anna Gatti. 5. ‘Transmissions from an Extrasensory World’1: Ethnos and Mysticism in the Photographic Nexus Christopher Webster How far, since then, the ocean streams Have swept us from that land of dreams, That land of fiction and of truth, The lost Atlantis of our youth!2 Introduction In contrast to the increasingly lurid scholarly research on the broader subject of the ‘Nazi Occult’ that has appeared since the end of the Second World War, the relationship to mythic occult currents and esoteric themes in the photography of Ethnos3 in National Socialist Germany has not been examined in any great depth. However, recent scholarship has confirmed that there were indeed powerful esoteric (as well as exoteric) occult currents that undoubtedly influenced the cultural mythos of National Socialist Germany. Eric Kurlander’s definitive work Hitler’s Monsters: A Supernatural History of the Third Reich (2017) explores this influence in Austria and Germany, arising as it did from a late- nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century paranormal milieu, as well as how this influence continued to play a part in what Kurlander terms the ‘Supernatural Imaginary’ throughout the era of the Third Reich itself. As Kurlander explained: From cosmopolitan Berlin to Catholic Munich, from Saxony to Schleswig- Holstein thousands of Germans flooded to seances, astrologers, tarot readers, parapsychological experiments, occult bookstores and even esoteric schools and university courses… the sheer size and diversity of the occult marketplace in Germany and Austria suggests that it tapped into a mass consumer culture that was unique in depth and breadth when compared to other countries. Berlin and Munich alone were home to thousands of spiritualists, mediums and astrologers who appealed to tens and perhaps hundreds of thousands of consumers.4 Kurlander’s intelligent work builds upon a slim but significant corpus of scholarly works that have dealt with this topic and its influence (or otherwise) on the origins and direction of National Socialism itself.5 Kurlander, who has written the preface to this volume, described how this influence in National Socialist Germany, this ‘Supernatural Imaginary’, was ‘…a space in which a range of popular esoteric, pseudo- scientific, folklorist, and mythological tropes might be exploited in the 4 Eric Kurlander, Hitler’s Monsters, A Supernatural History of the Third Reich (New Haven: Yale University Press, 2017), p. 14. 5 See Joscelyn Godwin’s Arktos: The Polar Myth in Science, Symbolism and Nazi Survival (London: Thames and Hudson,1993), Corinna Treitel, A Science for the Soul: Occultism and the Genesis of the German Modern (Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2004), Thomas Hakl’s Unknown Sources: National Socialism and the Occult (Sequim: Holmes Publishing Group, 2005) and the classic work of Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke, The Occult Roots of Nazism: The Ariosophists of Austria and Germany, 1890–1935 (New York: New York University Press, 1992). In addition, there have been, over the last two decades, a growth of scholarly studies focussed on esoterica in toto in academia, as well as academically grounded research societies such as the European Society for Studies in Western Esotericism, the American Association for the Study of Esotericism, and the Cambridge Centre for the Study of Esotericism, amongst others. Added to these are the growing number of postgraduate study courses and academic chairs related to Western and Eastern esotericism (for example at the University of Amsterdam, the École pratique des hautes études, Rice University Houston, the University of Groningen and, until 2014, the Essex Centre for the Study of Western Esotericism, led by the late Goodrick-Clarke). 5. Ethnos and Mysticism in the Photographic Nexus 175 building of ideological consensus across a diverse Nazi Party and all the more eclectic German population’.6 This chapter explores how the influence of nineteenth-centuryvölkisch and occult currents on National Socialism percolated the mass-reproduced photographic images of Ethnos, with its framing of the German as ‘other’, and how the National Socialist syncretisation of myth, the occult, science, and art found a nexus in these photographic images. Additionally, as will be seen, the work of influential (if controversial) scholars such as Herman Wirth, and the powerful influence of political institutions such as Heinrich Himmler’s Ahnenerbe, also played a direct role in forming this visual manifestation of a race apart, with a divine origin in a mythical Urheimat in the ‘ultimate north’. The allusion to an occult myth of divine forebears in these photographically staged portrayals of the ‘Aryan’ added to and extended the celebration of a racial type in line with ‘race science’. Photographers of Ethnos, such as Erich Retzlaff or Hans Saebens, often incorporated typological approaches that included a metaphysical and esoteric basis. They used the machine-generated optical and chemical processes of photography to make work that was breaking the bounds of its empirical realm, in a kind of nationalist ‘staged’ photography, just as cinema did in the interwar period. Occult Currents In his 1961 essay ‘The Mystical Origins of National Socialism’, George L. Mosse explored a ‘revolt against positivism’ that had formed part of the cultural and semi-religious prelude to the advent of the Third Reich.

In the case of Germany, a forever politically fragmented space, justifying unity was all the more important, especially beginning with the 19 th century when it had a real chance to establish itself as a state. Then, beyond nationalism and romanticism, at the dawn of the Third Reich, the myth of a unified, powerful, pure people with a tradition dating since time immemorial became almost a rule in an ideology that attempted to go back to the past and select those elements which could have ensured a historical basis for the regime. In this study, we will attempt to focus on two important aspects of this type of instrumentalisation. The focus of the discussion is mainly Tacitus’ Germania, a work which has been forever invoked in all sorts of contexts as a means to discover the ancient Germans and create a link to the modern ones, but in the same time the main beliefs in the realm of history and archaeology are underlined, so as to catch a better glimpse of how the regime has been instrumentalising and overinterpreting highly controversial facts.     „In dem schwankenden Meere prähistorischer Hypothesen“1 Die Germanenfrage am Berliner Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte (1799–1945) Marion Bertram Die Geschichte des Berliner Museums für Vor- und Frühgeschichte zeigt anschaulich, wie sich das Verständnis von Altertümern und Vergangenheit hin zu einem interdisziplinä- ren Forschungsfeld entwickelte und welche organisatorischen und konzeptionellen Ent- scheidungsprozesse von einer reinen Sammlung zu einem nach konkreten Prinzipien Dsammelnden, ordnenden und ausstellenden Museum führten.2 Die Sammlungsstücke, welche den Germanen zugewiesen wurden, standen dabei selten im Mittelpunkt des In- teresses der Museumsmacher, ebenso wenig die Germanen selbst. BERLIN STUDIES OF THE ANCIENT WORLD has become increasingly diverse in recent years due to developments in the historiography of the sciences and the human- ities. A move away from hagiography and presentations of scientifi c processes as an inevitable progression has been requested in this context. Historians of archae- olo gy have begun to utilize approved and new histo- rio graphical concepts to trace how archaeological knowledge has been acquired as well as to refl ect on the historical conditions and contexts in which knowledge has been generated. Die prähistorische Archäologie in ihrem politischen und wissenschaftlichen Kontext. 24.-26.9.2009, Dresden Susanne Grunwald, M.A. Berliner Konzeptionen und Sächsische Realitäten. Zur Bedeutung der Burgwallfor- schung für die Archäologie in der SBZ/DDR zwischen 1945 und 1965 Aus Sicht der Burgwallarchäologie in Sachsen sind für die Zeit nach 1945 mehr Kontinuitäten als Brüche zu beobachten. Bis zum Mauerbau 1961 und der Durchsetzung parteipolitischer Richtlinien und des historischen Materialismus als Geschichtsphilosophie sowie einem grundlegenden Generati- onswechsel in der Berliner Akademie in den 1960er Jahren stand die sächsische Burgwallforschung deutlich in der Tradition der Vorkriegsforschungen. Zum einen wegen der zahlreichen personellen Kontinuitäten innerhalb des Burgwalldiskurses; zum anderen, weil man sich deutlich an der polni- schen Forschung zum Frühmittelalter orientierte, die methodisch ebenfalls in die 1920er und 1930er Jahre zurückreichte, als die deutsche Ostforschung ebenso wie die polnische Westforschung aggressiv ethnische Deutungen versuchten und archäologische und historische Argumente zu instabilen Misch- argumentationen aufbauten. Gleichzeitig hatte sich der ideologische und der politische Rahmen aller Forschungen radikal geändert, der einstige Gegner im Osten war Bündnispartner, frühgeschichtliche Kulturen wurden umbewertet und eine einheitliche Geschichtsphilosophie begann sich durchzusetzen, die neue Fragen und Perspektiven in die Forschung einführte. Durch die Kooperationen mit Polen und der CSSR entwickelten sich währen der 1950er Jahre mehrere internationale wissenschaftliche Präsentationsstrukturen, die langfristig Einfluss nahmen auf die For- schungen in der DDR. Mit der Aufnahme offizieller Kooperationsverhandlungen mit der Polnischen Akademie 1956 nach dem deutsch-polnischen Kulturabkommen von 1952 begann eine Reihe konkre- ter Projekte, gemeinsamer Ausgrabungen, ein Studentenaustausch, vor allem aber eine Vielzahl ge- meinsam konzipierter und durchgeführter Kongresse und Tagungen.

    Archaeologia Polona, vol. 50 : 2012(2019), 85–109 PL ISSN 0066 - 5924 Scientific Capital after 1945 in German Archaeology – Wilhelm Unverzagt and the Archaeology of Hillforts Susanne Grunwalda Strong continuity is visible in German archaeology between the 1930s and 1940s and the years after 1945. How can this be explained in the face of the total exchange of political structures ideologies and protagonists? In my opinion, there are two reasons for this phenomenon. Firstly: the stability of the network of the German archaeology especially and of related German disci- plines in general. These networks were strong enough to outlive the dictatorship and the war and most of the protagonists were flexible enough to gain from them. The second reason is that some fields of research were more attractive than others and absorbed money, attention and support. Scientists in these fields became influential in the archaeological network and were supported by their colleagues. They became able to transfer their topics into the frameworks afforded by the new political and scientific systems as a kind of scientific capital. Hillfort research was one of these successful fields and Wilhelm Unverzagt (1892–1971) was one of the most influential pro- tagonists of it. This paper will illustrate a strong continuity in East German archaeology before and after 1945 on the basis of his work at the German Academy of Sciences in East Berlin. Herman Wirth Die Monatswende Juni—Juli des Jahres 193 j brachte ein für die Kulturpolitik des Dritten Reiches bedeutungsvolles Ereignis. Am Samstag, dem 29. Juni, lud Reichs- kanzler Adolf Hitler in der Hauptstadt der nationalsozialistischen Bewegung Mün- chen zum Richtfest des „Hauses der Deutschen Kunst" in der Prinzregentenstraße. Die erste Ausstellung, so hatte der Führer schon bestimmt, sollte unter dem Motto „Tausend Jahre Deutsche Kunst" stehen, als ein „Denkmal für unsere Ahnen, eine Lehrstätte für unsere lebenden Künstler"1. Unter den zahlreichen Ehrengästen der nationalsozialistischen Prominenz befanden sich der Münchener Gauleiter Adolf Wagner, der bayerische Ministerpräsident Ludwig Siebert, die Reichsleiter Otto Dietrich und Martin Bormann und verschie- dene SS-Gruppenführer — ihnen allen wurde von einer Ehrenkompanie der SS-Ver- fügungstruppe München Reverenz erwiesen2. Deren oberster Kommandeur aber, Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler, hatte sich entschuldigen lassen. Denn am dar- auffolgenden Sonntag hatte er, dessen Schutzstaffel gerade erst im Aufbau begriffen war, in Braunschweig die zweite und bisher größte SS-Führerschule zu eröffnen3. Im übrigen plante er für Montag, den 1. Juli, die Gründung einer Kultureinrich- tung ganz eigener Art, und zwar am Orte seines Amtssitzes, in Berlin. Gleich am Montag, dem 1. Juli, traf er sich in den Diensträumen der Schutzstaffel mit sechs Gleichgesinnten, um, nach unterschriftlicher Anerkennung einer Satzung, die sog. „Studiengesellschaft für Geistesurgeschichte ,Deutsches Ahnenerbe'" ins Leben zu rufen4. Einer der Mitunterzeichner und eigentliche Vater dieser Gesellschaft „Ahnenerbe" war der deutsch-holländische Privatgelehrte Herman Wirth, geboren 1885 als Sohn eines Gymnasiallehrers in Utrecht5. Nach dem Studium der niederländischen Philo- logie, Germanistik, Geschichte und Musikwissenschaft in Utrecht und Leipzig hatte er bereits 1910 über den „Untergang des niederländischen Volksliedes" bei dem Volkskundler John Meier promoviert.

January 2009 2 ABSTRACT The thesis investigates the relationship between archaeology, politics and ideology through a case-study of the prominent German archaeologist Herbert Jankuhn (1905- 1990). It addresses the following questions: what role do archaeological scholars assume in a totalitarian state’s organisational structures, and what may motivate them to do so? To what extent and how are archaeologists and their scientific work influenced by the political and ideological context in which they perform, and do they play a role in generating and/or perpetuating ideologies? The thesis investigates the nature and extent of Jankuhn's practical involvement in National Socialist hierarchical structures, and offers a thematically structured analysis of Jankuhn's archaeological writings that juxtaposes the work produced during and after the National Socialist period. It investigates selected components of Herbert Jankuhn's research interests and methodological approaches, examines his representations of Germanic/German pre- and protohistory and explores his adapting interpretations of the early medieval site of Haithabu in northern Germany. The dissertation demonstrates that a scholar’s adaptation to political and ideological circumstances is not necessarily straightforward or absolute. As a member of the Schutzstaffel, Jankuhn actively advanced National Socialist ideological preconceptions and military aims.
