LCSO Continued from Page 1 The Lost Elephant Annual Children’s Concert, Wed., Oct. 12, 9:30 a.m., 11:10 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. (season ticket subscribers free, others pay $1 at the door), held at the Civic Auditorium, La Porte. This annual concert is presented to nearly 8,000 students and teachers from 50 area schools. Dan Kamin, a renowned mime/actor from New York, will delight guests with his vivid story of a lost elephant. The concert introduces young children to the power of musical imagery. The story con- cerns a zookeeper who shows up during a concert of animal-inspired music looking for Elmer the elephant who’s run away from the zoo. This delightful story is set to the music of Handel, Stravinsky, Rossini and others. Dan Kamin created Johnny Depp’s physical comedy routines in “Benny and Joon” and trained Robert Downey, Jr. for his Oscar-nominated performance in “Chaplin.” Hailing from New York, Dan has become a popular guest artist with symphonies around the world. Besides “The Lost Elephant” his shows include “The Haunted Orchestra,” “The Classical Clown” and “The Horrible History of Music.” In addi- tion to his work with Depp and Downey, Kamin played the part of a wooden Indian who came to life in the cult classic “ 2” and created Martian movement for Tim Burton’s “Mars Attacks!” Kamin authored Charlie Chaplin’s One-Man Show, revealing the secrets of Chaplin’s comic art. Hailed as a breakthrough work, the book boasts a preface by another Chaplin fan, Marcel Marceau. During the past few seasons Dan has performed Comedy Concertos with the Buffalo, Philadelphia, Nashville, Dallas, Singapore and other sym- phonies, directed several hit productions of classic plays in his home town of Pittsburgh, and performed his solo shows throughout America and England.

I already filed my yearly report on the Kal-Haven Trail in the June 23rd issue, so I am not going to bore you now with more details of what a joy it is to ride that linear park between South Haven and Kalamazoo in Michigan. Rather, I want to tell you of a lovely summer drive Natalie and I took to the Kal-Haven Trail’s western trailhead in South Haven from Three Oaks by way of: Galien, Buchanan, Niles, Berrien Center, Watervliet, and Van Buren County. Mostly on M-140, mind you.

The typical traffic pattern on Galien-Buchanan Road.

Then we cruised through the center of that come- back city on fabulous Front Street and soon found our- selves rolling through the southwestern Michigan countryside on Niles-Buchanan Road.

Natalie guides us east from Three Oaks along U.S. 12.

Allow me to explain: I had to download baseball photos at the Gazette in Three Oaks before deadline on Friday morning, so I suggested to Natalie we load up the bikes on the car and then head to the Kal-Haven from Three Oaks. “Like we did that time last fall,” I said, “when we picked up M-140 north of Niles and drove up to South Haven that way.” “That was lovely,” Natalie said, “you’ve got a date.” And so after beating the deadline at the Gazette, we headed east on U.S. 12 from Three Oaks with Natalie at the helm, and I manning the photographer’s nest Entering beautiful downtown Buchanan from the west on Front Street. in order to capture our epic land voyage in digital images. But after snapping only one photograph of our We soon crossed the mighty St. Joseph River on eastward progress on 12, we found ourselves being tail- Business U.S. 12 and turned left on U.S. 31 and then gated by an over-eager fellow in an enormous red pick- turned left again at Riverfront Park so we could use up contraption with a humongous boat in tow. the public amenities. Really, they should rename Berrien County some- thing like Berry County. Or Apple County. Or Cherry County. Or Peaches County. Or Blueberry County. Any of those would work, because you are going to see all of those growing in abundance as you cruise north along majestic M-140. And there are many opportunities to stop and either pick or buy ready picked produce along the way. Perhaps Natalie and I will return to one of those orchards in the near future and give you a bite-by-bite account of what it’s like to pick your own peaches or apples. Anyway, being of fairly ancient bodies, we naturally had to make another pit stop before we reached Watervliet, and there was a thoughtfully positioned roadside “rest stop” just south of I-94 for our conve- nience. There was even what looked like fresh spring Heading north on M-140 from Niles. water running out of a spigot. Life does not get better than that, sports fans. And then the real beauty began. M-140 Continued on Page 52 Last fall, when we drove north on M-140 to the Kal- Haven Trail, we lamented the entire way that I had not thought to bring along the camera. But, we decided then and there, if we were ever to drive that scenic drive again up the eastern spine of Berrien County into the very heart of Van Buren County, then we would certainly have to go forth caparisoned for battle. Thus, the photographs you see before you are tes- timony to our foresight. And rather than let my words and pictures paint a mental image of just how stunningly beautiful M- 140 is between Niles and Watervliet, you should drive it yourself next time you’re cruising about the countryside in your high-mileage hybrid. (At least I hope you’re considering a high-mileage hybrid, because, folks, gas prices are not a comin’ down any- time soon!!)

A cool rest stop on M-140 just south of Watervliet.

Our only encounter with I-94. We drove under it and kept on going. The thing you’ll notice as you toodle northward along M-140 is all the fruit that grows in Berrien County. Downtown Watervliet. It definitely merits another visit. THE Page 52 September 29, 2005

Then we breezed to the Kal-Haven Trail where we had our usual through beautiful downtown Watervliet, noting such delightful day of bicycling without cars. colorfully named businesses as “The Enchanted Florist.” Watervliet, we decided, merits a return visit, and you, no doubt, will reap the benefits one day in these pages. Sadly for us, the road north from Watervliet was not the less-traveled one we had become accustomed to, and by the time we crossed into Van Buren County we were being tail-gated by one mammoth truck or SUV after another. Everyone seemed to be in a big hurry to get somewhere soon, and Natalie’s insistence on actu- ally driving the speed limit — 55 m.p.h. — was sim- ply not good enough for our frantic fellow travelers. Enough was enough, so Natalie turned left off of M-140, and we meandered around the backroads of Van Buren County for a while until we found good old The Kal-Haven Trail awaits.
