The channel 7 promo and emotive comments purported by GH are reminiscent of Jamie Briggs misleading the Australian people via national radio and do nothing to progress a future or a relationship between the community of Norfolk Island and Australia. Executive Director’s talk with the Jenolan Caves for the New Year that year. So, this is actually your first time that you have ever Louci Reynolds over VL2NI landed foot on Norfolk? The following is a transcript of the interview that It certainly is. I’m a ‘newbie’ Louci Reynolds, Acting Manager of radio station Louci - That’s a fairly big call to accept a position VL2NI, had with Mr. Peter Gesling on Monday, 20th to a place that you actually have never been to? July 2015. Mr. Gesling has been appointed as the Yes. It’s not unfamiliar in the context. I was born on Executive Director and who, as an accomplished senior an island. I was born in Papua New Guinea so island executive in local government, is well positioned life is one of those things that is intrinsic. I’ve worked to help steer the transition of the Administration of in several remote communities and it was a challenge Norfolk Island to a Norfolk Island Regional Council (continued overleaf) from 1st July 2016. After a series of welcoming comments, Louci asked:- Peter, you just arrived on Norfolk Island a couple of weeks ago? Yes. We arrived at the start of July and we’ve been fascinated to see and have a look around and start to get my bearings. I don’t know that I can say that I’ve formed any firm views yet, but it is great to be here. It is an amazing place. Louci - You feel comfortable. You feel at home? I do. I’m still living in tourist accommodation and that’s lovely, but we move in to a house at the end of this week. That will be great. Louci - You have brought your partner with you? Yes. Susan has come with me. She is not on the island at the moment as she has gone back to the ‘big’ island to clean up the things that I couldn’t get done before I went away. Louci - I hope you both enjoy it and Norfolk is pretty special so I’m sure you will. We are looking forward to it. It is quite an extraordinary place and the history and heritage here is something that has fascinated me for a long time, so to get the opportunity to come for work was, as you know, a bonus in itself. We tried to come here a few years back but there was a cyclone at the time so we didn’t get here. It doesn’t happen often I am told but it did happen that time. Louci - And the plane turned back? We didn’t even get on the plane. It didn’t even leave Sydney. We were on call for a few days and we went up to Executive Director’s talk with Louci Reynolds Every community has its issues, and working at over VL2NI - continued the community level, whether you work not for profit of being able to work with another community and or whether you work for a government or work for it was suggested that I take this job. businesses providing services, they all have their Louci - How long were you on Papua New Guinea challenges and Norfolk is no different that way. before your family moved? Norfolk Island Agent: Celtic Shipping Services Ph: 24338 / Mob 53484 [email protected] THEIR FUTURE-THEIR VOICE With respect for, and apologies to, Banjo Patterson and THEIR FUTURE - THEIR VOICE With respect for, and apologies to, Banjo Patterson and The Man from Snowy River There was movement on the island, for the word had passed around, That the NIPD group was underway, And was now like NAGS and others – peddling hard to make some ground, So all the hacks had gathered for the fray. Some failed, some feisty followers from homesteads near and far, Had gathered at headquarters overnight, For these ‘bushed’ folk love fringe politics, where the mad ideas are, They sat and sniffed the battle with delight.

There was Sanderson, who forged his ties while elsewhere growing up, And Buffett, with his hair as white as snow; (Though few could stand beside him when his blood was fairly up, He would go wherever he could be on show.) The Nobbs’, the Geoffs and others came along to lend a hand, No better leaders ever held the reins. ( For never were there others who might have saved this land, They learned to lead whilst sitting on jet planes. (

The subject they debated was OUR future and OUR choice, With an invite to consider some ways that WE could go, But THEY had already chosen what should become OUR voice, So was it really all put on for show? THEY spoke of Free Association but THEY would write the rules, With some slick and easy rhetoric in mind, Perhaps they thought that we were just a bunch of simple fools, It’s fantasy, the cheap and mindless kind.

It brings to mind another place at present in the poo, The Greeks, who wave their flags and vote to choose, They give not much but want the lot, their cake and eat it too, While Europe, it still has a lot to lose. NIPD won’t pay the price so some can have it all, Self-righteous braying forms their chosen stance, But those of us, who like ‘the map,’ will make a simpler call, Like Varoufakis, ‘on your bike,’ give reform a chance. From time to time I find myself leaning toward “realistic” pessimism (perhaps the other sleep deprived parents in the “under 1’s” category can relate?). Stock markets will go bad, my health will get worse, and I will die in a way that’s not my first preference. These and many other predictions seem reasonably realistic, and if I can maintain a certain level of “Eyore-ness”, they might even ward off some future disappointment (although it does seem odd to try to minimise disappointment by living with a low-grade version of it now). There is, of course, a better way. God’s words to us are brimming with hope. His story consists of promises made and kept, once-and-for-all forgiveness granted, oneness with His people, and death conquered. In other words, my realistic pessimism is better known as unbelief. Though some things will go bad, they are small matters compared to what goes well. As such, it is time to take seriously the irreversible movement of Scripture toward hope and then onto joy. To get there, I have to start with repentance. After all, my version of reality tends to veer off into self-protection and self-trust. I prefer my interpretation of life to the Lord’s. So I need his forgiveness, mercy and his grace. From there I can give my attention to his joy, which is actually within my reach - precisely because I can find joy in other people’s experiences! For example, I can actually be a bit indifferent about the good things happening in my own life, but I often find myself excited about good things for other people. When my family or friends are excited about something good - an engagement, a baby, a long-awaited job - I get excited with them. With this in mind, if God has joy, then I can enter into it too. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. (John 15:11) But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. (John 17:13) Our aim then, is to participate in God’s present and future joy. There are many reasons for His joy, and part of our work is to search out those reasons. But for now, it is enough to know that our God is joyful. Our mission is to both rest in and know this joy. A natural tendency toward “Eyore-ness” is no excuse because joy is a fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22). Neither is our broken and troubled world a limitation to joy, because joy is a mark of the kingdom of heaven, where God’s will is done perfectly. Joy, as C. S. Lewis said, is the real business of heaven, and our present job is to be about our Father’s business. Rejoice in the Lord always, and again I say rejoice!
