Aunon was selected by NASA in 2009. Board certified in Internal and Aerospace Medicine, she recently served as Flight Engineer on the International Space Station for Expeditions 56 and 57. During her time on orbit, the crews contributed to hundreds of experiments in biology, biotechnology, physical science and Earth science aboard the International Space Station. Investigations were led into new cancer treatment methods and algae growth in space. The crew also installed a new Life Sciences Glovebox, a sealed work area for life science and technology investigations that can accommodate two astronauts. Serena’s first flight, she logged in 197 days in space. She currently covers medical issues and on-orbit support in the Astronaut Office. Personal Data: Born April 9, 1976 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Considers Fort Collins, CO, to be her home town. Married to Jeff Chancellor and she has a stepdaughter, Serafina Chancellor. Personal and recreational interests include mountain hiking and providing medical care to the underserved. Education: Graduated from Poudre High School, Fort Collins, Colorado in 1993. Received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from The George Washington University, Washington, D.C., in 1997 and a Doctorate of Medicine from The University of Texas - Health Science Center at Houston in 2001. Completed a three-year residency in internal medicine at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston, Texas, in 2004, and then completed an additional year as Chief Resident in the Internal Medicine Department in 2005. -

No one can deny that it was an epic trip. The European Space Agency's comet-chasing Rosetta spacecraft has arrived at its quarry, after launching more than a decade ago and travelling 6.4 billion kilometres through the Solar System. That makes it the first spacecraft to rendezvous with a comet, and takes the mission a step closer to its next, more ambitious goal of making the first ever soft landing on a comet. Speaking from mission control in Darmstadt, Germany, Matt Taylor, Rosetta project scientist for the European Space Agency (ESA), called the space mission “the sexiest there’s ever been”. Rosetta is now within 100 kilometres of its target, comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko (or 67P for short), which in July was discovered to be shaped like a rubber duck. After a six-minute thruster burn, at 11:29 a.m. local time on 6 August, ESA scientists confirmed that Rosetta had moved into the same orbit around the Sun as the comet. Rosetta is now moving at a walking pace relative to the motion of 67P — though both are hurtling through space at 15 kilometres per second. Unlike NASA’s Deep Impact and Stardust craft, and ESA’s Giotto mission, which flew by their target comets at high speed, Rosetta will now stay with the comet, taking a ring-side seat as 67P approaches the Sun, and eventually swings around it in August 2015. -

The partnership includes the USA, Russia, Canada, Japan, and Europe. Orbiting 400 kilometres above us, the ISS offers unique opportunities to observe our planet, carry out research in space and prepare for human exploration of the Solar System. ESA is responsible for two key elements of the International Space Station: the Columbus research laboratory, and the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) that delivered precious supplies to the ISS during five flights from 2008 to 2015. A European Service Module based on ATV technology will provide four major system functions to NASA’s Orion spacecraft: propulsion, power, thermal control and vital resources for the astronauts, such as water and a breathable atmosphere. -

A DUAL LAUNCH FOR DIRECT BROADCAST AND COMMUNICATIONS SERVICES Arianespace will orbit two satellites on its fifth Ariane 5 launch of the year: ASTRA 2F, which mainly provides direct-to-home (DTH) broadcast services for the Luxembourg-based operator SES, and the GSAT-10 communications satellite for the Indian Space Research Organization, ISRO. The choice of Arianespace by the world’s leading space communications operators and manufacturers is clear international recognition of the company’s excellence in launch services. Based on its proven reliability and availability, Arianespace continues to confirm its position as the world’s benchmark launch system. Ariane 5 is the only commercial satellite launcher now on the market capable of simultaneously launching two payloads and handling a complete range of missions, from launches of commercial satellites into geostationary orbit, to dedicated launches into special orbits. Arianespace and SES have developed an exceptional relationship of mutual trust over more than 20 years. ASTRA 2F will be the 36th satellite from the SES group (Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Bourse: SESG) to use an Ariane launcher. SES operates the leading direct-to-home (DTH) TV broadcast system in Europe, based on its Astra satellites, serving more than 135 million households via DTH and cable networks. Built by Astrium using a Eurostar E3000 platform, ASTRA 2F will weigh 6,000 kg at launch. Fitted with active Ku- and Ka-band transponders, ASTRA 2F will be positioned at 28.2 degrees East. It will deliver new-generation DTH TV broadcast services to Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and offers a design life of about 15 years. -
