The hostilities between the Spaniards and the locals ceased as thousands upon thousands came to see the Our Lady of Guadalupe be received into the Catholic faith through baptism. That Sunday we pilgrims arrived with anticipation to celebrate Mass in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe where the original poncho and image of Our Lady rests proudly on the wall behind the main altar. The pageantry and devotion of the people coming wave upon wave into the plaza for Sunday Mass moved us to tears. There, in a chapel above the main nave of the church we celebrated an emotional Mass while below nearly 10,000 faithful gathered in worship as well. After tour- ing the basilica and its surroundings we made our way to Teotihuacan and saw for ourselves the extraordinary city where the Aztecs carried out their rituals of human sacrifice. Our next and final day we traveled to the city of Puebla, a charming town and UNESCO world heritage site. There we cel- ebrated Mass in the Chapel of the Rosary Church and spent the next few hours visit- ing the city’s pottery works, extraordinary cathedral and pleasant village square. We pilgrims from Oakland and Pittsburgh are grateful to Belinda Held of Unitours for her flexibility and attentiveness, and to Pepe, our Mexican tour guide for his humor and knowledge. During Pepe’s explanation about the miracle of Our Lady of Guadalupe I noticed that he kept refer- .

ring to her as the “Mexican Lady.” After , inc several days of referring to her this way I reminded him and our Oakland pilgrims that she is our lady, too. After all, her official designation is “Patroness of the Americas.” Pepe smiled at this, but at our final goodbyes he thanked us again for visiting his country and the “Mexican Lady.” None of us corrected him. We all knew that he has a lot to be proud of. r s LEWIS- H ELD/U nitou BELINDA (Rev. Reflection on Welcoming the Stranger By Kimberly Jew Beyond my work with refugees through nonprofit Upwardly Global, I started searching for new ways to respond to the world’s migration crisis. I joined our Welcome the Stranger Ministry in November and began my volunteer encounter with the Afghan refugee family of six that our parish is sponsoring. As the chair of our employment committee, I have learned so much by helping this former translator for the Army in his search in the San Francisco Bay Area. Here are three things I’ve learned as a volunteer Kimberly for Welcome the Stranger: Jew, to 1. Finding a job with a living wage in the Bay Area the right is tough.
