    “Interconnecting circles of power” An approach to a study of the regional administration in Egypt during the reign of Thutmose III Daniela Martins Abstract: During the reign of Thutmose III, as a result of the military campaigns and of the increased importance of the army as a branch of the royal government in ancient Egypt, there was a growing tendency to favour some military officials with political and administrative positions. In this context, the aim of this paper is to analyse the Egyptian officials bearing the title of ‘governor’ or ‘mayor’ during this reign and the articulation of local powers with the king and his retinue. I discuss briefly some of the questions related to the study of regional administration and I intend to determine to what extent it is possible to identify this pattern of favour in administrative positions related to the provinces, also considering how these officials were connected with the king and his entourage. 1.     Newsletter 2013 International Training Programme Issue1, October 2013 Growth, change and a network of colleagues and friends Sitting in London on a sweltering evening, talking with Shadia Abdu Rabo, a curator from the Sudan National Museum who participated in the first ITP in 2006, I received some stern advice: ‘You should invite all of the first participants back for a second ITP, it has changed so much, there are so many aspects we did not have in that first year’. This comment captures the essence of the ITP: people from around the world staying in contact, not reticent in offering strong opinions, but especially how the Programme has been dynamic, ever-changing, building on success and learning from mistakes. The fluid nature of the Programme is a testament to the work and imagination of the ITP team, especially Claire Messenger and Shezza Rashwan, of course, but also staff across the British Museum and other UK museums. However, most improvements, new ideas and changes have resulted from suggestions made by participants, whether during the programme or after returning home. From those first sessions in June 2006, we have seen the introduction of exhibition projects, fundraising evenings at which curators present objects, the publication of a book on Hemmat Moustafa the first five years, weekend projects to assess other museum (ITP 2010) explores displays, a Facebook group administered from India and the British Museum’s science laboratories Palestine, a printed coursebook, and now the first issue of with Michela Spataro. the ITP newsletter. (Wendy Golding 2012) ii SUMMARY In this dissertation I examine the role played by the ancient Near Eastern serpent in apotropaic and prophylactic magic. Within this realm the serpent appears in roles in healing and protection where magic is often employed. The possibility of positive and negative roles is investigated. The study is confined to the Bronze Age in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and Syria-Palestine. The serpents, serpent deities and deities with ophidian aspects and associations are described. By examining these serpents and deities and their roles it is possible to incorporate a comparative element into his study on an intra- and inter- regional basis. In order to accumulate information for this study I have utilised textual and pictorial evidence, as well as artefacts (such as jewellery, pottery and other amulets) bearing serpent motifs.

    Total solar eclipses in Ancient Egypt – a new interpretation of some New Kingdom texts. David G. Smith. © March 2007 Abstract Despite the fact that the sun played such a prominent part in the religion and culture of Ancient Egypt it is surprising that there is virtually no mention of solar eclipses, which would not have been understood and so would have been terrifying. This paper discusses a class of inscriptions appearing on a number of artefacts from Deir el-Medina or nearby and also material from the Book of the Dead. In the past the inscriptions have traditionally been interpreted by researchers as referring to blindness, often of only a temporary nature, or of spiritual darkness and their co-incidence with the occurrence of Book of the Dead Spell 135 has not hitherto been noticed. Tentative dating of these artefacts has been attempted based upon their provenance and the individuals associated with them in relation to known regnal years from a generally accepted chronology supplemented by recent research for the Amarna period. An alternative hypothesis is proposed, namely that these artefacts record the witnessing of a total solar eclipse, which, not being understood at the time, was regarded as a punishment or omen, and was consequently interpreted in religious terms. It is suggested that in response to these events, Spell 135 was then used in a precautionary manner in the tombs of those who witnessed this event or their family. The paper shows that this hypothesis is not inconsistent with the available evidence. As such it must still stand and may ultimately form an important element in attempts to generate an absolute chronology.
