On 31 December 2009, the number of officials on the regular budget stood at 144, of whom 50 belonged to the Professional category and above. This did not include 50 officials recruited specifically for training projects financed from extra- budgetary sources. The staff came from 34 countries. 2. These figures are noticeably lower than those for 2008, when the number of (regular budget and extra-budgetary) officials with fixed-term or indeterminate contracts stood at 196, as against 194 at the end of 2009 and 190 in the first half of 2010. This reflects the Centre’s constant effort, given the budget constraints it faces, to keep its staff numbers in check while preserving the knowledge and skills base needed to carry out its training operations. 3. In 2009, several movements affected the regular-budget staff structure. Ten regular-budget posts were filled, six of them in the Professional category. In addition, 13 officials were recruited for specific training projects.

    Massimo Romandini IL “DOPO ADUA” DI FERDINANDO MARTINI, GOVERNATORE CIVILE IN ERITREA (1897-1907) In un mio articolo di diversi anni fa mi sono occupato delle reazioni di Ferdinando Martini al disastro di Adua 1, mettendo nello stesso tempo in evidenza gli avvenimenti, rivisitati attra- verso l’ottica del futuro governatore dell’Eritrea, che portarono all’istituzione del Governo Civi- le nella prima colonia italiana d’Africa 2. Si trattò, com’è facile capire, di un periodo estrema- mente complesso della politica africana dell’Italia del tempo culminata nella decisione, non facile né univoca, della nomina del Martini, già noto per la sua opposizione alle avventure co- loniali della prima ora, per la sua critica facile e sempre venata di ironia, per l’apprezzabile conoscenza delle situazioni storiche e degli elementi geografici dell’Eritrea e dell’Etiopia (do- te mancante a gran parte degli uomini politici italiani del tempo), per i suoi intelligenti inter- venti alla Camera, ma non del tutto contrario, dopo la sua partecipazione alla Regia Com- missione Parlamentare d’Inchiesta per lo scandalo Livraghi-Cagnassi in Eritrea3, ad una “ri- considerazione” delle sue primitive posizioni antiafricanistiche. Nádas The reception of French opera in Italy in the late nineteenth century has received little scholarly attention. This dissertation attempts to fill at least part of that gap through studying the reception of three operas by Jules Massenet (1842–1912), the most internationally successful French composer of the fin de siècle, in Milan, the capital of the Italian music publishing industry. Massenet’s Italian reception demonstrates that opera’s relationship to Italian identity politics in the late nineteenth century was far more complex than has been previously imagined. Massenet’s operas, performed in Italian translation, occupied an ambiguous middle ground in Italian identity politics. Italian critics described Massenet’s operas as purely French, as contributing to Italian musical culture, and as inherently cosmopolitan works. Critics thus translated Massenet’s operas into Italian culture, whether as role models for or foils to Italian musical developments. Massenet also participated directly in Italian musical culture, visiting Milan frequently to supervise productions of his operas and serving as a judge in an Italian competition for new operas.

Particularly in Eritrea, the main purpose of the former colonial power was determined to maintain political and economic hegemonic position over the country. The political changes after 1947 were connected to a relevant supply of secret funds from Rome to Italian community in Eritrea in order to consolidate the pro-Italian organisations for an eventual return of Italy as a trustee power. Funds were used also to undercut anti-Italian political movements and co-opt supporters. The secret organisation known as CAE - Comitato di Assistenza Eritrea - funded Eritrean political organisations and the press in order to contrast the partition of the country or the incorporation into Ethiopia. The Italian intervention, long lasting and intense, was strictly connected to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Italian community that dominated the colonial economy.

Ma allora voi sarete temprati, perché la vita del Sud vi avrà insegnato a distinguere ciò che è vero da ciò che è menzogna! “. ______________________________________________________________________________ Sono nato il 27 Luglio del 1933 a Palermo al N° 11 di via Houel, a pochi metri dal teatro Politeama Garibaldi e da piazza Castelnuovo. (foto 1- 2) In via Houel viveva tutta la famiglia dei nonni materni Eduardo Rap e Giovanna Rap, assieme ad essi vivevano anche uno zio e le zie nonché i miei cugini, figli della zia Rachele, che era rimasta vedova con i figli Franco Pampinella, Graziella, Elena e Giovanna. Il nonno Eduardo Rap Lancia di Marcatobianco era morto nel 1930 e mia mamma Sara Rap, lo zio Guido, la zia Rachele, lo zio Ciccio, la zia Maria ( soprannominata da me Lillì ), la zia Concettina (soprannominata da me Tittì ) e la nonna Giovanna portavano ancora il lutto, purtroppo in seguito anche la zia Rachele morì lasciando orfani in casa della nonna Giovanna i miei cugini Pampinella.

Un’etichetta apposta sulla cartellina indica il n°. di fascicolo e l’area geografica di pertinenza dei documenti. Talvolta i dati furono riportati dall’incaricato dell’organizzazione del Centro di Documentazione, forse il Mariani, erroneamente, o, in assenza di essi, furono desunti dal contenuto: nel primo caso nella nostra descrizione abbiamo proceduto a correzione; nel secondo caso il lettore troverà i dati riportati in corsivo (quando si tratta del titolo del documento, dato sempre riportato in corsivo, si è aggiunta la sottolineatura), anche se spesso modificati, in quanto si è ritenuto di poter assegnare un titolo più idoneo o correggere arbitrarietà. Quando si è attribuito un titolo diverso da quello riportato sulla cartellina, si è indicato il vecchio titolo fra parentesi uncinate (< >).
