Silent Hill Le Moteur De La Terreur
SH2 Silent Hill 2 (PS2/PC), Konami/Konami (2001). SH3 Silent Hill 3 (PS2/PC), Konami/Konami (2003). SH4 Silent Hill 4: The Room (PS2/Xbox/PC), Konami/Konami (2004). SH: 0rigins Silent Hill: 0rigins (PSP/PS2), Konami/Konami (2007). SH: Homecoming Silent Hill: Homecoming (PS3/Xbox 360/PC), Double Helix Games/ Konami (2008). SH: Shattered Memories Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (Wii/PS2/PSP), Climax Studios/Konami (2009). SH: Downpour Silent Hill: Downpour (PS3/ Xbox 360), Vatra Games/Konami (2012). INTRODUCTION Le chemin est le but. -
Small Team, Big Licence SMALL TEAM
Interface Small team, big licence SMALL TEAM 44 / wfmag.cc Interface Small team, big licence SMALL TEAM BIG LICENCE Inside the tiny studios making games based on giant Hollywood properties WRITTEN BY AARON POTTER hile there’s definitely an upside to making a game based on a highly revered film, TV, or comic book, for the longest time, development teams working on licensed video games did so knowing that it came with a certain stigma attached. Known in industry circles for having much tighter production schedules and deadlines, games based on recognisable properties have long been synonymous with poor quality and a broad streak of cynicism. Of course, not all licensed games are bad. Rocksteady’s Arkham series gave players the thrill of being Batman; 2014’s Alien: Isolation recreated the aesthetic of Ridley Scott’s 1979 movie in painstaking (and chilling) detail, and the recently released Fallen Order has been praised in some quarters as the best Star Wars game from EA to date. But for every one of these home runs, there’s a dud like the assorted Iron Man tie-ins from 2008, or the widely derided Aliens: Colonial Marines, released in 2013. Whether they’re good, bad, or indifferent, triple-A licensed games will always exist in some capacity. But as we enter an era of gaming where more and more creatives are breaking away to form smaller studios, we’re now seeing what can happen when tiny teams get to work on some of the most famous IPs in the world. One such team is Illfonic, a Colorado-based developer currently working on the PlayStation exclusive Predator: Hunting Grounds, due out later this year. -

WITH OUR DEMONS a Thesis Submitted By
1 MONSTROSITIES MADE IN THE INTERFACE: THE IDEOLOGICAL RAMIFICATIONS OF ‘PLAYING’ WITH OUR DEMONS A Thesis submitted by Jesse J Warren, BLM Student ID: u1060927 For the award of Master of Arts (Humanities and Communication) 2020 Thesis Certification Page This thesis is entirely the work of Jesse Warren except where otherwise acknowledged. This work is original and has not previously been submitted for any other award, except where acknowledged. Signed by the candidate: __________________________________________________________________ Principal Supervisor: _________________________________________________________________ Abstract Using procedural rhetoric to critique the role of the monster in survival horror video games, this dissertation will discuss the potential for such monsters to embody ideological antagonism in the ‘game’ world which is symptomatic of the desire to simulate the ideological antagonism existing in the ‘real’ world. Survival video games explore ideology by offering a space in which to fantasise about society's fears and desires in which the sum of all fears and object of greatest desire (the monster) is so terrifying as it embodies everything 'other' than acceptable, enculturated social and political behaviour. Video games rely on ideology to create believable game worlds as well as simulate believable behaviours, and in the case of survival horror video games, to simulate fear. This dissertation will critique how the games Alien:Isolation, Until Dawn, and The Walking Dead Season 1 construct and themselves critique representations of the ‘real’ world, specifically the way these games position the player to see the monster as an embodiment of everything wrong and evil in life - everything 'other' than an ideal, peaceful existence, and challenge the player to recognise that the very actions required to combat or survive this force potentially serve as both extensions of existing cultural ideology and harbingers of ideological resistance across two worlds – the ‘real’ and the ‘game’. -

The Sanctification of ear:F Images of the Religious in Horror Films Abstract Horror film functions both as a threat and a catharsis by confronting us with our fear of death, the supernatural, the unknown and irrational, ''the other" in general, a loss of identity, and forces beyond our control. Over the last century, religious symbols and themes have played a prominent and persistent role in the on-screen construction of this confrontation. That role is, at the same time, ambiguous insofar as religious iconography has become unhinged from a compelling moral vision and reduced to mere conventions that produce a quasi-religious quality to horror that lacks the symbolic power required to engage us at the deepest level of our being. Although religious symbols in horror films are conventional in their frequent use, they may have lost all connection to deeper human questions. -
Don't Forget to Save!
Don’t Forget to Save! The Impact of User Experience Design on Workflow of Authoring Video Game Narratives (Transfer Thesis) Daniel Green Department of Science and Technology Bournemouth University A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy November 2019 This page is intentionally left blank. This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with its author and due acknowledgement must always be made of the use of any material contained in, or derived from, this thesis. This page is intentionally left blank. Abstract Since their inception, video games have been a capable storytelling device. This is only amplified as technology improves. Contemporary video games boast awide range of interaction and presentational techniques that can enrich the narrative experience. Supporting authors with tools to prototype their stories, or even as direct integration into a game, is vital. This is especially important as the complexity and length of such narratives continues to increase. Designing these kinds of tools is no easy feat. In order to develop authoring systems for game developers that support prototyping or implementation of their envisioned narratives, we must gain an understanding of the underlying constituents that make up video game narrative and their structural and relational properties. Additionally, when designing the interface of and interactions with such systems, the User Experience (UX) design decisions taken may impact the workflow of the authors to implement their vision. Therefore, we must also gain an understanding of how various UX design paradigms alter the usability of our programs. -

Review: 'Until Dawn' Adds Clever Twists to Teen Horror Genre 25 August 2015, Bylou Kesten
Review: 'Until Dawn' adds clever twists to teen horror genre 25 August 2015, byLou Kesten those hoary genre tropes, then throws in a bunch more to keep you off balance. There's a creepy psychiatrist. There's an ancient Native American curse. There's an abandoned sanitarium, and a 50-year-old tragedy that may explain all the mayhem. Don't get too comfortable once you think you've pegged the psycho killer, because there are still many hours to go before sun-up. "Until Dawn" benefits from a game, appealing young cast, led by Hayden Panettiere of "Nashville" and Rami Malek of "Mr. Robot." Peter Stormare—from "Fargo" and too many other movies to list—also shows up to deliver his special brand of This image released by Sony Computer Entertainment sublime creepiness. America LLC shows an image of Hayden Panettiere, who voices the character of Samantha, in a scene from the video game, "Until Dawn." (Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC via AP) Years of horror movies have taught us the proper response to an invitation to spend a weekend at a cabin in the woods: No thanks. If anyone followed that advice, we wouldn't have "Friday the 13th," ''The Evil Dead" or, well, "The Cabin in the Woods." But the kids in "Until Dawn" (Sony, for the PlayStation 4, $59.95) have even more reason to stay home: The last time they went, two of their friends vanished. A year later, eight teenagers decide to return to the site to try and get some closure on the tragedy. -
