NATE MCMILLAN NAMED NBA EASTERN CONFERENCE COACH of the MONTH Interim Head Coach Led Hawks on an Eight-Game Winning Streak and Their Best Month Since January 2017 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 4/1/21 CONTACT: Hawks Communications, (404) 878-3800 NATE MCMILLAN NAMED NBA EASTERN CONFERENCE COACH OF THE MONTH Interim Head Coach Led Hawks on an Eight-Game Winning Streak and Their Best Month Since January 2017 ATLANTA – Atlanta Hawks Interim Head Coach Nate McMillan was named Eastern Conference Coach of the Month for March, it was announced today by the NBA. McMillan, who was named interim head coach on March 1, led the Hawks to an 8-0 start to begin the month and became the first NBA coach to win his opening eight games after taking over in-season since 2003-04. The eight-game stretch of wins was Atlanta’s longest streak since the club won 19 straight from 12/27/14-1/31/15. The Hawks won five consecutive road games during the streak, their longest run of visiting victories since taking five in a row from 1/4/17- 1/16/17. Atlanta’s defense allowed the East’s two lowest single-game scores of the month, limiting Miami to 80 points on March 2 and holding Cleveland to 82 points on March 14. Overall, Atlanta allowed the NBA’s second-fewest points per game in March (105.7) and the East’s third-lowest FG% (.450). The Hawks posted the conference’s second-best point differential (+5.0) and the third-highest FG% differential (+.027). From March 13-18, the Hawks won four straight games by 12-or-more points, Atlanta’s longest streak of 12-point victories since winning four in a row from 12/5/14-12/10/14. The Hawks finished March with a 9-4 record, good for a .692 winning percentage, Atlanta’s best monthly mark (min. five games played) since earning a .733 winning percentage in January 2017. This is the eighth time a Hawks coach has received a Coach of the Month honor and the first time since January 2015. This marks the seventh time McMillan has won Conference Coach of the Month during his career. Phoenix Suns Head Coach Monty Williams, an assistant coach on McMillan’s staff in Portland from 2005-10, was named NBA Western Conference Coach of the Month. # TrueToAtlanta # ABOUT THE ATLANTA HAWKS Committed to entertaining and uniting the city of Atlanta since 1968, the Atlanta Hawks & State Farm Arena, under the leadership of Principal Owners Tony Ressler and Jami Gertz, continue to build bridges through basketball by following its True to Atlanta mantra. • Renormalizing Individual Performance Metrics for Cultural Heritage Management of Sports Records
Renormalizing individual performance metrics for cultural heritage management of sports records Alexander M. Petersen1 and Orion Penner2 1Management of Complex Systems Department, Ernest and Julio Gallo Management Program, School of Engineering, University of California, Merced, CA 95343 2Chair of Innovation and Intellectual Property Policy, College of Management of Technology, Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne, Lausanne, Switzerland. (Dated: April 21, 2020) Individual performance metrics are commonly used to compare players from different eras. However, such cross-era comparison is often biased due to significant changes in success factors underlying player achievement rates (e.g. performance enhancing drugs and modern training regimens). Such historical comparison is more than fodder for casual discussion among sports fans, as it is also an issue of critical importance to the multi- billion dollar professional sport industry and the institutions (e.g. Hall of Fame) charged with preserving sports history and the legacy of outstanding players and achievements. To address this cultural heritage management issue, we report an objective statistical method for renormalizing career achievement metrics, one that is par- ticularly tailored for common seasonal performance metrics, which are often aggregated into summary career metrics – despite the fact that many player careers span different eras. Remarkably, we find that the method applied to comprehensive Major League Baseball and National Basketball Association player data preserves the overall functional form of the distribution of career achievement, both at the season and career level. As such, subsequent re-ranking of the top-50 all-time records in MLB and the NBA using renormalized metrics indicates reordering at the local rank level, as opposed to bulk reordering by era.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 7/8/21 CONTACT: Hawks Communications (404) 878-3800 ATLANTA HAWKS NAME NATE McMILLAN HEAD COACH McMillan Led Hawks to 27-11 (.711) Record, Eastern Conference Finals Appearance as Interim Head Coach in 2020-21 ATLANTA – The Atlanta Hawks today announced the hiring of Nate McMillan as the franchise’s 14th full-time head coach. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed. “The incredible job Nate did after taking over this season made this an easy decision,” said Hawks President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Travis Schlenk. “We were able to see how gifted a tactician, motivator and leader he is first-hand and the high level of respect and trust he earned from our players made securing him as our head coach our top priority.” “I would like to thank Tony, Jami and Travis for putting their faith in me and giving me the opportunity to serve as head coach. I am truly blessed to be able to lead this special group into the future,” McMillan said. “I believe what we accomplished this season is just the beginning of what we can achieve if we stay connected and committed to each other.” Named Atlanta’s interim head coach on March 1, 2021, McMillan, 56, led the Hawks to a 27-11 (.711) record over the remainder of the regular season, winning his first eight contests. • Mike Krzyzewski with Jamei K
The Gold Standard Building a World-Class Team Mike Krzyzewski With Jamei K. Spatola Notes by Bob Richey Chapter 1 – Time To Choose Your People • When deciding which individuals to select to form a team, you have to ask the hard questions: o Who Are we playing against? Will we bring together to face that competition? Do we represent? o What Are our particular challenges? Was missing in our recent loses? Is our motivation? o When Are we playing? Do we assemble to grow together as a unit? o Where Are we playing? Is our venue and what particular challenges does it present? o Why Was the old system not working? Do we care? o How Do we change a culture? Do we prepare to meet our challenge? Much time to we have to prepare? • Guys who play together can beat a group of all-stars on any given night. Team over talent. Collective identity over individual ego. We borrowed from international teams like Argentina and Spain the need for familiarity with one another and for continuity. • Jerry and I both believed that it was our current system that was flawed, not the players. This system was no longer conducive to winning. • For one thing, there is no substitute for talent. And while a great attitude and a solid game plan will take you far, you cannot achieve at the highest level without having some aptitude. • I also believe that a team needs some people with experience-veterans. • Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that your group doesn’t need a youthful element.

  • Racial Double Standards? the Case of Expected Performance and Dismissals of Head Coaches In
Racial double standards? The case of expected performance and dismissals of head coaches in NBA Carlos Gomez-Gonzalez, Julio del Corral, Andrés Maroto ABSTRACT Professional basketball in the US provides an opportunity to test racial differences in the labor market. In contrast to other professional sports, such as baseball or American football, and, more deeply, to other economic sectors, black Americans are represented in influencing positions as head coaches in this competitive setting. The paper investigates the influence of the race of the coach and performance (winning ratio and an efficiency index relative to expectations) on dismissal decisions. The data includes coach- team information over a 20-year period of time in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the analysis uses several probit models. The results show that black head coaches are more likely to be fired and less prone to quit than white head coaches, ceteris paribus. Both measures of performance (efficiency and victories) also play a significant role in dismissals. Keywords: Basketball, Coaches, Dismissal, Efficiency, Race, Performance, NBA 1 1. Introduction In the words of Samuel Johnson, racial discrimination was a fact "too evident for detection and too gross for aggravation" in the American society of the first part of the 20th century (Arrow, 1998, p. 92). African Americans had a strictly limited access to certain jobs, which prevented them from creating a social network and reaching top positions (Ibarra, 1995). In recent years, although African Americans still face barriers to access leadership jobs in certain sectors, they have successfully scale top positions in professional sports, particularly in basketball.
