Recorded as the patronymic of David Dobrin in the 1882 Family List in the village of Osun, near Daugavpils (Dvinsk), Latvia. Assumed to be the primogenitor also of the Dobrin family of Lutzin due to the prevelance of personal names common to both families.

Shmuel: Literate in Yiddish. According to the 1897 census was a "master butcher" although his son Yitskhak Yaakov's marriage certificate in England records Shmuel's profession as "commission agent". Although born in Lutzin, absent from the 1874 census, so probably grew up on the estate his father managed. 1897 census includes two servants: Suchbokova, Shula,17 and Gusareva, Jelena, 14. Active in "Agudas Yisroel" ultra-orthodox political party.

Lost his wife and family in the Holocaust. Yisrael escaped a similar fate since he was in the Soviet Union, trading meat, when the Germans invaded Latvia. His wife and family were trapped there and killed.
