Reflexive Translation Studies Literature and Translation Literature and Translation Reflexive Translation Studies Reflexive Literature and Translation Literature and Translation In the past decades, translation studies have increasingly focused on the ethical dimension of translational activity, with an emphasis on reflexivity to assert the role of the researcher in highlighting issues of visibility, creativity and ethics. In Reflexive Translation Studies, Silvia Kadiu investigates the viability of theories that seek to empower translation by making visible its transformative dimension; for example, by championing the visibility of the translating subject, the translator’s right to creativity, the supremacy of human translation or an autonomous study of translation. Inspired by Derrida’s deconstructive thinking, Kadiu presents practical ways of challenging theories that suggest reflexivity is the only way of developing an ethical Reflexive translation. She questions the capacity of reflexivity to counteract the power relations at play in translation (between minor and dominant languages, for example) and problematises affirmative claims about (self-)knowledge by using translation itself as a Translation process of critical reflection. In exploring the interaction between form and content, Reflexive Translation Studies promotes the need for an experimental, multi-sensory and intuitive practice, which Studies Silvia Kadiu invites students, scholars and practitioners alike to engage with theory productively and creatively through translation. She is currently a Visiting Lecturer in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Westminster, London. My approach in this volume uses the movement of crossing at play in translation as a way of engaging with existing theory, while reflecting on that translating experience and unfolding in response a view of what translation is or could be about. Its premise is that translation theory – the way we perceive, describe or think about translation – is inevitably interwoven with practice. Here, theorising takes place during the translating process itself, in the act of undertaking a translation and attempting to articulate our experience of it, of facing a translation dilemma and reflecting on possible solutions. In this framework, translation is conceived as a productive process which enables an experiential, tangible mode of thinking. Engaging critically with a piece of theory by translating it constitutes a creative gesture. It presupposes that the text chosen for translation demands further exploration and interrogation, and that recontextualising it through translation may bring to light new perspectives on translation. Ultimately, this book celebrates the critical and creative power of translation, its potential for questioning established concepts and creating new ones in the process. Its invitation to apprehend texts through translation extends beyond translation studies, to students and scholars across the humanities, as well as to practitioners and thinkers beyond academia. Using translation as an instrument for critical reflection may prove constructive in a variety of ways. In the context of this volume, my focus is on translating theoretical texts from English into French and vice versa. However, I would like to invite readers to look beyond the confines of my practice and consider the range of possibilities that engaging with any given material – text, film, painting – through translation (transcreation, adaptation, ekphrasis) may instigate in their own discipline or field. viii Acknowledgments This book grew out of my doctoral research at UCL and could not have been written without the support of Timothy Mathews and Theo Hermans. Four Western scholars in particular – all of whom also had or still have careers as practising translators – have been prominent in emphasising the need for a reflexive practice of translation: Lawrence Venuti, Susan Bassnett, Henri Meschonnic and Antoine Berman. This book presents a creative way of exploring their theories. It examines the thinkers’ approaches to translation in both form and content, offering critical readings of their theories as well as practical translations of the texts that articulate them. In The Translator’s Invisibility,2 Lawrence Venuti argues that increased awareness of a translation’s conditions of production is necessary for an ethical translation practice, since translation involves a degree of ethnocentric violence that tends to erase the cultural specificity of the source text. For Venuti, a translation that highlights its own status as translation is ethical in that, instead of attempting to dissimulate the domesticating forces at play in translational activity, it draws attention to, and raises awareness of, the cultural differences between source and target texts.3 In his view, the translator has an ethical obligation

    An Ethics Of Discomfort: Supplementing Ricœur On Translation Lisa Foran School of Philosophy, University College Dublin Abstract: This article compares Paul Ricœur and Jacques Derrida on the theme of translation and in particular the ethical implications of the different ways in which they approach the untranslatable. While Ricœur’s account of translation as linguistic hospitality does offer a model for an ethical encounter with the other, I argue that this account does not go far enough. My central claim is that Ricœur’s treatment of translation overemphasizes the movement of appropriation and integration. While it may not be his intention, this emphasis could lead to a certain kind of complacency that would challenge the ethical claims Ricœur makes in favour of translation as a paradigm. I propose to supplement Ricœur’s hospitality with Derrida’s untranslatable, in order to create a situation of constant discomfort thereby guarding against ethical complacency. CHINESE EDITIONS OF GONE WITH THE WIND Gone with the Wind, written by American writer Margaret Mitchell, was published in 1936. As soon as it was distributed, it became the best seller, and was sold over 2,000,000 copies that year. In 1937, it won Pulitzer Prize and the Prize of American Publishers’ Association. Till 1949, the year Margaret Mitchell died of car accident, the novel had been translated into 18 languages, published in over forty countries, and sold about 8,000,000 copies (Preface of Gone with the Wind 2002 English edition). According to Washington Post, till 1980, the novel had been translated into 31 languages; the sales had reached over 21,000,000 copies (Zhu, 1991). In China, the movie adapted from the novel was released in Shanghai in 1940, and was cheered by Shanghai people during its show of over forty days.

It is also observed that most of the available studies focus on the linguistic and cultural problems observed in the transference of humorous elements in audio-visual texts and deal only with the translation of the specific humorous elements (e.g. wordplay) in terms of verbal humor. Anhand vieler Beispiele werden alternative literarische Übersetzungsstrategien diskutiert, die zu einer neuen Übersetzungstheorie führen: dem strategischen Ansatz. Auf Wittgensteins Sprachspieltheorie basierend wird der Begriff Treue (wortgetreu) neu definiert. Bei diesem Ansatz spielt die Übersetzung dasselbe Sprachspiel wie bei dem Ausgangstext. From the comparison, it emerges that Lowe-Porter’s translations are deeply flawed whereas those of Luke are generally reliable.

    Connections: A Journal of Language, Media and Culture Towards a Translator Criticism: (Mis)translating connections in Alice Munro’s “Too Much Happiness” Anna Antonova1 1 Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In Towards a Translation Criticism: John Donne, Antoine Berman centres translation analysis on the translator’s personality itself, suggesting the concepts of individual “position,” “project,” and “horizon” as the cornerstones of translation critique. This article will apply Berman’s model to Alice Munro’s short story “Too Much Happiness” and its Russian translation “Слишком много счастья” by Andrey Stepanov. The resulting comparative analysis framework will highlight how a translation project enforcing its inherent biases on the target text may produce a textual product misrepresenting the original and serving imperialist, rather than purely cultural, goals. Although Munro’s story, based on the life of the Russian mathematician Sophia Kovalevsky, does invite connections between the source and target cultures, the translator’s consistent self-positioning towards the heroine’s gender and nationality leads to profound shifts in meaning. Stepanov’s translation project focuses on asserting his country’s cultural and literary superiority, while revealing his condescending attitude to the female protagonist. As a result, the Russian translation of “Too Much Happiness” plays up non-essential cultural connections and undermines the author’s critical perspective on the Russian reality. At the same time, the translator’s approach discredits the story’s complex main character and effectively erases the feminist undertones of Munro’s narrative. A careful examination of this case study building on Berman’s critical model problematizes the widely-discussed concept of translator’s agency and emphasizes the importance of comprehensive translator-centred analysis which combines textual and extratextual aspects.
