1 2 3 Chinatown London’s characterful history stretches back before the Chinese community of restaurants and businesses arrived in the 1950s

Formerly farmland, owner Lord Gerrard gave permission for houses to be built during the panic to rebuild after the Great Fire of London. Gerrard Street was completed in 1685, then later established a market hall and slaughterhouse. Within a century it was one of London’s hotspots – a haunt for artists, authors and politicos. In the late 1800s new waves of immigrants followed; Italians, Jewish, then Maltese. Irish proprietor Kate Meyrick ran the notorious roaring twenties 43 Club at 43 Gerrard Street and legendary jazz maverick Ronnie Scott set up his first jazz club in the basement of number 39. London’s original Chinatown was actually in the East End where Chinese employees first arrived in the 18th century, settling in Limehouse. Post-war however, Chinatown relocated to its current Soho site thanks to a reputation for great nightlife and reasonable rents. By the late 1960s, Chinatown was truly established as the epicentre of London’s Chinese community. In the 1980s Chinese gates, street furniture and a pavilion were added, plus Gerrard Street, parts of Newport Place and Macclesfield Street became pedestrianised. The impressive Chinese gate in Wardour Street was completed in 2016, made by Chinese artisans and then assembled in London. The two white jade plaques on top of each side read “Peace to China. SICHUANESE Like the fiery peppercorn, Sichuan food is mouth-numbingly hot. CANTONESE Hailing from the province of Guangdong, Cantonese food is what Western palettes are most familiar with. Think: egg fried rice and bouncy dim sum parcels. Naturally, Cantonese has far more to offer than the classics and there’s plenty to be discovered in Chinatown London. Elegant and sophisticated, Plum Valley elevates Cantonese cuisine with artful-presentation and progressive ingredients. Owned by one of Chinatown London’s oldest families, Orient London is all about staying true to tradition, while Four Seasons is famed for serving some of the best duck in the world.

HOT POT This ancient Mongolian dish has been warming bellies for thousands of years. It’s a communal cauldron of tasty broth loaded with delicious meaty and veggie morsels, all of which are cooked at the table. For a simple, humble take on hot pot, Little Lamb stick to tradition. JAPANESE No doubt sushi is Japan’s most iconic culinary export, but their cuisine has plenty more for taste-buds to explore like steaming bowls of rich ramen and crispy tempura. Vibrant yet delicate flavours make Japanese cuisine distinctly theirs. With a menu inspired by the finest produce of Japan’s idyllic Hokkaido island, American diner culture and feel-good Japanese staples, Ichibuns is the place for laid-back drinking and dining, lunch, evenings and late at night. Serving everything from sushi, sake and baked treats, Shibuya Soho does Japanese café cuisine to perfection. Misato’s katsu curry has fans queuing out the door, and with a 20-year heritage, Tokyo Diner is Chinatown London’s original Japanese restaurant.

MALAYSIAN / INDONESIAN Aromatic herbs and spices, sweet coconut milk and fragrant rice are the cornerstone of Malaysian and Indonesian cuisine. With complex flavours, the region’s signature dish, nasi lemak is a must-eat and it can be found in Chinatown London. Rupert Court’s C&R café’s creamy Malaysian laska curry is top of Observer food critic, Jay Rayner’s, laksa curry list. Rasa Sayang’s tangy nasi lemak is served with tenderly curried chicken.

VIETNAMESE Fresh, clean, light and bright flavours are the foundation of all Vietnamese dishes. With a reliance on herbs and vegetables like lemongrass, ginger and coriander, the cuisine is super healthy and harmonises the 5 elements; sour, bitter, sweet, spicy and salty. Serving up ten types of fragrant pho soup, bright and buzzy Le Hanoi attracts a youthful crowd. Pho & Bun puts a modern spin on Vietnamese street food and Viet Food’s menu was conceived by Michelin starred chef, Jeff Tan.

BURMESE New to Chinatown London’s thriving portfolio of Asian cuisines is Burmese. Myanmar (formerly Burma) borders China, India and Thailand. As such, its cuisine is informed by its neighbours, resulting in a glorious mish-mash of Asian flavours and ingredients. The ShanState presents authentic Burmese dishes like laphet – a salad made from fermented tea leaves, tomato, chili, ginger and prawns – and mohinga or ‘monk noodles’ – a rice noodle and fish soup, lemongrass and coriander.

Taiyaki

Taiyaki literally translates to fried seabream – tai (seabream) are seen as the most royal of fish in Japanese culture, and as such, seabream-shaped sweets and decorations tend to be the hallmarks of momentous celebrations in Japan, such as weddings. Taiyaki came about as a type of street food in Tokyo in 1909; a fish shape made of crispy pancake batter filled with azuki paste (sweetened red beans). Then came the variations: custard taiyaki, chocolate taiyaki, sweet potato taiyaki, sausage taiyaki, cheese taiyaki, frozen white taiyaki, croissant taiyaki… The list goes on and on. And now, a new star emerges: taiyaki topped with soft serve ice cream.

Visitors can discover aquariums full of live seafood at SeeWoo and exotic fruits like the pungent durian, and sauces and spices galore at New Loon Moon. Authentic Chinese trinkets can be found at Wan Jun gift shop, while Shaftesbury Avenue’s Beijing Tong Ren Tang is one of Europe’s oldest Chinese medicine dispensaries dating back to the 1600’s. Guanghwa bookshop is a destination for travelling book lovers, stocking everything from novels, prose, herbal medicine and martial arts, to history and philosophy.
