International Wals mee-

ting in Arosa, Jann Butzerin, PROJECT Manager

16–18 September 2016 What exactly is a Wals meeting? Every 3 years since the 1960s, all Wals people from the settlements in the Alps meet alternating in a Wals village for the international Wals meeting. Members of the organisations that belong to the International Wals Association (IVfW), meaning all regional Wals associations in the Alpine region, attend this meeting. In addition numerous societies for traditional costumes and music, especially from Valais and Italy, will also take part.

Why does this meeting in 2016 take place in Arosa? Arosa, Langwies and are Wals villages of the Schanfigg valley. The political community Arosa also includes some Wals groups that belong to the Wals association of and/or the IVfW. As an experienced event destination and with its diversity, Arosa is the ideal location for an international Wals meeting.

What can guests expect of the Wals meeting? Guests can expect a diverse programme from Friday to Sunday. Events will take place from Arosa all the way to -Praden. There will be a farmer’s market, a cattle show, an exhibition about schooling as well as organized transport service to the Wals settlements Fondei, Sapün and Medergen. The big highlights are the Wals evening in Arosa and the parade in the Arosa village.

How do you organise such a big event? Arosa together with the Wals association of Grisons applied to be the host. Following the acceptance the organising commit- tee was formed. The OC presidium as well as diverse adminis- trative tasks are handled by Arosa Tourism. In addition, representatives with a relation to the Wals culture, board members of the Wals association of Grisons and the IVfW as well as representatives of the gastronomic and cultural sector are part of the committee.

Why is it worth visiting the Wals meeting? A visit of the Wals meeting gives a glance into a culture with a long-standing history and tradition. And the fact that it only takes place every 3 years, creates a high significance. The fun and enthusiasm tends to transfer to all visitors. You simply cannot miss the uniqueness of this event in a traditional location like Arosa!

«Where we Wals poeple live»

Of course it would be a little bit exaggerated to claim that the Wals people were the first human beings to have lived in the Schanfigg valley – but the Wals people did indeed immigrate via to Langwies in the 13th century, and gradually populated the whole Schanfigg valley. Some villa- ges in Schanfigg originate from the Romans, but were then also taken over by the Wals people. Langwies, Arosa and Praden are original Wals villages. All villages have kept their character and are regarded as pretty mountain villages. High above their roofs are the “Maiensäss” where peo- ple lived and worked during the summer months until the 20th century. In the old days, harvested timber was transported along the river to Chur. Nowadays everything is a little bit easier… These Wals people have indeed an interesting history! Discover the times of peace and relaxation in the beautiful Schanfigg region. Be enchanted by the forest, the meadows, the wild rivers and the wonderful flora. Take a close look and you might still see how our ancestors used to live. The villages of the Schanfigg valley invite to linger and enjoy the moment.

Schanfigg Tip: Discover Strassberg in the Fondei Valley

Far above Langwies you will find the valley of Fondei and Strassberg. The hamlet has had people living year round up at the mountain for centuries and it presents an excellent example of how Wals people used to live, work and spend their evenings. We offer the opportunity to experience it yourself. Our Culture Tour will take you back to how Wals people lived in the early 20th century. The local craftsmen will demonstrate how they used to make cheese on the open fire during the Cheese Making Presentation. At the Liecht-Hengert you can listen to stories and legends of the old Wals people – while we serve tea and the local pear bread, just like it used to be The Wals colony of Strassberg 33 I AROSA SUMMER SEASON 2016
