Four additional letters written by MacDiarmid’s second wife, Valda Grieve, to Sorley MacLean have also been included as they shed further light on the relationship which evolved between the two poets over the course of almost fifty years of friendship. These letters from Valda were archived with the unpublished correspondence from MacDiarmid which the Gaelic poet preserved. The critical introduction to the letters examines the significance of these poets’ literary collaboration in relation to the Scottish Renaissance and the Gaelic Literary Revival in Scotland, both movements following Ezra Pound’s Modernist maxim, “Make it new.” The first chapter, “Forging a Friendship”, situates the development of the men’s relationship in iii terms of each writer’s literary career, MacDiarmid already having achieved fame through his early lyrics and with the 1926 publication of A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle when they first met. -

PREFACE In writing this history of the Glen family, the author is much indebted to the researches of Thomas Allen Glenn, Esq., through whose efforts so much has been gleaned of the family who were descended from the ancient feudal Barons of Ren frew, Scotland. Many thanks are also due to my friend Doctor Arthur Adams of Trinity College, Hartford, Connecticut, who has rendered such invaluable aid to me. Some of the family went from Scotland to Ireland, thence to Pennsylvania and some settled in Delaware, while another branch went from Linlithgow and settled in South Carolina. William Glen may have gone from Linlithgow via Pennsyl vania, but, at any rate we find him in South Carolina as early as 1738. His younger son, John Glen, went to Georgia before 1776, and rose to be an important man in that colony. Some years ago my cousin, Mrs. Edwin R. Warrington, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, sent me a history of the Glens of Scotland, part of which is herein included, and it was published in my history of "the Bulloch Family and Connections." Since that time the author has had access to a valuable contribution by Thomas Allen Glenn, of the Glens, published in the Penn sylvania Magazine of History and Biography, which I have freely consulted and from which I have taken much of that relating to the earlier history of the Glens, of Scotland. The services rendered by the Glens both in Scotland and in America to the country, show that they have occupied posi tions of importance. -

poetica 49 (2017/2018) 114-162 brill.com/poe Superimpositions The Poetic terrain vague of Roy Fisher’s A Furnace André Otto München [email protected] This essay reads Roy Fisher’s major long poem A Furnace as an expres- sion of post-industrial urban space and an engagement with its episte- mological, political and ethical challenges. Via its central procedure of superimposition, the text develops a spatial poetics that focusses on the dynamic constitution of space. It approaches the wider Birmingham area first through a problematization of perception, then through superim- posing topographically, historically and ontologically different spaces, and eventually culminates in a micro-physical analysis of spatial materi- alization. In presenting different ways of relating to space, the poem gives expression to a fundamentally relational notion of space. This spatial po- etics, however, not only refers to the representation of space and forms of conceptualizing space, it also creates space as a particular textual space and as a text that (re)configures and (re)forms the spaces it refers to. It makes these spaces available for cultural re-appropriations and turns the topographical space into a textual terrain vague, an intermediate space for imaginative poetic encounters and re-inscriptions. Tom Hubbard "Tell it slant": Duncan Glen and Akros In the course of In Memoriam James Joyce (1955) Hugh MacDiannid evokes the "intricately-cut gem-stone of a myriad facets / That is yet, miraculously, a whole."J Fifty years on, we may contemplate the myriad faceted work of Duncan Glen as poet, critic, editor, cultural activist, graphic designer and publisher. On 1 October 2005, at a small-press event at the Scottish Poetry Library, Duncan Glen celebrated forty years of his Akros imprint. If we can talk of the career of someone who is suspicious of careerists, it can be broadly divided into three phases. Although it has important antecedents in the fifties and early sixties (as we shall see), the first period begins in August 1965 with the launch of Akros magazine, one of the very few outlets for Scottish poetry at the time. -

This thesis examines literature that because of the frequency of its printing, and social relevance, might be called prevalent examples of a tradition. The strength of these traditions over time, and the way in which they reflect values of Lowland Scottish society are also examined. Vernacular literary tradition faced a period of crisis during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and its survival seemed uncertain. Its vitality, however, was reaffirmed mainly because it was able to evolve. The actions of several key individuals were instrumental in its maintenance, but ultimately, it was the strength of the traditions themselves which proved to be most influential. -

Poetic Experiments and Trans-national Exchange: The Little Magazines Migrant (1959-1960) and Poor.Old.Tired.Horse. (1962-1967) Lila Matsumoto PhD English Literature University of Edinburgh 2013 Thesis Abstract Migrant (1959-1960) and Poor.Old.Tired.Horse.(1962-1967) were two little magazines edited respectively by British poets Gael Turnbull and Ian Hamilton Finlay. This thesis aims to explore the magazines’ contributions to the diversification of British poetry in the 1960s, via their commitment to trans- national exchange and publication of innovative poetries. My investigation is grounded on the premise that little magazines, as important but neglected socio- literary forms, provide a nuanced picture of literary history by revealing the shifting activities and associations between groups of writers and publishers. Drawing on Pierre Bourdieu and Pascale Casanova, I argue that Migrant and Poor.Old.Tired.Horse were exceptionally outward-looking publications bringing various kinds of poetic forms, both historical and contemporary, local and international, to new audiences, and creating literary networks in the process. -

Cercles 12 (2005) ROMANTICISM AND ANIMISM in Roy Fisher’s A Furnace WILLIAM WOOTTEN London, Literary Journalist Roy Fisher’s debt to a cosmopolitan modernism has been evident from the start of his career. Cocteau, Kafka, Russian Formalism, Surrealism, Cubism, and, most importantly, the poetry of William Carlos Williams, the Objectivists and the Black Mountain School have all been cited as influences both by Fisher and his critics. This list contains no English poet. Nevertheless, Fisher’s place in an English poetic tradition has been the subject of debate. In Thomas Hardy and British Poetry Donald Davie wrote that Fisher’s temperament is “like Larkin’s profoundly Hardyesque” [154]. Others, not least Fisher himself, have disagreed with this analysis which, though often interesting and insightful, has as much to do with the temper of Davie’s book as Fisher’s writing.1 More recently, critics have seen Fisher as belonging to a rather different tradition.2 Neil Corcoran, whilst acknowledging parallels with Williams, Olson and Dorn, detects lines in City that seem “English Romantic in origin” [171]. He goes on to observe that this tendency makes Fisher—like [Christopher] Middleton—a more peculiar combination of the local and the “other” of literary Modernism than some of his own declarations of scope, which emphasise the “effect of indeterminacy” in his work, would tend to suggest. It is not entirely surprising to find him, in the preface to A Furnace (1986), acknowledging both a formal and thematic indebtedness to John Cowper Powys, that extraordinary late-Romantic exotic, and nature mystic. Although Fisher’s later work differs from his earlier in being more overtly and persistently concerned with local histories as well as topographies, I think it is possible to sense, throughout, a bizarre and individuating combination of an English provincial realism, a formal and philosophical neo-Modernism and a will towards a kind of contemporary sublime. -
