SALEM ACADEMY | 7 Preparing Girls and Women to Thrive in a Rapidly Changing World

Try this as an experiment sometime: Google the words “rapid changes in education.” Then start reading the headlines that bubble up at random.

Here are some of the headlines we recently came across: “Schools Must Adapt to Rapid Change” “Getting Students Ready for a Fast-Changing World.”

You get the picture. Which raises a very important question:

What is Salem Academy and College doing to adapt to this Brave New World of warp-speed change?

We have great news. As anyone who knows their Salem history will tell you, Salem Academy and College has always been an incubator for entrepreneurial thinking. (After all, educating girls and women was itself an innovative, entrepreneurial idea in 1772.) But last fall, Salem took its gift for fostering entrepreneurial thinking to a whole new level – by opening a remarkable new Center devoted to it. In 2018, Salem launched a $10 million fundraising campaign to fortify our economic stability. The short-term, focused campaign had a goal of raising $10 million in unrestricted gifts by June 30, 2019. Funds raised were utilized to support the Academy and College operational budget and to reduce institutional debt. Over 3,000 members of the Salem community stepped up in overwhelming fashion to exceed our goal by nearly $4 million. The success of this campaign made all the difference for our campus — by alleviating pressure on institutional resources so that Salem can continue to provide an exceptional educational experience for our students.

SALEM ACADEMY | 21 Cantey Alexander of BB&T (center) with President Doran, students, faculty and board members. Trailblazers Lead the Way

Since its founding, Salem Academy and College has been built and shaped by the contributions of trailblazing women. For almost 250 years, Salem has educated trailblazers who have had an impact in their careers and in their communities. In the Step Up for Salem campaign, a tributary giving society was introduced to honor women who have been trailblazers for Salem and in their communities. Transformative gifts of over $100,000 are recognized here as instrumental in the success of the campaign. Each of the alumnae co-chairs for the Step Up Trailblazer Ella Ann Lee Holding C’56 with campaign is honored as a Trailblazer. President Doran.

22 | SALEM ACADEMY “As a co-chair of the ‘Step Up for Salem’ campaign, I am so pleased I could lead by example with my commitment. I am tremendously proud of the VFKRROWKDW6DOHPKDVEHFRPH7KHVWXGHQWERG\QRZUHŴHFWVWKHEHVW of women from across the state of North Carolina and the country. I look forward to what lies ahead for Salem Academy and College.” Ellen Todd Drew C’81, Step Up Co-chair

“ Salem College is extremely important to me on multiple fronts. Not only did my time there provide me with a top-notch education and a stimulating environment, but any leadership traits that I have today can be attributed to my time at Salem. The Salem alumnae network is remarkable. Some of my closest friends, both personally and SURIHVVLRQDOO\DUHFRQQHFWHGWR6DOHPDQGP\DIƓOLDWLRQWRWKHVFKRRO continues to provide me with rich and rewarding experiences.” Nancy Taylor Sumner C’69, Step Up Co-chair

“ The idea of there not being a Salem Academy and College was incomprehensible. The early leadership story of Winston-Salem and Salem needs to be robustly and enthusiastically told as a reminder of the unique opportunities a single-sex education affords. The leadership opportunities, encouragement to engage and speak up, and the exposure to the arts are just a few of the reasons that our community must continue to ‘Step Up for Salem’ and I look forward to serving as a strong advocate for years to come.” Janie Butler Wilson A’67, Step Up Co-chair

“ I was compelled to participate in the ‘Step Up for Salem’ campaign because the school has always been a part of our family. Salem is committed to fostering a positive experience for women in higher education. It is a special place — whether attending as a traditional or adult student — and I want Salem to be able to serve future generations and maintain its strong presence in the community.” Madlon Glenn C’93

“ My decision to ‘Step Up for Salem’ was an easy one. I believe in Salem’s goals to teach strong academics as well as principles of leadership and character. I believe a Salem education prepares LWVVWXGHQWVWRVXFFHHGDQGLQVWLOOVFRQƓGHQFH,DPIRUHYHUJUDWHIXOIRUP\IRXUZRQGHUIXO\HDUVDW Salem, my lasting friendships made there, and the caring faculty and administration.” Betsy Gant C’55
