Teacher, Student Answers, Student Page Musical Unit Meredith Wilson’s The Music Man (with Robert Preston & Shirley Jones) Notes for this unit: *The goal of this unit is for students to become familiar with musicals, musical terminology, and find examples of each in other musicals. To accomplish this, each vocabulary word has two musical examples. One is from a different musical, and then one from The Music Man. Use the first example to show and explain the skill. Then have students identify the same skill in the song from the Music Man. In this way, students will see many musicals and possibly become more interested in viewing others. It also helps solidify vocabulary learned each class period. *After watching video clips, ask questions about vocabulary previously learned. Many terms fit more than one video clip. *With this unit remember to include singing songs from musicals, listening maps for musical songs, and the researching of composers and performers. Otherwise the unit simply becomes time to watch movies. *During the first two weeks of this unit, students should watch at least one musical on their own. Students should then prepare a brief summary of the plot, characters, and setting. A rating of 1-10 could also be given with reasons. It is a good idea to have them watch musicals that will be featured some other time during the unit (other than The Music Man, of course). *Since songs are only featured in this unit, watch the entire musical for a culminating event. Serve popcorn, drinks, or other snacks. If you can put it on a large projection screen, invite parents and other members of the congregation to see it too. Have the students give a brief summary of what they learned before the show so parents understand all of the work done in class. • Lyrics “Ya Got Trouble” from the Music
“Ya Got Trouble” from The Music Man Context (from Wikipedia): In July 1912, a traveling salesman, "Professor" Harold Hill (Robert Preston), arrives in the fictional location of River City, Iowa, intrigued by the challenge of swindling the famously stubborn natives of Iowa ("Iowa Stubborn"). Masquerading as a traveling band instructor, Professor Hill plans to con the citizens of River City into paying him to create a boys' marching band, including instruments, uniforms, and music instruction. Once he has collected the money and the instruments and uniforms have arrived, he will hop the next train out of town, leaving them without their money or a band. With help from his associate Marcellus Washburn (Buddy Hackett), who is now living in River City and is the only one who knows Hill's real name, "Gregory," Professor Hill incites mass concern among the parents of River City that their young boys are being seduced into a world of sin and vice by the new pool table in town ("Ya Got Trouble"). He convinces them that a boys' marching band is the only way to keep the boys of the town pure and out of trouble, and begins collecting their money ("76 Trombones"). Lyrics Harold: Well, ya got trouble, my friend, right here, I say, trouble right here in River City. Why sure I'm a billiard player, Certainly mighty proud I say I'm always mighty proud to say it. I consider that the hours I spend With a cue in my hand are golden. Help you cultivate horse sense And a cool head and a keen eye.

Although we value all our clients, the twelve thousand high schools who perform our shows are of particular importance, for it is at these schools that music and drama educators work to keep theatre alive in their community.
