I'm not even a big baseball fan and this one was one of my favorites in the book. After discovering his talent- he swears to use it sparingly and on bad people only, but this has unforeseen consequences. Since his first collection, Nightshift , published 35 years ago, Stephen King has dazzled listeners with his genius as a writer of short fiction. Not his usual. There are thrilling connections between stories, including themes of morality, the afterlife, guilt, and what we would do differently if we could see into the future or correct the mistakes of the past. A series of mile drives in college led to Mile 81 and the most homicidal car since Christine. I was delighted to see Drunken Fireworks included as it was originally released as an audiobook exclusive this summer. In this new collection he introduces each story with a passage about its origins or his motivations for writing it. After averaging out my ratings, this book came out at almost exactly 4 stars. I don't want to take anything away from this collection, as the stories are truly heart-warming. When you open a King short story collection, there's an expectation of some all-out horror, maybe some suspense or mystery and a few references to the wider King universe. All book lovers and anyone with favorite authors should love Ur. The genius is John Rothstein, an iconic author who created a famous character, Jimmy Gold, but who hasn't published a book for decades. Just like the last collection of short stories I've read, I'm not going to do an in depth review of every story. I did not have big expectations as I am not easily touched by short stories but I was engrossed by this one. The dialogue hit the nail on the head in that matter-of-fact sort of way that makes you laugh out loud, and the title — fittingly ironic indeed — tied the humor and storyline all together. My personal favorite out of the collection, and recommended whole-heartedly for every fan of a good horror story. But, if you don't mind the ending - and it should have become obvious by now that if there is one thing Stephen King cannot write well, then that's endings - this is a strong story about some interesting characters. Showing Stephen King is, obviously, one of the most-hyped authors of today, which is why the fall from so high can be so hard for his readers. I know I won't find anything as good as this out there in the book world. King and I have to say I am impressed. This is in hand. Other stories address what happens when someone discovers that he has supernatural powers--the columnist who kills people by writing their obituaries in "Obits;" the old judge in "The Dune" who, as a boy, canoed to a deserted island and saw names written in the sand, the names of people who then died in freak accidents. It was a true King story for his avid readers, his hand for the disturbing on full display here. Their case seems ironclad. I love it when that happens. King is really hitting the "What would you do? • Heritage Ethics and Human Rights of the Dead
genealogy Article Heritage Ethics and Human Rights of the Dead Kelsey Perreault ID The Institute for Comparative Studies in Literature, Art, and Culture, Carleton University, Ottawa, ON K1S 5B6, Canada; [email protected] Received: 1 May 2018; Accepted: 13 July 2018; Published: 17 July 2018 Abstract: Thomas Laqueur argues that the work of the dead is carried out through the living and through those who remember, honour, and mourn. Further, he maintains that the brutal or careless disposal of the corpse “is an attack of extreme violence”. To treat the dead body as if it does not matter or as if it were ordinary organic matter would be to deny its humanity. From Laqueur’s point of view, it is inferred that the dead are believed to have rights and dignities that are upheld through the rituals, practices, and beliefs of the living. The dead have always held a place in the space of the living, whether that space has been material and visible, or intangible and out of sight. This paper considers ossuaries as a key site for investigating the relationships between the living and dead. Holding the bones of hundreds or even thousands of bodies, ossuaries represent an important tradition in the cultural history of the dead. Ossuaries are culturally constituted and have taken many forms across the globe, although this research focuses predominantly on Western European ossuary practices and North American Indigenous ossuaries. This paper will examine two case studies, the Sedlec Ossuary (Kutna Hora, Czech Republic) and Taber Hill Ossuary (Toronto, ON, Canada), to think through the rights of the dead at heritage sites.

Stephen King's books have become a lightning rod for the tensions around issues of including "mass market" popular literature in middle and 1.i.gh school English classes and of who chooses what students read. King's fi'tion is among the most popular of "pop" literature, and among the most controversial. These essays spotlight the ways in which King's work intersects with the themes of the literary canon and its construction and maintenance, censorship in public schools, and the need for adolescent readers to be able to choose books in school reading programs. The essays and their authors are: (1) "Reading Stephen King: An Ethnography of an Event" (Brenda Miller Power); (2) "I Want to Be Typhoid Stevie" (Stephen King); (3) "King and Controversy in Classrooms: A Conversation between Teachers and Students" (Kelly Chandler and others); (4) "Of Cornflakes, Hot Dogs, Cabbages, and King" (Jeffrey D.

TEACHING SPECULATIVE FICTION IN COLLEGE: A PEDAGOGY FOR MAKING ENGLISH STUDIES RELEVANT by JAMES HAMMOND SHIMKUS Under the Direction of Dr. Elizabeth Burmester ABSTRACT Speculative fiction (science fiction, fantasy, and horror) has steadily gained popularity both in culture and as a subject for study in college. While many helpful resources on teaching a particular genre or teaching particular texts within a genre exist, college teachers who have not previously taught science fiction, fantasy, or horror will benefit from a broader pedagogical overview of speculative fiction, and that is what this resource provides. Teachers who have previously taught speculative fiction may also benefit from the selection of alternative texts presented here. This resource includes an argument for the consideration of more speculative fiction in college English classes, whether in composition, literature, or creative writing, as well as overviews of the main theoretical discussions and definitions of each genre.

LITERATURE ~O} OXFORD"" Made into a powerful, award-winning film in 1970, this important Kannada novel of the sixties has received widespread acclaim from both critics and general read ers since its first publication in 1965. As a religious novel about a decaying brahmin colony in the south Indian village of Karnataka, Samskara serves as an allegory rich in realistic detail, a contemporary reworking of ancient Hindu themes and myths, and a serious, poetic study of a religious man living in a community of priests gone to seed. A death, which stands as the central event in the plot, brings in its wake a plague, many more deaths, live questions with only dead answers, moral chaos, and the rebirth of one man. The volume provides a useful glos sary of Hindu myths, customs, Indian names, flora, and other terms. Notes and an afterword enhance the self contained, faithful, and yet readable translation. U.R. • The Ultimate Rite of Passage: Death and Beyond in “The Golden Key” and at the Back of the North Wind
The Ultimate Rite of Passage: Death and Beyond in “The Golden Key” and At the Back of the North Wind Marilyn Pemberton They thought he was dead. I knew that he had gone to the back of the north wind. roduco I “Once upon a time” and “they lived happily ever after” explicitly or implicitly frame a fairy tale and as such signal to readers that they are entering a world that is “rarely precisely fixed in time or space” (Harries 104). The Janus-faced fairy tale promises to tell of events that not only happened in the distant past but also to project into the infinite future. In reality, the passage of time, of course, leads inexorably towards death, but this is rarely mentioned in a traditional fairy tale; the majority of stories end when the goal is attained, the prize is won, the princess is wed. Where death is mentioned it is usually as a judgement for wrong-doing: when Bluebeard is killed by his wife’s brothers for his homicidal tendencies, when the Black Brothers in Ruskin’s “The King of the Golden River” (1850) are turned to stone for their avarice, when the cannibalistic old witch is lured into the oven by Gretel and burned to death, or when Snow White’s stepmother is forced to put on red-hot slippers and dance until she falls down dead. Occasionally, the good die and these are invariably “happy deaths,” which explicitly tell of the end to earthly suffering, the glory of God and the joy of heaven.

The European CLIWAT project (CLImate change and Ground WATer) focus on the climate change in the North Sea Region and its consequences on the groundwater system and how it would affect the water supply. Airborne TEM (Time domain Electromagnetic Method) is known for its ease of covering large areas in a short period of time as well as its sensitivity to changes in geology such as type of rock, porosity, grain size, fracture and clay content. The SkyTEM system is developed by the HGG Group (Aarhus University, Denmark) for groundwater investigations which makes this method suitable for the study of the North of the Province of Friesland and the Island of Terschelling (Netherlands). One of the main concerns on the Terschelling Island is the sustainability of drinkable water, were only 36% is explored on a local well and the remaining 64% comes from a pipeline from the mainland. Geophysical interpretation of the SkyTEM data reinsures existence of two fresh water lenses on the Western side of the island and on the region of Hoorn.
