È un romanzo utopico scritto da Ernest Callenbach, pubblicato nel 1975. La società descritta nel libro è una delle prime utopistiche nonché ecologiche, ed ebbe inuenza sulla controcultura e sul movimento ambientalista nel corso degli anni '70. Da questa lettura prende spunto la realizzazione del programma di questa edizione. L'idea di Cultura che sostiene la nostra Associazione è quella di una ricchezza ineguagliabile e non barattabile per uno sviluppo forte delle idee, dei sentimenti che debbono guidare ogni azione di buon governo e che non si lasci fuorviare da canoni il cui peso, è sotto gli occhi di tutti, sta raggiungendo il punto critico di non ritorno. Una idea di Cultura, attraverso lo strumento della Musica, che rende possibile una Utopia insieme al suo impatto ecosostenibile. Ed ecco che in una parola ritorna il senso di tutto questo: ECOTOPIA. Come sempre l'Associazione Culturale Nel Gioco del Jazz, che sta per toccare il traguardo della sua decima programmazione, mantiene fede agli assunti iniziali consolidandoli e potenziando, attraverso un maggiore e più efcace impiego di mezzi, il rapporto con un tessuto sociale che è cresciuto ed ha riconosciuto alla stessa Associazione un ruolo ormai trainante nelle attività territoriali. Con i suoi eventi in cartellone, oltre agli appuntamenti fuori programma, le letture editoriali, gli incontri con autori e protagonisti della vita musicale, il coinvolgimento delle scuole, l'Associazione Nel Gioco del Jazz creerà una rete di interessi ed un dibattito vivo che tiene acceso l'interesse sulla creazione di Cultura, ben oltre il momento della messa in scena e del suo circoscritto periodo. -

Bio Ben Wendel Grammy Nominated
Bio Ben Wendel Grammy nominated saxophonist Ben Wendel (born in Vancouver, raised in Los Angeles, and currently living in Brooklyn) has enjoyed a varied career as a performer, composer, producer and conductor. Highlights include multiple domestic and international tours with artists such as Ignacio Berroa, Tigran Hamasyan, Gerald Clayton, Eric Harland, Taylor Eigsti, Snoop Dogg and the late Prince. Ben is a founding member of the Grammy nominated group Kneebody. In 2015, Ben Wendel released a music-video art project entitled The Seasons inspired by a set of twelve piano pieces written and released each month by Tchaikovsky in 1876. Wendel’s modern take on the idea was to compose and release twelve original jazz chamber duets in video format on YouTube with modern luminaries Joshua Redman, Luciana Souza, Eric Harland, Julian Lage, and Ambrose Akinmusire, among others. As the videos garnered acclaim among social networks, the project became an unexpected word of mouth success and was featured prominently in The New York Times (Best of 2015), NPR’s All Things Considered, and the CBC. In 2016, After viewing an expressionist painting by Lee Krasner at The Whitney Museum entitled The Seasons, Wendel decided to expand upon the original duets project by reimagining the arrangements for a five-piece ensemble comprised of musicians and dear friends from The Seasons – Aaron Parks (piano), Gilad Hekselman (guitar), Matt Brewer (bass) and Eric Harland (drums). The Seasons album was released on Motéma Music in October 2018 to critical acclaim. Wendel’s latest project ‘High Heart’ was premiered at Winter Jazzfest 2019 and involves incredible musicians such as Shai Maestro, Michael Mayo, Gerald Clayton, Joe Sanders and Nate Wood. -

2017 Oregon Jazz Festival
WELOME TO THE 13TH ANNUAL OREGON JAZZ FESTIVAL! It is with great pleasure and pride that we welcome all of our 2017 festival participants, clinicians and audience members as we celebrate the efforts of our schools and communities! This year we are thrilled to welcome our special guest artist – tenor saxophonist Ben Wendel! Formerly the Lane Jazz Festival (Lane Community College) and the Oregon Jazz Celebration (UO), the 2017 Oregon Jazz Festival brings together students, jazz educators, performing artists, and jazz enthusiasts to learn from one another and to enrich each others’ experience and enjoyment of jazz. By sharing resources and facilities, the University of Oregon and Lane Community College do even more to enhance the jazz festival experience in our community. Our philosophy is that jazz and music in general is by nature ‘non-competitive’ thus we are emphasizing a focus on jazz education creating a positive experience for all involved! Student performances with coaching sessions as well as technical clinics and concerts by our festival artists all serve to provide a forum for participants to learn more about jazz as we share our passion for this music. Participants are encouraged to support each other as they take risks and pursue with vigor their study of jazz and music performance. To this end we have brought together some of the very best jazz educator/artists available to instruct, inspire and encourage students throughout this event. We have kept last year’s unique format that will have the Saturday experience jam-packed with various activities for students. Just as in the past, each band will have a warm-up time, performance time, and post-performance clinic with world- class jazz educators.
