PRESS KIT 2004 in May of 1999, a Team of Music-Science Journalists Were on a Routine field Outing in Manhattan
PRESS KIT 2004 In May of 1999, a team of music-science journalists were on a routine field outing in Manhattan. What they discovered shocked and perplexed them. Many experts classified The Heroine Sheiks as odd and primitive throwbacks, though others pointed out that the musical structures of these creatures were absolutely unique (some even thought the species of higher intelligence.) The scientific mainstream was unconvinced. The musical DNA evidence is now in and the dissidents have been vindicated, this is a NEW species. Many scientists still insist that these creatures will be unable to adapt themselves to a conservative climate regime. Others counter that those scientists have not personally observed The Heroine Sheiks in the wild and have ignored new data (RE. SIAMESE PIPE, Rubric Records) which suggests that these creatures have in fact been expanding their range across a spectrum of ecosystems- to the alarm of many music environmentalists Bios- Eric Robel, Drums From the Great Plains of North America, this animal has astonished naturalists in that when it attacks, it appears to possess six arms! However, careful follow-up ob- servations with slow motion photography have revealed only the normal two. The phantom appendages are in fact a rare beneficial genetic mutation. Witness that the most elusive of evolutionary events – “The Hopeful Master.” Martin Ros - Guitar This newly discovered sub-species is thought by some scientists to have rafted over in recent times from another nearby island, perhaps on matted vegetation or some other flotsam. It has flourished in its new environment through its brute power and surprising cunning. -

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's influence (loud and sloppy garage-blues) was still felt throughout the country, as proven by the Immortal Lee County Killers in Alabama with The Essential Fuck-Up Blues (2001); the Black Keys in Ohio with The Big Come Up (2002); and by the Kills in Florida, playing the version popularized by the White Stripes on No Wow (2005). The Fiery Furnaces (4), formed by Matthew Friedberger and Eleanor Friedberger, siblings from Chicago who relocated to New York, exhibited a versatile and multi-faceted style on Gallowsbird's Bark (2003). Anti- crooning vocals and spiked guitar riffs as well as wildly unstable dynamics evoked the Rolling Stones at their most drunken/deranged, or Captain Beefheart's Magic Band fronted by Janis Joplin. At the same time the exuberant neglect of their arrangements was reminiscent of Pere Ubu. Blueberry Boat (2004) stretched out into longer and more ambitious songs, collages of genres and tours de force of arrangement (including electronic keyboards) that were meant to create a new form of musical theater. That form came to life on Rehearsing My Choir (2005), a work structured as a dialogue between an older woman and a younger one over a substratum of eccentric and cacophonous sounds. -

ADHOC Editorial Senior Editor: Joe Bucciero Founding Editors: Emilie Friedlander& Ric Leichtung Copy Editor: Tyler Richman Contributing Writers: Miguel Gallego& Steven Spoerl Designer: Jesse Hlebo Events Events Director: Ric Leichtung Marketing Manager: Tyler Richman Letter Can streaming services be fair to artists? Is it worth paying for playlists? Vinyl keeps selling, but now major labels are fooding the vinyl market— so will the vinyl market implode? As long-stable relationships between consumers, artists, and music companies continue to break down, listeners and artists are being thrust, stylistically and physically, into a confusing new musical environment. Call us optimists, but the chaos appears to be prompting people to put the pieces together in myriad new ways.. These days, it can seem like cultures form not around what we’re listening to but how we’re listening to it—from audio source to social context. We can’t really defne 2015 by any specifc stylistic trends, after all. Arca and Lotic share immaculate industrial sonic palettes, but the former’s Mutant and the latter’s Agitations and Heterocetera more importantly share an impact on the wider listening culture. They open up dancefoors and dancers alike to new sounds, but also new identities and approaches to discourse. On the pop side of the spectrum, Justin Bieber and Carly Rae Jepsen both sing over increasingly of-the-times productions, but more exciting than the resultant music itself is the abundance of young listeners learning to love subtly daring pop compositions and innovative vocal processing. Contrary to what some critics have said, it’s not that the mainstream and the underground have collapsed into one another; they probably never will (or should). -

DESOLATION CENTER Director and Producer: Stuart Swezey Starring: Perry Farrell, Thurston Moore, Mike Watt, Blixa Bargeld, Curt Kirkwood, Lee Ranaldo Run Time: 94 minutes Synopsis: The untold story of Reagan-era guerrilla desert happenings now recognized as the inspirations for Burning Man, Lollapalooza, and Coachella including Sonic Youth, Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Swans, Einstürzende Neubauten, and more. Press Contact: Clint Weiler (CWPR) – [email protected] – 610.781.4303 Press Materials: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/4gu5ay8mbiixjz1/AAAOuqBlPJQ76hr8jDH36QNXa?dl=0 LOGLINE DESOLATION CENTER | Page 1 of 25 The untold story of Reagan-era guerrilla desert happenings now recognized as the inspirations for Burning Man, Lollapalooza, and Coachella including Sonic Youth, Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Swans, Einstürzende Neubauten, and more. SYNOPSIS DESOLATION CENTER is the previously untold story of a series of Reagan-era guerrilla music and art performance happenings in Southern California that are recognized to have paved the way for Burning Man, Lollapalooza and Coachella, collective experiences that have become crucial parts of alternative culture in the 21st century. The feature documentary splices interviews and rare performance footage of Sonic Youth, Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Swans, Redd Kross, Einstürzende Neubauten, Survival Research Laboratories, Savage Republic and more, documenting a time when pushing the boundaries of music, art, and performance felt like an unspoken obligation. Directed by Stuart Swezey, the creator and principal organizer of the events, DESOLATION CENTER demonstrates how the risky, and at times even reckless, actions of a few outsiders can unintentionally lead to seismic cultural shifts. Combining Swezey’s exclusive access to never-before-seen archival video, live audio recordings, and stills woven together with new cinematically shot interviews, verité footage and animated sequences, DESOLATION CENTER captures the spirit of the turbulent times from which these events emerged.
