CONFERENCE PARTICIPATION

Since joining Wake Forest in 1985 have participated in 221 academic conferences, symposia, workshops, etc. in which I have made a presentation – paper, discussant, etc. The venue of 54 of these events has been outside the US – 26 in Pakistan; 8 in Canada; 6 in Bangladesh; 5 in Great Britain; 2 in India; and one each in Ethiopia, Egypt, Turkey, France, Spain, Australia, and Ireland. Many of the foregoing presentations have been given at professional association meetings including: International Political Science Association; Association for Asian Studies; Wisconsin South Asia Conference; American Political Science Association; Canadian Political Science Association; UC-Berkeley South Asian Conference; Middle East Studies Association. Also, many presentations have been made at thematic conferences held at university locations including: Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley, Oxford, SOAS, LSE, Wisconsin; Pennsylvania, Columbia, Duke, UNC-CH; Michigan; Calgary; Victoria; Laval; Lahore University of Management Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University; Dhaka University, Quaid-i-Azam University; International Islamic University (Islamabad) and others. Also have made presentations at numerous think tanks and policy forums including the Council on Foreign Relations; Asia Society; Woodrow Wilson International Center; Middle East Institute; National Intelligence Council, Center for Strategic and International Studies; Asia-Pacific Security Studies Center; several US State Department venues; and numerous comparable venues in Pakistan and Bangladesh.

CONFERENCE ORGANIZING

Since joining Wake Forest have served as a primary organizer of five major international conferences each related to Pakistan Studies. “Conference on Political Development and Democracy in Pakistan” (Columbia University – 1992); “Conference on Politics of Social Change in Pakistan” (Columbia University – 1994); “Law and Society in Pakistan” (Myrtle Beach, SC 1995); “The State of Pakistan Studies” (Smithsonian Institution – 1996); “Pakistan at Fifty” (Graylyn Conference Center, Wake Forest University – 1997). In 2004, was also the co- organizer of the “Bangladesh: Democracy, Governance and Resources Conference” (Center for Strategic and International Studies, Washington DC). Between 1987 and 2017 helped to organize several conferences and workshops held in Pakistan (Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi). During 2006-2008 was the co-organizer of several workshops held in various university and governmental venues in Bangladesh related to the “Building Administrative Capacities in Bangladeshi Institutes of Higher Education” project.

INVITED LECTURES

Since joining Wake Forest in 1985 I have been invited to present 90 external guest lectures (outside of Forsyth County, NC). Over fifty of these been made outside the U.S. Most of the latter were presented in Pakistan, Bangladesh, or India. Also I have presented over 100 invited guest lectures within Forsyth County since 1985.

EXTERNAL GRANT ADMINISTRATION

In connection with my role as the Director of the American Institute of Pakistan Studies (1988- 2001), I served as the “project director” and/or “principal investigator” and was the primary author for 30 United State Government (ECA/CAORC/State Department/Department of Education) or Government of Pakistan (Ministry of Foreign Affairs; Ministry of Education) grants. Also as Director AIPS I helped to establish and administer its programs in Pakistan and the US. In my role as Secretary of the American Institute of Bangladesh Studies (1999-2005) I helped to write relevant grant proposals (ECA/CAORC/State Department) and administer its programs in Bangladesh working with relevant officials in Dhaka. Also, I was co-principal investigator for the US State Department/ECA sponsored project “Building Administrative Capacity in Bangladeshi Institutes of Higher Education”, 2005-08. Between 1987 and 2008 I made over forty trips to Pakistan or Bangladesh, usually for less than one month, associated with my administrative and program obligations.
