hen Richard Emmett, Andy Tennille, and Brian Ledbetter opened The Ramkat in 2017, they breathed new life into WWinston-Salem’s music scene. The Industry Hill location’s former legendary venue, Ziggy’s, had closed its doors in 2016, and local music lovers were hungry for a new haunt. But the owners’ vision extended far beyond the typical downtown rock club. National talent and local stars Sure, their city needed a destination for well-known join forces on this community stage. national acts — but from experience, the trio knew that Winston-Salem also needed a home and a launchpad for the talented musicians in their own backyard. “Music has played an important role in all of our lives,” says Tennille, whose experience includes journalist, music promoter, and photographer for Tom Petty’s last concert tour — three skills that lend themselves to promotions in the music industry. “The desire to create a local community arts space where we could collaborate with local nonprofits and educational institutions, like the UNC School of the Arts — even with visual and craft artists — was desirable on everyone's part.” That diversity extends to Ramkat’s events lineup, which includes the likes of Grandmaster Flash, Gillian Welch, and Ben Folds alongside the Branford Marsalis Quartet and UNCSA’s Jazz Ensemble. The Ramkat even hosts a monthly Yogamunnity, where, for $10, anybody can come for exercise and a beer. “We try to keep it wide open,” says Emmett. “It’s not just what we like but what the community likes. It’s a big room, with a capacity of a thousand.” On a typical Saturday night, the room might be filled with high school and college kids, all the way up to retirees. Like his partners, Emmett isn’t new to Winston-Salem’s music scene; back in 1999, he opened the Garage, at the time one of the city’s few downtown nightspots. “When I came to Winston, I fell into the developing art scene on Trade Street. I got to be a part of the downtown music program in the late 90s, charged with putting fans on the street,” he says. “I’ve always known Winston-Salem to have many great visual and musical artists in our community, and I always wanted to merge the two.” Maybe that’s why he recognized the promise of Industry Hill. “It’s a burgeoning neighborhood filled with lots of like-minded people — entrepreneurs and creatives who are interested in adding something new to the city. This energy was enticing for all of us,” he says. “Plus, there are great breweries. It’s the next iteration of creative space in Winston-Salem.”

60 | 2020 OFFICIAL VISITOR & RELOCATION GUIDE Wedding planners from the city’s top venues share their best wedding-day advice.

By: laura lee

THE BARN AT REYNOLDA VILLAGE Choose a venue with dynamic photo opportunities, recommends Tabatha Renegar. “Right on our scenic property and all within walking distance, you have this compelling history of the Reynolds family during the Roaring Twenties era. You can visit the historic Reynolda Village, wander through the lush, formal gardens, tour the 1917 historic home — now housing Reynolda House Museum of American Art — and then stay overnight at our sister property, Graylyn Estate, a 1932 historic home-turned-hotel.” Tabatha Renegar, reynoldabarn.com

HANOVER PARK VINEYARD Inspired by their own honeymoon in the south of France, the Heltons' Yadkin Valley vineyard and historic farmhouse is extra special on wedding days. Brides-to-be often ask the Heltons for advice on how to budget for the right number of glasses. “A good rule of thumb is one-and-a-half glasses of wine per guest,” Amy suggests. Amy and Michael Helton, hanoverparkwines.com

THE HISTORIC BROOKSTOWN INN Especially if you’re entertaining out-of-town guests, choose a location that gives people a sense of the local culture, suggests Allison Watts. “Built in 1837, our venue has a wonderful historic feel with twinkling lights and a brick courtyard,” says Watts. “We’re also right next to Old Salem, which provides hours of entertainment for visitors who want to explore shops and restaurants. The Arts District is also close and has a fantastic restaurant scene.” Allison Watts, brookstowninn.com

KIMPTON CARDINAL HOTEL Consider a venue that works double-duty, making life easy for you and your guests. At the Kimpton Cardinal Hotel, located downtown inside the historic R.J. Reynolds building, couples can choose from luxurious rooms for the rehearsal dinner, wedding, and reception. Williams partners with couples to create spaces and backdrops that reflect their dreams. “It’s not about what other weddings are like, regardless of popular trends,” she says. “It’s about what’s important and special to each individual couple and creating a personalized experience.” Dana Williams, thecardinalhotel.com

WINMOCK AT KINDERTON “Always have a backup plan,” says Rebecca Kearns, who manages weddings at the 80-year-old country estate – complete with indoor and outdoor settings, including their popular Loft option with wrought-iron chandeliers suspended beneath original 32-foot soaring wooden beamwork. “We often find that brides are worried about weather. At WinMock, we offer a backup plan, where ceremonies can take place indoors without weather negatively affecting an incredible experience. This has been such a stress-reliever for our couples!” Rebecca Kearns. winmock.com
