Thank you for joining us with open ears. This year we are more emboldened than ever before to share with you the profound impact of live jazz and its vibrant relevancy today. As jazz advocates, as New Yorkers, as Americans, and as global citizens striving to support equal justice for all humanity we champion this music’s inherent inspiration as a constant beacon of light through times of darkness. In this meaningful year we proudly offer artists Winter Jazzfest stages to respond to injustice, inequality and divisiveness through music. (See page 5 for details on our social justice engagement) Additionally, this season we celebrate the legacy of Thelonious Monk in the year of his 100th Birthday with his repertoire performed by Jason Moran and The Bandwagon, Peter Bernstein and others, plus a unique concert of 12 musicians reimagining the classic 1965 album Solo Monk. We are honored to welcome veteran jazz musi- cians including iconic saxophonist Pharoah Sanders kicking off the festival; Amina Claudine Myers performing solo piano; our Artist-In-Residence drummer Andrew Cyrille performing four different projects; and closing the festival Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra with Geri Allen performing a concert for social justice. We are also launching the FREE afternoon Winter Jazzfest Talks series at the New School. On Saturday January 7th join us for a panel discussion titled ‘Social Justice and the Role of Music’ with musicians Terri Lyne Carrington, Samora Pinderhughes, Greg Tate, representatives from the ACLU and Black Lives Matter, and mod- erated by cultural journalist Siddhartha Mitter. On Sunday January 8th don’t miss a live interview with Andrew Cyrille by fellow drummer Johnathan Blake and a panel discussion on the life and legacy of Thelonious Monk. (More details about these talks on page 9) As we are not the only avid jazz enthusiasts, we do expect large crowds throughout the Friday and Saturday nights. To avoid showing up to a completely full venue, please go to winterjazzfest.com/CROWDS for real-time venue capacity updates. We are proud of every single performance and are confident you will savor wherever and whenever you end up. As our community lost many towering figures this past year we would like to dedicate the 2017 festival in memory of Paul Bley, Otis Clay, David Bowie, Maurice White, Malik Isaac Taylor aka Phife Dawg, Gato Barbieri, Prince Rogers Nelson, Bernie Worrell, Rob Wasserman, Bobby Hutcherson, Buckwheat Zydeco, Phil Chess, Victor Bailey, Rudy Van Gelder, Bob Cranshaw, Toots Thielemans, Joe Temperley, Bill Henderson, Naná Vasconcelos, Ernestine Anderson, Joe Ascione, Mose Allison, Leonard Cohen, Sharon Jones, Leon Russell, Pauline Oliveros, Cicily Janus, David Mancuso and all the music spirits guiding us today. We want to thank our fearless volunteers, our radio partner WBGO, our hotel partner The Roxy, Steinway & Sons, ECM Records, Local 802 AFM, Revive Music, NY Hot Jazz and Search & Restore for all their dedication. We are genuinely grateful to all the venues and their staff including our partner venues Le Poisson Rouge and The New School. We are especially indebted to our invaluable festival team and staff. Our deepest appreciation goes out to all the musicians whose passions and talents forever enrich us all. Looking forward to sharing many impactful nights of music. Thank YOU for joining us! Directly addressing the sense of crisis confronting our nation, we stand firmly with #blacklivesmatter, the American Civil Liberties Union, and seek to address issues of discrimination, police brutality, abuse of power, xenophobia, sexual and gender dis- crimination, that are all threatening to become more deeply institutionalized in the coming administration. Artists have always been at the heart of movement-building and social solidarity. Protest and resistance are central to jazz’s existence from its beginnings as the music of marginalized black Americans. Jazz’s vitality and effectiveness in voicing truths about life in America has not changed. As wide-ranging as music can be in style, format and message, so is the manner in which it reflects the politics and social issues of today. We hope the message and music further inspire audiences, musicians, and fellow presenters to do everything possible to uphold the dignity of our culture. Winter Jazzfest will donate a share of profits from the 2017 festival to organizations who are standing up against discrimination and for social justice in America. We hope to inspire support of these causes now and in the coming years. The 2017 Winter Jazzfest season features many musical performances thematically addressing racial and social justice themes through music, words and poetry including Black Rock Coalition’s “Get-Down Revue,” Craig Harris’ “Breathe,” “Songs of Freedom” (feat. Dee Dee Bridgewater, Theo Bleckmann, Alicia Olatuja, Jazzmeia Horn and music director Ulysses Owens Jr.), Samora Pinderhughes’s “The Transforma- tions Suite,” Jaimeo Brown’s “Transcendence,” Mike Reed’s “Flesh & Bone,” as well as sets from David Murray & Class Struggle, LaFrae Sci & Sonic Black, Ralph
