I bet everyone in the audience knows at least one of the songs from The Music Man, or at least can hum along to a chorus or two. Meredith Willson’s gem written in 1957 has heart-warming themes of American optimism, small town living and the transformative power of arts in education. The simple yet profound melodies, the infectious dances and the fun, quirky characters make it a great pick for any high school drama program. Harold Hill, notorious con man, invents a problem so that he can come up with a solution. He does this by creating a public scare: the new pool table in town is going to corrupt the youth. Therefore he must convince the citizens of River City, Iowa that there is a desperate need for a kid’s band. Through charm and pure determination, Harold sells the families musical instruments, uniforms and instruction books with the promise that after only 2 weeks the kids will form a band with himself as the leader. If all goes to plan, Harold will be long gone by the time the town realizes they have been bamboozled. These people are average Americans who are as different and as individual as can be. A bickering school board, gossipy ladies, a charismatic, easy going “guy next door”, an uptight music teacher and a bumbling, self-important mayor are among the cast of characters. The one thing that truly connects them is their Iowa stubbornness and their hometown pride. Plot twist? Harold falls in love with Marian the Librarian, the uptight music teacher, and is willing to trade the consequences of being exposed for love. As is true of most of the shows from this era, the story takes a back seat to the pure enjoyment of the dancing and singing. But, the virtues of optimism, goodness and the importance of arts in the lives of both children and adults resonates as much as the tunes that we can’t get out of our heads. As a result of “the think system”, the school board members are now best buddies, Winthrop, a 10 year old problem child who recently lost his father, found his voice, and both Marian and Harold have embraced the gift of forgiveness. The trouble in River City was not the result of a pool table in town but rather the struggle to be community despite beliefs and opinions. In today’s challenging times a simple, sweet musical from long ago can teach us all a little something about navigating the waters of divisiveness with courage and an open heart.     “Ya Got Trouble” from The Music Man Context (from Wikipedia): In July 1912, a traveling salesman, "Professor" Harold Hill (Robert Preston), arrives in the fictional location of River City, Iowa, intrigued by the challenge of swindling the famously stubborn natives of Iowa ("Iowa Stubborn"). Masquerading as a traveling band instructor, Professor Hill plans to con the citizens of River City into paying him to create a boys' marching band, including instruments, uniforms, and music instruction. Once he has collected the money and the instruments and uniforms have arrived, he will hop the next train out of town, leaving them without their money or a band. With help from his associate Marcellus Washburn (Buddy Hackett), who is now living in River City and is the only one who knows Hill's real name, "Gregory," Professor Hill incites mass concern among the parents of River City that their young boys are being seduced into a world of sin and vice by the new pool table in town ("Ya Got Trouble"). He convinces them that a boys' marching band is the only way to keep the boys of the town pure and out of trouble, and begins collecting their money ("76 Trombones").     The Fresnel The newsletter of The Black Swamp Players, Inc. Bowling Green, OH Winter 2019 From the President... Dear Theater Lovers, Welcome to 2019 and the continuation of our 51st season! Clue: The Musical, our collaboration with FUMC and their dinner theater team, was a smashing success. It was such fun to see so many shows so well attended and to see such talented new faces in the cast. Thanks to Melissa Shaffer, Deb Shaffer, and Karen Long who jointly headed our production team. It warmed the heart of this grizzled Black Swamp veteran to see so many faces in our audience all at the same time. I’m guessing you felt the same way. I feel certain that The Music Man will exceed even Clue’s lofty attendance numbers. Speaking for the board, we know that we have a better product than our attendance rates would suggest. The attendance has been a concern for a number of years. We feel the best solution is finding a permanent home for our theater. We continue to look for and pursue ways for that to happen. In the meantime, I thought it worth appealing to you, our membership, and anyone else who happens to read this issue of The Fresnel for help. As I see it, the future of BSP depends on growing our audience. There are lots of ways to do that. Better marketing, more familiar shows, more musicals, larger casts are all approaches we are aware of and are to varying degrees working towards. Harold calls himself a music professor, selling band instruments, uniforms, and the idea of starting a boy’s band with the local youth.

The musical that celebrates the power of transformation is the focus of the next PCS Remix: Staged Reading series. The Music Man Staged Reading will be presented virtually on May 7 and May 8, with live performances broadcast at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are on sale now. The Music Man was created by Meredith Willson (book, music, and lyrics) and is based on a story by Willson and Franklin Lacey. The staged reading will feature a selection of songs and scenes exploring the romantic journey. Artistic Director Marissa Wolf will direct, with three artists bringing the musical to life in the classic workshop format, with scripts on music stands. Vin Shambry will take on the role of the ne’er-do-well traveling salesman Harold Hill and Leah Yorkston will play the town librarian and music teacher, Marian Paroo. Eric Little will provide music direction and piano accompaniment, and play some of the townspeople along the way. Following the performance, the team will share insights into the world of the musical. TICKETS & INFO Audiences have two chances to catch this virtual staged reading. Two live performances will be broadcast at 7:30 p.m.
