123 W. 43R d ST NYC | THETOWNHa LL.ORg #TOWNHaLLpRESENTS WELCOME TO NYC WINTER JAZZFEST 2017
Welcome to the 13th annual NYC Winter Jazzfest 2017. Thank you for joining us with open ears.
This year we are more emboldened than ever before to share with you the profound impact of live jazz and its vibrant relevancy today. As jazz advocates, as New Yorkers, as Americans, and as global citizens striving to support equal justice for all humanity we champion this music’s inherent inspiration as a constant beacon of light through times of darkness. In this meaningful year we proudly offer artists Winter Jazzfest stages to respond to injustice, inequality and divisiveness through music. (See page 5 for details on our social justice engagement)
Additionally, this season we celebrate the legacy of Thelonious Monk in the year of his 100th Birthday with his repertoire performed by Jason Moran and The Bandwagon, Peter Bernstein and others, plus a unique concert of 12 musicians reimagining the classic 1965 album Solo Monk. We are honored to welcome veteran jazz musi- cians including iconic saxophonist Pharoah Sanders kicking off the festival; Amina Claudine Myers performing solo piano; our Artist-In-Residence drummer Andrew Cyrille performing four different projects; and closing the festival Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra with Geri Allen performing a concert for social justice.
We are also launching the FREE afternoon Winter Jazzfest Talks series at the New School. On Saturday January 7th join us for a panel discussion titled ‘Social Justice and the Role of Music’ with musicians Terri Lyne Carrington, Samora Pinderhughes, Greg Tate, representatives from the ACLU and Black Lives Matter, and mod- erated by cultural journalist Siddhartha Mitter. On Sunday January 8th don’t miss a live interview with Andrew Cyrille by fellow drummer Johnathan Blake and a panel discussion on the life and legacy of Thelonious Monk. (More details about these talks on page 9)
As we are not the only avid jazz enthusiasts, we do expect large crowds throughout the Friday and Saturday nights. To avoid showing up to a completely full venue, please go to winterjazzfest.com/CROWDS for real-time venue capacity updates. We are proud of every single performance and are confident you will savor wherever and whenever you end up.
As our community lost many towering figures this past year we would like to dedicate the 2017 festival in memory of Paul Bley, Otis Clay, David Bowie, Maurice White, Malik Isaac Taylor aka Phife Dawg, Gato Barbieri, Prince Rogers Nelson, Bernie Worrell, Rob Wasserman, Bobby Hutcherson, Buckwheat Zydeco, Phil Chess, Victor Bailey, Rudy Van Gelder, Bob Cranshaw, Toots Thielemans, Joe Temperley, Bill Henderson, Naná Vasconcelos, Ernestine Anderson, Joe Ascione, Mose Allison, Leonard Cohen, Sharon Jones, Leon Russell, Pauline Oliveros, Cicily Janus, David Mancuso and all the music spirits guiding us today.
We want to thank our fearless volunteers, our radio partner WBGO, our hotel partner The Roxy, Steinway & Sons, ECM Records, Local 802 AFM, Revive Music, NY Hot Jazz and Search & Restore for all their dedication. We are genuinely grateful to all the venues and their staff including our partner venues Le Poisson Rouge and The New School. We are especially indebted to our invaluable festival team and staff. Our deepest appreciation goes out to all the musicians whose passions and talents forever enrich us all.
Looking forward to sharing many impactful nights of music. Thank YOU for joining us!
Stay inspired,
Brice Rosenbloom NYC Winter Jazzfest Founder/Producer

“We Insist” - Max Roach The 2017 NYC Winter Jazzfest explicitly supports social and racial justice by presenting socially engaged artists who have urgent and beautiful musical messages to share. Directly addressing the sense of crisis confronting our nation, we stand firmly with #blacklivesmatter, the American Civil Liberties Union, and seek to address issues of discrimination, police brutality, abuse of power, xenophobia, sexual and gender dis- crimination, that are all threatening to become more deeply institutionalized in the coming administration.
Artists have always been at the heart of movement-building and social solidarity. Protest and resistance are central to jazz’s existence from its beginnings as the music of marginalized black Americans. Jazz’s vitality and effectiveness in voicing truths about life in America has not changed. As wide-ranging as music can be in style, format and message, so is the manner in which it reflects the politics and social issues of today. We hope the message and music further inspire audiences, musicians, and fellow presenters to do everything possible to uphold the dignity of our culture. Winter Jazzfest will donate a share of profits from the 2017 festival to organizations who are standing up against discrimination and for social justice in America. We hope to inspire support of these causes now and in the coming years. The 2017 Winter Jazzfest season features many musical performances thematically addressing racial and social justice themes through music, words and poetry including Black Rock Coalition’s “Get-Down Revue,” Craig Harris’ “Breathe,” “Songs of Freedom” (feat. Dee Dee Bridgewater, Theo Bleckmann, Alicia Olatuja, Jazzmeia Horn and music director Ulysses Owens Jr.), Samora Pinderhughes’s “The Transforma- tions Suite,” Jaimeo Brown’s “Transcendence,” Mike Reed’s “Flesh & Bone,” as well as sets from David Murray & Class Struggle, LaFrae Sci & Sonic Black, Ralph Peterson & Aggregate Prime, Terri Lyne Car- rington & Social Science and many others. The 2017 Winter Jazzfest launches a new series ‘Winter Jazzfest Talks’. On Saturday January 7th join us for a panel discussion titled Social Justice and the Role of Music with musicians Terri Lyne Carrington, Samora Pinderhughes, Greg Tate, representatives from the ACLU and Black Lives Matter, and moderated by cultural journalist Siddhartha Mitter. (More details about Winter Jazzfest Talks on page 9)
Please spend time at our Tumblr feed nycwjf.tumblr.com for artist features, images, and a series of 2017 Winter Jazzfest artist responses on social justice, jazz itself and Thelonious Monk, whose 100th Birthday we are celebrating this year. Some musicians’ quotes related to social justice are included below.
“I always wanted to use my art to tell stories about how people were really living, and hopefully to also help create real change for communities that are in pain. In addition, being an artist of African-American descent, I feel a responsibility to tell the truth about how this country continues to treat people of color. Most simply, I want to make the world a better place.” - Samora Pinderhughes
“It is the responsibility of the conscious musician to be the griot for the world village through their artistic expression. I am committed to making music that uplifts at the intersection of injustice and fear.” - LaFrae Sci “Social Justice to me is as essential as air.” - Steven Bernstein
“Loss of life is a stain on all our moral fabric; especially when we see a pattern like the one we are seeing now and have seen for some time.” - Kendrick Scott
“It takes solidarity in action and in words to raise the consciousness of the fearful and divisive people - the silent majority - that have rapidly emerged.” - Terri Lyne Carrington “My response to the Black Lives Matter movement is to prepare our children for this battle that is ahead of them.” - Ulysess Owens Jr. “My composition ‘Cardinals’ was initially driven by the events in Ferguson, Missouri, but in playing it we reflect on the ongoing struggle for Black Lives Matter and racial justice in our country.” - Dave Douglas “Growing up under a dictator like Pinochet, social justice has been in my life from my earliest years. It’s important because we need to come together and respect each others’ different religions, skin colors, opinions and make a world that is really for all of us...not just for some.” - Claudia Acuña “To everyone who rejects the politics of fear, hatred, and xenophobia, we need your voice. We need you in the streets.” - Darcy James Argue “Social Justice is important to me because it is about monitoring and maintaining EQUALITY FOR ALL HUMANITY” - Craig Harris

For the 2017 opening concert on Thurs- day January 5th, NYC Winter Jazzfest is proud to welcome the pioneering avant- garde saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, with support from budding British sax star Shabaka Hutchings and his group The Ancestors. Coming to prominence in John Coltrane’s group of the mid-1960s, Sanders is one of a handful of surviving members of the close-knit community of improvisers grouped as “The New Thing” who sought to turn jazz on its head by playing with a combination of previously unimagined freedom and uninhibited expression. His work with the likes of Alice Coltrane, Stanley Clarke, Bill Laswell and many others has stretched the param- eters of improvisational music for five de- cades; and his composition “The Creator Has a Master Plan” is one of the basic texts of so-called “spiritual jazz.” London- born and Barbados-raised Hutchings is one of England’s great young saxophon- ists who’s shared stages with the likes of Courtney Pine, Mulatu Astatke, Jack DeJohnette, King Sunny Ade and Floating Points, among others, and whose group Sons of Kemet won the prestigious MOBO Award for Jazz Act of the Year in 2013.
6 7 8 SAT, JAN 7 WINTER JAZZFEST TALKS SUN, JAN 8 THE NEW SCHOOL JAZZ BUILDING, 55 WEST 13TH STREET NYC
2017 marks the launch of Winter Jazzfest Talks, a series of panel discussions and artist interviews exploring the festival’s themes and including its featured artists as well as noted journalists and scholars.
SOCIAL JUSTICE & THE ROLE OF MUSIC (THE NEW SCHOOL, 5TH FLOOR THEATER: SAT JAN 7 1PM-2:30PM) In these polarized, hyper-politicized times, what is the duty of the creative musician? How best to comment or protest through music? What are the historical precedents that had impact and should be followed? These questions and others will be addressed by a panel including writer/bandleader Greg Tate (Burnt Sugar Arkestra), vet- eran drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, pianist and composer Samora Pinderhughes and representatives of both Black Lives Matter and the ACLU. The panel will be moderated by cultural journalist Siddhar- tha Mitter (The Boston Globe, The Village Voice).
METAMUSICIAN’S STOMP: ANDREW CYRILLE (THE NEW SCHOOL, 5 TH FLOOR THEATER: SUN JAN 8 1PM-2:30PM) To call Andrew Cyrille - the festival’s resident artist for 2017 - simply a drummer is to miss the point of a career-long approach to creative expression and fiery, in-the-moment invention. He’s played with a veritable Who’s Who of jazz innovators - Cecil Taylor and Coleman Hawkins, to David Murray, Carla Bley, Oliver Lake and Geri Allen - and has been a leader or co-leader of important groups since the 1970s. Cyrille will talk about his music, career, and other topics with one of his former students, the drummer Johnathan Blake.
THELONIOUS MONK MAKES A HUNDRED (THE NEW SCHOOL, 5 TH FLOOR THEATER: SUN JAN 8 3PM-4:30PM)
It is a challenge to fully measure the impact of Thelonious Sphere Monk on modern improvised music. John Coltrane called him “a musical architect of the highest order”. His compositions and concept remain refreshingly vibrant and timelessly relevant today. No student of modern jazz can bypass the lessons inherent in his use of dissonance, angular- ity and the blues. A panel of musicians and writers moderated by music historian Ashley Kahn, will convene to discuss and gauge his importance as we celebrate the start of his centennial year. 9 JAZZ CONCERT FOR DISABILITY PRIDE THU, JAN 5 THE QUAKER FRIENDS MEETING HALL, 15 RUTHERFORD PLACE Supporting the 3rd Annual Jazz Legends for Disability Pride Ron Carter, Benny Golson, Buster Williams, Jimmie Cobb, Harold Mabern, Eddie Henderson, Louis Hayes, Carl Allen, George Cole- man, Jon Faddis, Peter Bernstein, Eric Alexander, Joe Farnsworth, Buster Williams, Bill Charlap, Renee Rosnes, Kenny Washington and others will perform. Disability Pride NYC is a not for profit started by Jazz pianist/organist Mike LeDonne whose 12 year old daughter, Mary, is disabled. Our goal is to instill a sense of pride in the community and change the public perception of people with disabilities.
