Can upright, uptight Marian, the town librarian, resist his powerful allure? Based on the timeless Broadway classic, The Music Man JR. adapts this masterful musical for young performers. The result is family entertainment at its best - a bold, brassy show that will have the whole town atwitter! The story follows fast-talking traveling salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City, Iowa into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys' band he vows to organize. The catch? He doesn't know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian, whose belief in Harold's powers just might help him succeed in the end in spite of himself. Character Breakdown Ensemble- The Ensemble is comprised of Adult-types, teens and kids to play townspeople, traveling salesmen, teen dancers, Wa Tan Ye girls and the boys' band. Can accommodate additional Pick-a-little ladies Male or Female Harold Hill- Harold Hill is a great role for a young person to play. We need a boy with charisma and charm, who is comfortable on stage. He should be a great actor, an good singer, and good dancer. Male Range: B3 - G5 Marion Paroo- The role of Marian is a different twist on the traditional leading lady. The character progresses greatly during the show, starting as an uptight librarian and transforming into a beautiful and trusting young woman. She must have an amazing voice, be an excellent actor, and be able to move well. She must also have an air of confidence that draws Harold and your audience to her. Female Range: G3 - G5 Charlie Cowell- is one of the premium acting-only roles. We need a strong actor with a good loud voice who is a bit of a ham and likes being on the stage and should have a good sense of comic timing. Male Non-singing Mayor Shinn- The actor playing Mayor Shinn certainly needs a good sense of comic timing, but should be able to perform the role very seriously. Mayor Shinn does not have to sing or dance, but he is responsible for a great deal of the pacing and line pick up in the show. Male Non-singing Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn- Everybody wants to play Eulalie. It's a great role for a great comic actress. Eulalie does have some singing and some dancing. Eulalie must work well with Mayor Shinn. Female Range: D4 - D5 Marcellus Washburn- This classic sidekick to Harold has been immortalized by comedic greats like Buddy Hacket. Marcellus' big number is "Shipoopi" so the character has to act well, sing reasonably well (although a character voice is best) and be able to dance. Male Range: E4 - D#5 Ethel Toffelmier- Ethel is Marcellus's girlfriend. She's described by Marcellus as "a nice comfortable girl and the bosses' niece." Ethel has some acting, some singing, and some dancing. Ethel is also one of the solo Pick-a-Little ladies.Female Range: D4 - D5 Mrs. Paroo- Mrs. Paroo is the conscience of River City. She is a great mother, stands up for what she believes in, and gently pushes Marian to think of her future. The role requires an actress who can do a good Irish Brogue, and who can sing and act. She should also look right with Marian and Winthrop. Female Ab Range: 3 - Eb5 Winthrop Paroo- Winthrop should appear to be young, his voice must be unchanged and he should be a good actor. Winthrop also needs to be able to affect a believable lisp. Winthrop has to transform from a shy child to an outspoken child who not only sings but dances! Male Range: C4 - Eb5 Amaryllis- Amaryllis is the slightly bratty girl who studies piano with Marian. Amaryllis should be a good actor, and roughly the same size as Winthrop and Gracie.

Since its founding in 1952, MTI has been responsible for supplying scripts and musical materials to theatres worldwide and for protecting the rights and legacy of the authors whom it represents. It has been a driving force in cultivating new work and in extending the production life of some of the classics: Guys and Dolls, West Side Story, Fiddler On The Roof, Les Misérables, Annie, Of Thee I Sing, Ain’t Misbehavin’, Damn Yankees, The Music Man, Evita, and the complete musical theatre works of composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim, among others. Apart from the major Broadway and Off- Broadway shows, MTI is proud to represent youth shows, revues and musicals which began life in regional theatres and have since become worthy additions to the musical theatre canon. MTI shows have been performed by 30,000 amateur and professional theatrical organizations throughout the U.S. and Canada, and in over 60 countries around the world. Whether it’s at a high school in Kansas, by an all-female troupe in Japan or the first production of West Side Story ever staged in Estonia, productions of MTI musicals involve over 10 million people each year. Although we value all our clients, the twelve thousand high schools who perform our shows are of particular importance, for it is at these schools that music and drama educators work to keep theatre alive in their community.

It was named after Camden New Jersey which was the manufacturing and distribution center of RCA Victor records. Much of the material released by Camden were reissues of albums released by RCA Victor, usually with a few less songs. Initially the label was used for classical releases but soon started releasing popular, country and comedy albums. Albums released by Camden included ones released by RCA of Canada using the same numbering system. These RCA of Canada albums were only distributed in Canada and were not listed in the Schwann catalogs. THE ORCHESTRAL WORKS OF MEREDITH WILLSON By VALERIE A. AUSTIN A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2008 1 © 2008 Valerie A. Austin 2 To my friends, family, and especially… to those teachers who opened my eyes to the world, past and present. 3 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This dissertation would not have been possible without the expert guidance of my esteemed advisor, Dr. David Z. Kushner. He was readily available to me, as he so generously is for all of his students, and always read and responded to the drafts of each chapter of my work with expediency and excellence. The members of my dissertation committee, Dr. Raymond Chobaz, Dr. Florin Curta, Dr. Art Jennings, Professor John S. Kitts-Turner, and Dr. Leslie Odom have generously given their time and expertise to better my work. A special thanks to them for their countless hours of reading, reflection, and suggestions. Vast accolades are also extended to the excellent UF music library personnel, Robena Cornwall and Michelle Wilbanks, whose assistance and attention to detail was especially valuable. I am grateful to residents of Mason City, Iowa, who welcomed me, and shared their memoires and experiences. The staff of the Mason City Public Library warrants special mention for their unflagging patience, their courtesy, and especially for their willingness to check details via e-mail and long-distance correspondence. The contributions, both material and reflective, of Mason City archivist Terry Harrison, and retired Mason City Historian Art Fischbeck, were invaluable.
