Çeviri Eleştirisi Yaklaşımlarının Farklı Metin Türlerine Uygulanabilirliği, Yüksek Lisans Tezi, Ankara, 2015 Çeviri eleştirisi çeviriyi nesnel bir bakış açısıyla değerlendirmeyi amaçlamaktadır. Ancak, çeviriler önceleri sistemsiz bir şekilde değerlendirilmekte ve çeviri eleştirisi öznel değerlendirmelerle sınırlı kalmaktaydı. Çeviri eleştirisindeki temel eğilim “hata avcılığı” yapmaktan öteye geçemiyordu. Çeviri çalışmalarının akademik bir disiplin haline gelmesiyle çeviri eleştirisine olan yaklaşım önemli ölçüde değişiklik gösterdi. Çeviri eleştirisi için yeni yaklaşımlar öne sürüldü. Bu tez çeviribilim paradigmaları çerçevesinde değerlendirilen çeviri eleştirisi modellerinin farklı metin türleri üzerinde uygulanabilirliğini analiz etmeyi amaçlamıştır. Yapılan analiz çerçevesinde sırasıyla Popovic, Koller, Reiss, House, Broeck, Toury ve Berman‟ın çeviri eleştirisi yaklaşımları farklı metin türlerine uygulanmıştır. Bu çeviri eleştirisi yaklaşımlarının uygulanabilirliğini ortaya koymak için kuramsal çerçeve olarak Katharina Reiss‟ın bilgilendirici, anlatımsal ve işlemsel metin türlerini içeren metin tiplendirmesi kullanılmıştır. Son olarak, çeviri eleştirisi yaklaşımlarının yeterli olduğu ya da yetersiz kaldığı yönleri her bir metin türü için verilen örneklerle tartışılmıştır. Bu çalışmadan elde edilen bulgular çeviri eleştirisi yaklaşımlarının uygulanabilirliğinin Reiss‟ın önerdiği metin türlerine göre değişiklik gösterdiğini ortaya koymuştur. Analiz kısmındaki örnekler ışığında, bu çalışma çeviri eleştirisi yaklaşımlarının seçilen metin türlerine kısmi bir şekilde uygulanabilmesinden dolayı tüm metin türleri için geçerli bir çeviri eleştirisi olmadığı sonucuna varmıştır. Bu yüzden farklı çeviribilim paradigmaları çerçevesinde ortaya çıkan çeviri eleştirisi modellerinin belirli metinler üzerinde uygulanabilir olduğu gözlemlenmiştir. Applicability of Translation Criticism Approaches to Different Text Types, Master‟s Thesis, Ankara, 2015 Translation criticism aims at evaluating the translated work from an objective perspective. However, translations were initially reviewed unsystematically and translation criticism was confined to subjectivity. The main tendency of translation criticism was „finding faults‟. With the development of translation studies as an academic discipline, the approach towards translation criticism has changed dramatically. New approaches have been offered for translation criticism. This thesis aims at analyzing the applicability of translation criticism approaches discussed under the turns in Translation Studies to different text types. The analysis has been carried out by applying translation criticism approaches of Popovic, Koller, Reiss, House, Van den Broeck, Toury and Berman to different text types respectively. In order to discuss the applicability of translation criticism approaches, text typology of Katharina Reiss including informative, expressive and operative text types has been used as a theoretical framework. Finally, the deficiencies and advantages of translation criticism approaches have been argued within the framework of text examples chosen for each text type. The findings of this study have indicated that the applicability of translation criticism approaches has varied according to text types proposed by Reiss. In the light of the examples discussed in Analysis of Samples part, this study has concluded that there is no general translation criticism approach that can be applied to all text types since the approaches have partially been applied for the text types mentioned above. Thus, it has been observed that each translation criticism approach proposed under the turns in Translation Studies has been applicable to certain text types. In this article, the author intends to analyze Gideon Toury’s theory of translation studies and focuses on norm to show that controlled by a specific translation norm, translators tend to take a specific translation strategy, which would be helpful for readers to better understand different translated editions. Index Terms—descriptive translation studies, translation strategy, translation norm I. CHINESE EDITIONS OF GONE WITH THE WIND Gone with the Wind, written by American writer Margaret Mitchell, was published in 1936. As soon as it was distributed, it became the best seller, and was sold over 2,000,000 copies that year. In 1937, it won Pulitzer Prize and the Prize of American Publishers’ Association. Till 1949, the year Margaret Mitchell died of car accident, the novel had been translated into 18 languages, published in over forty countries, and sold about 8,000,000 copies (Preface of Gone with the Wind 2002 English edition). According to Washington Post, till 1980, the novel had been translated into 31 languages; the sales had reached over 21,000,000 copies (Zhu, 1991). In China, the movie adapted from the novel was released in Shanghai in 1940, and was cheered by Shanghai people during its show of over forty days.

It is also observed that most of the available studies focus on the linguistic and cultural problems observed in the transference of humorous elements in audio-visual texts and deal only with the translation of the specific humorous elements (e.g. wordplay) in terms of verbal humor. As a conclusion, it has been found out that there does not exist a comprehensive study in the target system that provides detailed information on the translation of verbal humor and the problems to be observed in the translation process. Since the translation strategies display differences in relation to the type of humorous device that texts include, studies focusing on the translation of different humorous devices are required. Aus dem Vergleich lässt sich feststellen, dass Lowe-Porters Übersetzungen gravierende Fehler aufzeigen, während die von Luke im Grunde genommen zuverlässig sind. Auch die Lukeschen Übersetzungen scheitern aber, wenn sie mit den poetischen, philosophischen und humoristischen Aspekten Thomas Manns Prosa konfrontiert sind. Anhand vieler Beispiele werden alternative literarische Übersetzungsstrategien diskutiert, die zu einer neuen Übersetzungstheorie führen: dem strategischen Ansatz. Auf Wittgensteins Sprachspieltheorie basierend wird der Begriff Treue (wortgetreu) neu definiert. Bei diesem Ansatz spielt die Übersetzung dasselbe Sprachspiel wie bei dem Ausgangstext. Summary Thomas Mann’s three stories Tonio Kröger, Tristan and Der Tod in Venedig are compared with the translations by Helen Lowe-Porter and David Luke respectively. From the comparison, it emerges that Lowe-Porter’s translations are deeply flawed whereas those of Luke are generally reliable.

    Reflexive Translation Studies Reflexive Literature and Translation Literature and Translation In the past decades, translation studies have increasingly focused on the ethical dimension of translational activity, with an emphasis on reflexivity to assert the role of the researcher in highlighting issues of visibility, creativity and ethics. In Reflexive Translation Studies, Silvia Kadiu investigates the viability of theories that seek to empower translation by making visible its transformative dimension; for example, by championing the visibility of the translating subject, the translator’s right to creativity, the supremacy of human translation or an autonomous study of translation. Inspired by Derrida’s deconstructive thinking, Kadiu presents practical ways of challenging theories that suggest reflexivity is the only way of developing an ethical Reflexive translation. She questions the capacity of reflexivity to counteract the power relations at play in translation (between minor and dominant languages, for example) and problematises affirmative claims about (self-)knowledge by using translation itself as a Translation process of critical reflection. In exploring the interaction between form and content, Reflexive Translation Studies promotes the need for an experimental, multi-sensory and intuitive practice, which Studies Silvia Kadiu invites students, scholars and practitioners alike to engage with theory productively and creatively through translation.     Connections: A Journal of Language, Media and Culture Towards a Translator Criticism: (Mis)translating connections in Alice Munro’s “Too Much Happiness” Anna Antonova1 1 Department of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In Towards a Translation Criticism: John Donne, Antoine Berman centres translation analysis on the translator’s personality itself, suggesting the concepts of individual “position,” “project,” and “horizon” as the cornerstones of translation critique. This article will apply Berman’s model to Alice Munro’s short story “Too Much Happiness” and its Russian translation “Слишком много счастья” by Andrey Stepanov. The resulting comparative analysis framework will highlight how a translation project enforcing its inherent biases on the target text may produce a textual product misrepresenting the original and serving imperialist, rather than purely cultural, goals. Although Munro’s story, based on the life of the Russian mathematician Sophia Kovalevsky, does invite connections between the source and target cultures, the translator’s consistent self-positioning towards the heroine’s gender and nationality leads to profound shifts in meaning. Stepanov’s translation project focuses on asserting his country’s cultural and literary superiority, while revealing his condescending attitude to the female protagonist. As a result, the Russian translation of “Too Much Happiness” plays up non-essential cultural connections and undermines the author’s critical perspective on the Russian reality. At the same time, the translator’s approach discredits the story’s complex main character and effectively erases the feminist undertones of Munro’s narrative. A careful examination of this case study building on Berman’s critical model problematizes the widely-discussed concept of translator’s agency and emphasizes the importance of comprehensive translator-centred analysis which combines textual and extratextual aspects.

Faculty of Adab and Humanities, State Islamic University Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, 2014. This research is focused on the translation field, especially about translation criticism of poetical expression in Lolita. The objective of the research is to find out how the translation criticism applied on poetical expression translation in the novel from English into Indonesian. Qualitative descriptive research, especially content analysis, is employed as the method of the research in order to reach the objective of the research above. Then, the instrument of the research is the writer himself as a prime instrument in collecting data by criticizing and assessing the types of translation criticism of the poetical expression in the novel. In order to process the data, Newmark‘s theory in translation criticism is adopted as the main reference of the research. The criticism classification such as translation as a science, translation as a craft, translation as an art, and translation as a taste are embraced to present and analyze the corpus of the research.     Translation as ‘Rewriting’: Revisiting Translation Views of Tagore and Lefevere SUVASH CHANDRA DASGUPTA Abstract Translation involves the task of transferring a text from the source language to the target one. During the process of this transfer, the source text is rewritten and eventually gets accepted in the receptor language as the ‘rewriting of the original’. Tagore for the first time applied the word ‘rewriting’ as an equivalent of creative translation but left it unexplained. Translation practices of Tagore and a few other translators confirm his belief that translation creates a new independent work. Lefevere gives the word a new lease of life in the 1980s through his writings and it has since come to be associated with his name. Both Tagore and Lefevere made theoretical contribution to the concept of ‘rewriting’. One needs to revisit their translation views to understand how ‘rewriting’ of the original comes about in the receptor language. Catford defines translation as “the replacement of textual material in one language (SL) by equivalent textual material in another language (TL) (Catford 1965: 20)”. What actually transpires during the process of this linguistic transfer is that the source text is rewritten in the target language and that the newly-written text is eventually received in the receptor language as the ‘rewriting’ of the original text.
