Once again King takes the familiar, in this case the seemingly harmless family auto, and turns into a monster while placing helpless children in harm's way. I liked it; it was just creepy enough to be a scary story but not gory and bloody. I would call it horror-lite. Anyone who has read a lot of Stephen King will recognize familiar themes in the story. One of the characters even mentions , so King does acknowledge that he is borrowing from past scenarios. This novella is really more of a short story, and for Stephen King it is very short indeed. I would have expected it to be one of several stories in a collection such as Night Shift or even a favorite of mine rather than a stand alone book. A retired judge tells his lawyer about a mysterious dune that he has been compelled to visit every day since he was 10 years old. What was on that dune? There's a nice twist at the end of that one. Each story in the audiobook had a different narrator and both of them did a nice job. The children's voices in the first story were realistically done but other than that, there weren't a lot of characters and the audio was, for lack of a better way to put it, good but uneventful. If you're looking for a short creepy story or two this would be a good choice. And if you're listening while driving, watch out for abandoned cars at the rest stops! I've not read any Stephen King in ages. I can take horror in occasional doses, so getting my hands on a short story an audiobook, no less by King was somewhat appealing. Mile 81 was an enjoyable enough read -- not incredibly scary, but just creepy enough to make the reader somewhat uncomfortable. I think this is one that you could read without getting nightmares. The second, even shorter short story The Dune didn't read like horror at all, but it did pack a punch at the end, and that made it worth the read. Pete goes down to the deserted roadside turnout, Mile 81, to snoop around the deserted area. While there, he falls asleep. Outside, an old muddy station wagon pulls up and the door opens Others pull up to see if there's someone who needs help, but this turns out to be at their own peril. This was really good. It's a short story, so it goes quickly and ends just as fast. I would have liked to know more at the end - what happens to the characters next? Other than that, though, I quite enjoyed it. King has the unique talent to make the reader believe in the story and care about the realistic characters no matter how bizarre the premise of the work. This is a very good, satisfying novella for the reader offered by Kindle Singles publishers. It is well worth the very affordable price. I was completely intrigued from start to finish! Grossed out, horrified, and at times, on the edge of my seat wanting to cry out, "No! Would give it more stars but the dune was supremely boring. Mile 81 was excellent though. King is a exceptional story teller and this story is no exception to this truth. I loved the characters and settings because both worked so well together. A great and fast read! I don't generally enjoy SK's alien tales, but this one was amusing, particularly the part about a boy chasing away an alien with the use of the magnifying glass trick. Not to bad for a short story, definitely worth a listen! It sometimes made it difficult to breath while reading thanx. Short stories are Mr. Mile 81 is no exception. This story is tight. Just as you begin to suspect that something is going to happen, you are thrown, very suddenly, into the midst of the trouble. The implausible becomes plausible and there is no reprieve until the end. This sort story was okay but not great. I love short stories and have read better ones by Stephen King, but it is not bad. I was hoping to like this and I just really didn't. What got me the most was the language. After a few pages of the gross dialogue, I lost interest. It just seemed like too much cussing. And the ending was pretty anti-climatic for me too. I've come to understand that Stephen King is a hit and miss author for me. This is a pretty quick read that throws back to King's fascination with cars. The story is separated by different characters who encounter a dirty, old station wagon on an abandoned off ramp in Maine. I didn't love the development of the story. The resolution seemed to quick and easy. I know that I've read better short stories by King than this Ex. A quick throw back to classic King horror cars, this one started strong but kinda fizzled at the end. Mile 81 : Includes bonus story 'The Dune' - -

While Pete is sleeping off his drunk alot happens in the parking lot with an abandonded car and good samaritans trying to stop and help, some just don't make it out of there. Good short story but it left me wanting a little more. A quick, enjoyable read, kinda corny, but with some of the quality of the old pulp writers. A great choice to read as you decide what you want to read next. I don't know exactly what King was going for here. At the end, he throws out a dedication to a few people who supported his earlier work, so I'm guessing he was going on nostalgia? This thing reads like a really bad B-movie. Not in a good way. Also, all the mentioning of an ongoing series that he's working on and a film adaptation from his previous work Christine was kind of distracting and pulled me out of the story. I don't know what I expected. I loved Blockade Billy his short story I read last summer.. Another good story from King. The short story, "The Dune", included in the audio book is priceless for the last sentence cliffhanger. I liked this, but And I liked the action, pace, and dialogue! A car, that eats people? I just, well, a car? Interesting short story by Stephen King. This is a very short read in under an hours but worth the little it cost. This is only in ebook format. But it is Stephen King. Yes, it is weird. But it is Stephen King what more can I say? Best 'haunted car' story since 'Christine'. Ending left me feeling unfulfilled.
