2017 Oregon Jazz Festival WELOME TO THE 13TH ANNUAL OREGON JAZZ FESTIVAL! It is with great pleasure and pride that we welcome all of our 2017 festival participants, clinicians and audience members as we celebrate the efforts of our schools and communities! This year we are thrilled to welcome our special guest artist – tenor saxophonist Ben Wendel! Formerly the Lane Jazz Festival (Lane Community College) and the Oregon Jazz Celebration (UO), the 2017 Oregon Jazz Festival brings together students, jazz educators, performing artists, and jazz enthusiasts to learn from one another and to enrich each others’ experience and enjoyment of jazz. By sharing resources and facilities, the University of Oregon and Lane Community College do even more to enhance the jazz festival experience in our community. Our philosophy is that jazz and music in general is by nature ‘non-competitive’ thus we are emphasizing a focus on jazz education creating a positive experience for all involved! Student performances with coaching sessions as well as technical clinics and concerts by our festival artists all serve to provide a forum for participants to learn more about jazz as we share our passion for this music. Participants are encouraged to support each other as they take risks and pursue with vigor their study of jazz and music performance. To this end we have brought together some of the very best jazz educator/artists available to instruct, inspire and encourage students throughout this event. We have kept last year’s unique format that will have the Saturday experience jam-packed with various activities for students. Just as in the past, each band will have a warm-up time, performance time, and post-performance clinic with world- class jazz educators. Participating big bands will also have the opportunity to split into sectionals following their post-performance clinic, where your students will get to work with clinicians in small groups. We’re very excited about this, and we believe your students will benefit tremendously from this extra attention! Welcome to the 2017 OREGON JAZZ FEST 1 Finally, our two evening concerts are designed to provide jazz student and community members the opportunity to experience ‘live jazz’ in an intimate concert setting. Friday night’s concert in Raggozino Hall on the LCC campus features our guest artist, Ben Wendel. Combos from the Lane and Oregon jazz programs will open the concert. Our Saturday evening concert in Beall Hall at the University of Oregon showcases the Lane Jazz Ensemble and the Oregon Jazz Ensemble with this year’s OJF guest artists and clinicians. This concert will also feature several encore performances from some of the day’s outstanding participating groups and soloists. The music faculty, staff and students of Lane Community College and the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance are very proud of the Oregon Jazz Festival and the opportunities we have been able to provide for our community over the years. The list of past festival guests includes Julian Lage, Branford Marsailis, Kneebody, Ingrid Jensen, Jesse Lewis, Donny McCaslin, Thomas Marriott, Don Braden, Luis Bonilla, Rich Perry, Dick Oatts, John Mosca, David Pietro, Scott Wendholdt, Eddie Daniels, Marian McPartland, Bobby Shew, Jim Rotondi, Eric Alexander, Conrad Herwig, Bob Mintzer, Mel Brown, Thara Memory and dozens more! It is through exposure to artists and educators like these that our horizons are expanded and our potential revealed. We thank you for your joining us and hope to see you again as the Oregon Jazz Festival continues to bring excellent jazz artists and educators to our students and our community for years to come. partnership IX rassegna 2017/18 ECOTOPIA Direttore Artistico M° Roberto Ottaviano Coordinatore M° Pietro Laera Ecotopia: il romanzo del nostro futuro.

Highlights include multiple domestic and international tours with artists such as Ignacio Berroa, Tigran Hamasyan, Gerald Clayton, Eric Harland, Taylor Eigsti, Snoop Dogg and the late Prince. Ben is a founding member of the Grammy nominated group Kneebody. In 2015, Ben Wendel released a music-video art project entitled The Seasons inspired by a set of twelve piano pieces written and released each month by Tchaikovsky in 1876. Wendel’s modern take on the idea was to compose and release twelve original jazz chamber duets in video format on YouTube with modern luminaries Joshua Redman, Luciana Souza, Eric Harland, Julian Lage, and Ambrose Akinmusire, among others. As the videos garnered acclaim among social networks, the project became an unexpected word of mouth success and was featured prominently in The New York Times (Best of 2015), NPR’s All Things Considered, and the CBC. In 2016, After viewing an expressionist painting by Lee Krasner at The Whitney Museum entitled The Seasons, Wendel decided to expand upon the original duets project by reimagining the arrangements for a five-piece ensemble comprised of musicians and dear friends from The Seasons – Aaron Parks (piano), Gilad Hekselman (guitar), Matt Brewer (bass) and Eric Harland (drums). The Seasons album was released on Motéma Music in October 2018 to critical acclaim. Wendel’s latest project ‘High Heart’ was premiered at Winter Jazzfest 2019 and involves incredible musicians such as Shai Maestro, Michael Mayo, Gerald Clayton, Joe Sanders and Nate Wood.

  • The Seasons Press Release
Motema Presents BEN WENDEL – THE SEASONS Featuring Aaron Parks (piano), Gilad Hekselman (guitar), Matt Brewer (bass) and Eric Harland (drums) Available October 12, 2018 “’The Seasons,’ a vividly imagined collection of duets by the saxophonist and bassoonist Ben Wendel, was one of the standout jazz records of 2015. But it was never released in album form, and took the entire year to hear in full . For the project, Mr. Wendel cast a wide net, creating what amounted to his own cross-sectional portrait of the modern jazz mainstream.” - Nate Chinen, The New York Times "Those who wish to be called creative musicians should actually create music, and hardly no one has done that better recently than Ben Wendel . ." - Gary Fukushima, LAWeekly “Tchaikovsky unveiled monthly samples of his piano suite ‘The Seasons’ throughout 1876; in 2015, this nimble saxophonist released his own ‘Seasons’ project, informed by the Russian masterwork, and presented as monthly online videos.” - The New Yorker “Almost 140 years ago, Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote a solo piano piece for every month of the year called The Seasons. Now saxophonist Ben Wendel has taken this famous body of work and reinterpreted each piece by bringing along a different artist every month. Reviewer Michelle Mercer says through these collaborations, Wendel is giving the listener insight into some of today's sharpest musicians.” - Michelle Mercer, NPR-All Things Considered FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: In 2015, Grammy nominated and award-winning saxophonist, bassoonist, composer Ben Wendel released a music-video art project entitled The Seasons - inspired by a set of twelve piano pieces written and released each month by one of his favorite classical composers, Tchaikovsky, in 1876.
