The Rise of Controversial Content in Film
The Climb of Controversial Film Content by Ashley Haygood Submitted to the Department of Communication Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Masters of Arts in Communication at Liberty University May 2007 Film Content ii Abstract This study looks at the change in controversial content in films during the 20th century. Original films made prior to 1968 and their remakes produced after were compared in the content areas of profanity, nudity, sexual content, alcohol and drug use, and violence. The advent of television, post-war effects and a proposed “Hollywood elite” are discussed as possible causes for the increase in controversial content. Commentary from industry professionals on the change in content is presented, along with an overview of American culture and the history of the film industry. If you’re a believer, try to not step on sidewalk cracks, walk under ladders, break mirrors or encounter any black cats. Fear of Friday the 13th, or paraskevidekatriaphobia, has spawned a horror movies franchise and a tradition of widespread paranoia when it comes up on the calendar. If a month starts on a Sunday, you’ll have a Friday the 13th in that month. Folklore historians say it’s difficult to determine how the taboo came to be. Many believe that it originates from the Last Supper, and the 13 guests that sat at the table on the day before the Friday on which Jesus was crucified, according to Time. What began as a Christian interpretation leads some modern Americans to avoid staying at hotel rooms with the number 13, venturing above the 13th floor of a building, and won’t sit in the 13th row of an airplane. beware of venturing up to the 13th floor of any building or try not to sit in the 13th row in airplanes. Further, he maintains that the brutal or careless disposal of the corpse “is an attack of extreme violence”. To treat the dead body as if it does not matter or as if it were ordinary organic matter would be to deny its humanity. From Laqueur’s point of view, it is inferred that the dead are believed to have rights and dignities that are upheld through the rituals, practices, and beliefs of the living. The dead have always held a place in the space of the living, whether that space has been material and visible, or intangible and out of sight. This paper considers ossuaries as a key site for investigating the relationships between the living and dead. Holding the bones of hundreds or even thousands of bodies, ossuaries represent an important tradition in the cultural history of the dead. Ossuaries are culturally constituted and have taken many forms across the globe, although this research focuses predominantly on Western European ossuary practices and North American Indigenous ossuaries. This paper will examine two case studies, the Sedlec Ossuary (Kutna Hora, Czech Republic) and Taber Hill Ossuary (Toronto, ON, Canada), to think through the rights of the dead at heritage sites. -

PARENT-CHILD SPEECH AND CHILD CUSTODY SPEECH RESTRICTIONS Eugene Volokh* I. INTRODUCTION Percy Bysshe Shelley was a poet and a cad. He married his wife, Harriet West- brooke, when she was 16, but left her for Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin three years later. When he left, his and Harriet’s daughter was a year old, and Harriet was preg- nant with their son. Two years later, Harriet committed suicide. When Shelley decided to raise the children himself, Harriet’s parents refused to turn them over, and Shelley went to court. Though fathers had nearly absolute rights under then-existing English law, Shelley became one of the first fathers in English history to lose custody of his chil- dren.1 Percy Shelley was also an avowed atheist—and the Court of Chancery mostly re- lied on this, not on his infidelity or unreliability. Shelley shouldn’t be put in charge of the children’s education, the Lord Chancellor reasoned: Shelley endorsed atheism and sexual freedom, and would teach his children to do the same. Twenty years later, Justice Joseph Story likewise wrote that a father could lose his rights for “athe- istical and irreligious principles.”2 Shelley’s case may look like something out of another time and place. That time and place, it turns out, is 2001 Mississippi, where the state supreme court upheld an order giving a mother custody partly because she took the child to church more often than the father did, thus providing a better “future religious example.”3 Presumably * Gary T. Superstition and risk-taking: Evidence from “zodiac year” beliefs in China This version: February 28, 2020 Abstract We show that superstitions –beliefs without scientific grounding – have material conse- quences for Chinese individuals’ risk-taking behavior, using evidence from corporate and in- dividual decisions, exploiting widely held beliefs in bad luck during one’s “zodiac year.” We first provide evidence on individual risk-avoidance. We show that insurance purchases are 4.6 percent higher in a customer’s zodiac year, and using survey data we show that zodiac year respondents are 5 percent more likely to favor no-risk investments. Turning to corpo- rate decision-making, we find that R&D and corporate acquisitions decline substantially in a chairman’s zodiac year by 6 and 21 percent respectively. Despite having no scientific basis and no obvious function (beyond reducing the stresses of uncertainty), superstitions persist and are widespread in modern societies. It is clear that superstitions have at least superficial impact: for example, buildings often have no thirteenth floor, and airplanes have no thirteenth row, presumably because of Western superstitions surrounding the number 13. Whether these beliefs matter for outcomes with real stakes – and hence with implications for models of decision-making in substantively important economic settings – has only more recently been subject to rigorous empirical evaluation. In our paper we study risk-taking of individuals as a function of birth year, and risk-taking by firms as a function of the birth year of their chairmen.
