MAIOROV (Saint Petersburg) The Byzantine origin of Prince Roman’s second wife There is much literature on the subject of the second marriage of Roman Mstislavich owing to the disagreements between historians con- cerning the origin of the Princeís new wife. According to some she bore the name Anna or, according to others, that of Maria.1 The Russian chronicles give no clues in this respect. Indeed, a Galician chronicler takes pains to avoid calling the Princess by name, preferring to call her by her hus- band’s name – “âĺëčęŕ˙ ęí˙ăčí˙ Ðîěŕíîâŕ” (Roman’s Grand Princess).2 Although supported by the research of a number of recent investiga- tors, the hypothesis that she belonged to a Volhynian boyar family is not convincing. Their arguments generally conclude with the observation that by the early thirteenth century there were no more princes in Rusí to whom it would have been politically beneficial for Roman to be related.3 Even less convincing, in our opinion, is a recently expressed supposition that Romanís second wife was a woman of low birth and was not the princeís lawful wife at all.4 Alongside this, the theory of the Byzantine ori- gin of Romanís second wife has been significantly developed in the litera- ture on the subject. -

2018 V From Her Head to Her Toes: Gender-Bending Regalia in the Tomb of Constance of Aragon, Queen of Hungary and Sicily Christopher Mielke Article: From Her Head to Her Toes: Gender-Bending Regalia in the Tomb of Constance of Aragon, Queen of Hungary and Sicily From Her Head to Her Toes: Gender-Bending Regalia in the Tomb of Constance of Aragon, Queen of Hungary and Sicily Christopher Mielke INDEPENDENT SCHOLAR Abstract: This article re-examines József Deér’s claim that the crown uncovered in the tomb of Constance of Aragon (d. 1222) was originally her husband’s. His argument is based entirely on the shape of the crown itself, and ignores the context of her burial and the other idiosyncrasies of Frederick II’s burial provisions at Palermo Cathedral. By examining the contents of the grave of Constance, and by discussing patterns related to the size of medieval crowns recovered from archaeological context, the evidence indicates that this crown would have originally adorned the buried queen’s head. Rather than identifying it as a ‘male’ crown that found its way into the queen’s sarcophagus as a gift from her husband, this article argues that Constance’s crown is evidence that as a category of analysis, gender is not as simple as it may appear. In fact, medieval crowns often had multiple owners and sometimes a crown could be owned, or even worn, by someone who had a different gender than the original owner. This fact demonstrates the need for a more complex, nuanced interpretation of regalia found in an archaeological context. -

Female Messages from the High Altar Kristina Potuckova Mlynica,1 now a small village nested under the High Tatra Mountains in the Spiš region of present-day Slovakia, was once a small town of some importance. First mentioned in 1268, Mlynica was inhabited by German settlers and their descen- dants and remained largely German until World War II.2 The town is listed as a member of the League of 24 Spiš towns and its parish priest as a member of the fraternity of Spiš parish priests, although probably at a lower rank than the priest of the prosperous trading town of Levoča.3 In a situation typical of medieval Hungary’s small towns and villages, the written sources are silent on any details of Mlynica’s life or indeed Mlynica itself. The scattered mentions here and there are, however, complemented by a remarkable work of art, the late medieval high altar of St. Margaret of Antioch (around 1515-1520), the patron saint of the par- ish church. The altar was donated by Hedwig of Teschen from the Silesian branch of the Polish Piast dynasty, widow of the influential Hungarian magnat Stephen Szapolyai. In the central shrine of the altarpiece looms the statue of St. Margaret (159 cm; fig. 1) flanked by panel paintings of four female saints. The most easily re- cognizable is St. Barbara holding a chalice. Her counterpart is most likely St. Elisabeth of Thuringia feeding the poor. The other two saints have not been iden- tified so far. They obviously do not belong to the virgin martyr type. -

Hungarian Historical Review 5, no. 3 (2016): 587–617 A New sancta et fidelis societas for Saint Sigismund of Burgundy: His Cult and Iconography in Hungary during the Reign of Sigismund of Luxemburg Dragoş Gh. Năstăsoiu Central European University, Department of Medieval Studies Examining both written and pictorial evidence, this study addresses the diffusion of the cult of St Sigismund from Bohemia to Hungary during the late fourteenth century and the saint’s subsequent transformation during the fifteenth century into one of the Hungarian kingdom’s patrons. In doing so, it assesses the significance of the actions that King Sigismund took to promote Sigismund of Burgundy, his personal patron, in Hungary and shows that the king emulated the model of his father, Charles IV of Luxemburg. King Sigismund promoted his spiritual patron within his kingdom and associated him with the traditional Hungarian patrons, the sancti reges Hungariae. The king thus succeeded in accommodating the foreign saint to a new home and transforming him for a short interval into one of Hungary’s holy protectors. The natural consequence of this “holy and faithful fellowship” was the transfer of the cult from the royal milieu to the nobility of the kingdom. Willing to prove their loyalty to the king, Hungarian noblemen decorated their churches with St Sigismund’s image and depicted him in the company of the saints Stephen, Emeric, and Ladislas. The study’s larger aim is to illustrate how the political transformations of a certain period could facilitate the spread of a new saint’s cult from the cult center to another region and that a saint’s veneration could sometimes be politically motivated. -

XXV (2018), s. 140-163 LÁSZLó VESZPRÉMY Budapest KING ST LADISLAS, CHRONICLES, LEGENDS AND mIRACLES The pillars of Hungarian state authority had crystallized at the end of the twelfth century, namely, the cult of the Hungarian saint kings (Stephen, Ladislas and Prince Emeric), especially that of the apostolic king Stephen who organized the Church and state. His cult, traditions, and relics played a crucial role in the development of the Hungarian coronation ritual and rules. The cult of the three kings was canonized on the pattern of the veneration of the three magi in Cologne from the thirteenth century, and it was their legends that came to be included in the Hungarian appendix of the Legenda Aurea1. A spectacular stage in this process was the foundation of the Hungarian chapel by Louis I of Anjou in Aachen in 1367, while relics of the Hungarian royal saints were distributed to the major shrines of pilgrimage in Europe (Rome, Cologne, Bari, etc.). Together with the surviving treasures, they were supplied with liturgical books which acquainted the non-Hungarians with Hungarian history in the special and local interpretation. In Hungary, the national and political implications of the legends of kings contributed to the representation of royal authority and national pride. Various information on King Ladislas (reigned 1077–1095) is available in the chronicles, legends, liturgical lections and prayers2. In some cases, the same motifs occur in all three types of sources. For instance, as to the etymology of the saint’s name, the sources cite a rare Greek rhetorical concept (per peragogen), which was first incorporated in the Chronicle, as the context reveals, and later transferred into the Legend and the liturgical lections. -

Palmer ABSTRACT: As has already been stated, the points at which English and Hungarian culture met during the Middle Ages were infrequent and indirect. 2 In this essay we would like to investigate this theme further by drawing attention to a conjuncture in European political and cultural history in the period c. 1400, when the ruling monarchs of England and Hungary were related by marriage: Anne of Bohemia (b.1366-d.1394), the wife of Richard II of England (b.1365- d.1400), being the younger sister of Sigismund of Luxemburg, King of Hungary (b.1368-d.1437). Anne and Sigismund sat on their respective thrones concurrently from 1387 to 1394. As we shall explain, the period c. 1400 is something art historians associa te with the concept of “International Gothic”, an artistic phenomenon whereby European art adhered to shared values. These values were so homogeneous within courtly circles as to make the task of attribution according to nation sometimes precarious and potentially counterproductive. 3 By using the notion of “International Gothic” as our frame of reference we will seek to consider the degree to which the dynastic marriages described above touched the cultures of England and Hungary, and whether there was indeed any intercultural contact between the two kingdoms. 4 1 The Luxemburg Inheritance That the Luxemburgs married into the Hungarian and English royal families was not coincidental.
