[email protected] INTRODUCTION Few mycological investigations have been performed in Central Asian mountains (cf. Singer 1943, Eljchibayev 1969), and for large areas, such as the subalpine and alpine belts of Altaj (Russia) and Tyan’-Shan’ (Kyrgyzstan), so far entirely lacking. The objective of this work was to study the tax- onomy and ecology of agarics collected from two Central Asian sites. MATERIALS AND METHODS The material presented below is collected in two localities: 1) the Altaj Mt. (Russia, Altaj Terr., Gorno- Altajsk Prov., Ust’-Koksa Distr., range of Katun, between the rivers of Kochurla and Akkem, near the pass of Karatyurek, 1800–2800 m a.s.l., with Betula rotundifolia, Salix spp., Juniperus spp., Dryas oxyodontha, Polygonum viviparum, single Larix sibirica and Pinus sibirica, in July and August 1969) by K. -

A PRELIMINARY CHECKLIST OF ARIZONA MACROFUNGI Scott T. Bates School of Life Sciences Arizona State University PO Box 874601 Tempe, AZ 85287-4601 ABSTRACT A checklist of 1290 species of nonlichenized ascomycetaceous, basidiomycetaceous, and zygomycetaceous macrofungi is presented for the state of Arizona. The checklist was compiled from records of Arizona fungi in scientific publications or herbarium databases. Additional records were obtained from a physical search of herbarium specimens in the University of Arizona’s Robert L. Gilbertson Mycological Herbarium and of the author’s personal herbarium. This publication represents the first comprehensive checklist of macrofungi for Arizona. In all probability, the checklist is far from complete as new species await discovery and some of the species listed are in need of taxonomic revision. The data presented here serve as a baseline for future studies related to fungal biodiversity in Arizona and can contribute to state or national inventories of biota. INTRODUCTION Arizona is a state noted for the diversity of its biotic communities (Brown 1994). Boreal forests found at high altitudes, the ‘Sky Islands’ prevalent in the southern parts of the state, and ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa P.& C. Lawson) forests that are widespread in Arizona, all provide rich habitats that sustain numerous species of macrofungi. Even xeric biomes, such as desertscrub and semidesert- grasslands, support a unique mycota, which include rare species such as Itajahya galericulata A. Møller (Long & Stouffer 1943b, Fig. 2c). Although checklists for some groups of fungi present in the state have been published previously (e.g., Gilbertson & Budington 1970, Gilbertson et al. 1974, Gilbertson & Bigelow 1998, Fogel & States 2002), this checklist represents the first comprehensive listing of all macrofungi in the kingdom Eumycota (Fungi) that are known from Arizona. -

Oxya (central Greece) fir forests, a total of 358 taxa of macromycetes, belonging in 149 genera, have been recorded. Ninety eight taxa constitute new records, and five of them are first reports for the respective genera (Athelopsis, Crustoderma, Lentaria, Protodontia, Urnula). One hundred and one records for habitat/host/substrate are new for Greece, while some of these associations are reported for the first time in literature. Key words — biodiversity, macromycetes, fir, Mediterranean region, mushrooms Introduction The mycobiota of Greece was until recently poorly investigated since very few mycologists were active in the fields of fungal biodiversity, taxonomy and systematic. Until the end of ’90s, less than 1.000 species of macromycetes occurring in Greece had been reported by Greek and foreign researchers. Practically no collaboration existed between the scientific community and the rather few amateurs, who were active in this domain, and thus useful information that could be accumulated remained unexploited. Until then, published data were fragmentary in spatial, temporal and ecological terms. The authors introduced a different concept in their methodology, which was based on a long-term investigation of selected ecosystems and monitoring-inventorying of macrofungi throughout the year and for a period of usually 5-8 years. -

These include the uplands of the Clees, Stiperstones and Long Mynd with their associated heath land, forested land such as the Forest of Wyre and the Mortimer Forest, the lowland bogs and meres in the north of the county, and agricultural land scattered with small woodlands and copses. This diversity makes Shropshire unique. The Shropshire Fungus Group has been in existence for 18 years. (Inaugural meeting 6th December 1992. The aim was to produce a fungus flora for the county. This aim has not yet been realised for a number of reasons, chief amongst these are manpower and cost. The group has however collected many records by trawling the archives, contributions from interested individuals/groups, and by field meetings. It is these records that are published here. The first Shropshire checklist was published in 1997. Many more records have now been added and nearly 40,000 of these have now been added to the national British Mycological Society’s database, the Fungus Record Database for Britain and Ireland (FRDBI). During this ten year period molecular biology, i.e. DNA analysis has been applied to fungal classification. -

Abstract: Handkea lloydii is recorded from the Alps near Lienz, Eastern Tyrol, Austria. Vascellum floridanum is recorded from Ravenna, Italy. Both records are the first in Europe of these species hith- erto known only from America. Actualized keys of the genera Handkea and Vascellum are provided. Zusammenfassung: Handkea lloydii wurde in den Alpen unweit Lienz, Osttirol, Österreich, nachge- wiesen. Vascellum floridanum wurde bei Ravenna, Italien, gefunden. Beide Funde sind die ersten Nachweise dieser bisher nur aus Amerika bekannten Arten in Europa. Aktualisierte Schlüssel für die Gattungen Handkea und Vascellum werden vorgelegt. In jüngster Zeit gelangen zwei biogeographisch überraschende Funde von gasteralen Basidiomyceten aus der Familie Lycoperdaceae in Österreich bzw. Italien. Beide Ar- ten waren bisher nur aus den USA bzw. auch aus der Karibik bekannt. Das europäi- sche Material, das den folgenden Beschreibungen zugrunde liegt, wurde von A. HAUS- KNECHT dokumentiert und von H. KREISEL aufgrund der Kenntnis amerikanischer Kollektionen determiniert. -

Twenty-eight species in the family Lycoperdaceae, commonly called ‘puffballs’, are reported from Arizona, USA. In addition to widely distributed species, understudied species (e.g., Calvatia cf. leiospora and Holocotylon brandegeeanum) are treated. Taxonomic descriptions and illustrations, which include microscopic characters, are given for each species, and a dichotomous key is presented to facilitate identification. Basidiospore morphology was also examined ultrastructurally using scanning electron microscopy, and phylogenetic analyses were carried out on nrRNA gene sequences (ITS1, ITS2, and 5.8S) from 42 species within (or closely allied to) the Lycoperdaceae.
