 The is a cornerstone of the ’s efforts to monitor the and its many ecosystems, whilst ensuring that its citizens are prepared and protected in the face of crises and natural or man-made disasters.

 The Copernicus Programme is a tool for economic development and a driver for digital economy.

 The Copernicus programme places a world of about our planet at the disposal of citizens, public authorities and policy makers, scientists, entrepreneurs and businesses on a full, free and open basis.

… cross-cutting Thematic Services

 = operational Space Copernicus data

 Copernicus collects, processes, and archives massive amounts of data (approx. 8 Terabyte/day or almost 3 Petabyte/year when Sentinels-1, -2 and -3 are fully operational).  Dedicated Sentinel-data and Copernicus information are being made available on a full, open and free-of-charge basis. Space

Copernicus Service – C3S -

Copernicus regulation (EU) 377/2014:

"the Climate Change service shall provide information to increase the knowledge base to support adaptation and mitigation policies. It shall in particular contribute to the provision of Essential Climate Variables (ECVs), climate analyses, projections and indicators at temporal and spatial scales relevant to adaptation and mitigation strategies for various Union's sectoral and societal benefit areas."

Space Copernicus Climate Change Service – C3S -

Delegation to ECMWF (11/11/2014) states:

"…the C3 service should be consistent with, and contribute to international initiatives conducted under the aegis of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and in particular the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS) …."

"….in its operational phase, the C3 service should constitute a significant contribution to the GFCS at the European scale, particularly the GFCS’s Climate Services Information System and Observations and Monitoring components, following the principles and recommendations thereof. …."

Space Copernicus Climate Change Service – C3S -

Consistent with global efforts on climate datasets and climate Services (i.e. GFCS).

The C3 service should be considered as a European contribution to building Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS).

C3S brings a unique pan-European dimension to Climate Services.

The operational dimension of Copernicus is a guarantee for long term sustainability of systematic observations: a necessary condition for Climate monitoring. Space
