RABBI JACOB & PEARL WEITMAN MEMORIAL LECTURE January 7, 7:30 PM

DR. IRA EPSTEIN How Hatikvah Became Israel’s National Anthem Last year, we introduced the Rabbi and Mrs. Jacob Weitman Memorial Lecture, dedicated to the memory of Rabbi Jacob and Pearl Weitman, and given by their son-in-law, Dr. Ira Epstein. This year, the topic of his annual lecture and video presentation will be How Hatikvah Became Israel’s Nation Anthem. Hatikvah has been sung in Israel for over 130 years but did not officially become the national anthem until a 2004 parliamentary decree. The version of Hatikvah that is sung today bears little resemblance to the original poem by Naftali Herz Imber that was published in 1886. The lecture will trace the development of the anthem from its original nine-verse poem to its current text consisting of two short verses and will explore the background of the anthem’s melody. Key aspects of the story will include immigration movements to Palestine, the World Zionist Congress, the Holocaust, and the declaration of the state in 1948. In addition, other contenders of a national anthem will be discussed as well as objections that have been raised to the current anthem. Numerous video clips will be used to highlight key points.
