Newsletter of the Museum Archives Section Museum Archivist Summer 2020 Volume 30, Issue 2 Letter From the Chair Fellow MAS and SAA members, To be blunt, we are currently in the midst of a challenging period of historic proportions. On top of a charged atmosphere filled with vitriol, 2020 has witnessed the unfolding of both a global pandemic and racial tensions exacerbated by systemic racism in law enforcement. The combination of this perfect storm has sowed a climate of chaos and uncertainty. It is easy to feel demoralized and discouraged. For your own mental health, allow yourself to feel. Allow yourself to take a breath and acknowledge that you are bearing witness to a uniquely challenging period like few in global history. Yet, there is reason to hope. The trite phrase, “that which does not kill us only makes us stronger” has significance. We adapt, learn, grow and improve. If this all is to be viewed as an incredible challenge, rest assured, we will overcome it. (To use yet another timeless phrase, “this, too, shall pass.”) I am curious to see what new measures, what new policies, what new courses of action we, as professionals in the field(s) of libraries, archives, and museums (LAMs) will implement to further enhance and reinforce the primary goals of our respective professions. One question that keeps coming to mind is how the archives field—specifically as it relates to museums— will survive and adapt in the post-COVID-19 world. People will continue to turn to publicly available research material to learn and educate others. -

In our opinion, the accompanying consolidated financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the consolidated financial position of the Consolidated Entity as at March 31, 2020 and its results of operations, changes in net financial assets, and cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with Canadian public sector accounting standards. Basis for Opinion We conducted our audit in accordance with Canadian generally accepted auditing standards. Our responsibilities under those standards are further described in the Auditor's Responsibilities for the Audit of the Consolidated Financial Statements section of this report. -
First Nations
First Nations The City of Vancouver recognizes that we are on the unceded, ancestral, and traditional homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓ əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱ wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. The Broadway planning process aims to recognize the living culture and history of the xʷməθkʷəy̓ əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱ wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations. xʷməθkʷəy̓ əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱ wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations have a spiritual, cultural, and economic connection to the land since time immemorial. Vancouver and 95 percent of British Columbia are located on the unceded territory of First Nations. The term unceded acknowledges the dispossession of the land and the inherent rights that the xʷməθkʷəy̓ əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱ wú7mesh (Squamish) and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations hold to the territory. The term serves as a reminder that they will always retain their jurisdiction and relationships within their territory. Latino Museum Studies Program Practicum 1 Archives of American Art (AAA) The Latina Papers: Primary Sources for Documents of Latin American and Latino Art (In partnership with the International Center for the Arts of the Americas (ICAA)) Joshua T. Franco, Ph.D., National Collector, AAA Project Overview: With over thirty million items and counting, the Archives of American Art (AAA) is the world’s largest repository for documents related to the history of American art. In 2015, AAA hired a Latino Collections Specialist to focus on acquiring papers related to US Latino/a art. Building on AAA’s holdings resulting from past initiatives particularly in south Florida and Texas, the Latino Collections Specialist made further acquisitions from New York, Denver, Florida, the Midwest, and the West Coast including: Cheech Marin (Oral History), Paul Ramirez Jonas, Andres Serrano, Kathy Vargas, Victor Zamudio-Taylor, and Tony Ortega. AAA’s mission is to acquire primary sources—letters, diaries, journals, notes, and other unpublished writings, financial records, photographs, sketchbooks, scrapbooks, audio and video recordings, rare printed material, and the like—from artists, critics, collectors, art historians and others. As part of the International Center for the Arts of the Americas’ (ICAA) landmark Documents of Latin American and Latino Art digital archive project, The Latinx Papers seeks to identify and make accessible key documents related to the history of Latinx art as well as the trajectory of key artists and cultural figures. During this multi-year initiative, the ICAA will build upon its existing holdings with a new selection of primary documents focused on individual artists and groups as well as on critics, curators and cultural representatives. -

THE ALMA MATER SOCIETY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA VANCOUVER Number & Title #I-5 Policy on Communication with the Musqueam Indian Band Effective Date: August 1st, 2018 Approval Date: August 1st, 2018 Policy Type: Internal Policy Review Date: This policy shall be reviewed every three (3) years. Responsible Body: Executive Committee Authority: AMS Code of Procedure Section II, Article 11(1) ͞Council may create external and internal policies as well as combined policies.͟ Purpose and Goals: This policy is designed to: 1) Ensure that the Society is aware of all communication with the Musqueam Indian Band made on behalf of the Society, so that there is not conflicting contact made by different members or representatives of the AMS. 2) Ensure that all proper protocol is being followed when contacting the Musqueam Indian Band. 3) Promote a good ongoing relationship with Musqueam. As the AMS is situated on the unceded and traditional territory of the Musqueam peoples, having a good relationship with the Musqueam is a top priority for the Society. Applicability: This policy is applicable to all AMS Executives, Council Members, Constituencies and Staff when acting in their official capacities within the AMS, and to all AMS clubs. Exclusions: 1) This policy does not apply to students at large. Definitions: For the purposes of this policy and in all other policies in which they are not otherwise defined: Musqueam shall mean the Musqueam Indian Band. Protocol shall mean all protocols and procedures laid out by the Musqueam that dictate how to properly interact with the Musqueam Indian Band. -

Dolores Huerta 1930 - present • Leader of the farmworkers movement and led a grape boycott that reached an estimated 17 million people • Born in New Mexico • Believed in political organizing to effect change • She led voter registration drives and fought for economic justice for workers • While she worked in California most, her efforts impacted the world “Si se puede.” – Dolores Huerta, she came up with the phrase that is associated with Chávez “Dolores helped lead a worldwide grape boycott that forced growers to agree to some of the country’s first farm worker contracts. And ever since she has fought to give more people a seat at the table.” – President Barack Obama Ruth Acty 1913 - 1998 • In 1940, she became the first African American teacher in Berkeley public schools • Born in Oakland • Taught English to kids and adults, as well as, French, literature and drama • Worked 50 years as a teacher • Taught at Longfellow and at Lincoln (now Malcolm X), middle school at Burbank Junior High (now West Campus), and also taught at the Adult School “Miss Ruth Acty’s significance in the history of the Bay Area is unparalleled. Their target is a crown of rock called The Needles, 1.5 miles away on the opposite side of the channel. Kayakers, paddling against a light chop, herd the swimmers into small groups. Wet-suited limbs begin to flash and lime-green caps bob as the flood carries everyone under the bridge and into San Francisco Bay. On board the support boat, a converted water taxi called Heron, spectators cheer on family members and then crowd the railings to admire the scenery. Terns, gulls, and pelicans soar overhead. Porpoises break the surface, trailing the wake as the boat drifts bayward. Everyone has a camera out as the sun rises behind the arching span of the bridge. It is a perfect Bay moment. In a National Geographic feature on the Bay in 1981 the writer Cliff Tarpy announced from the bridge that “here, I had found, this great bay offers its finest vantage point.” While it’s probably not so much a secret today that the Golden Gate offers a splendid view, it’s still the finest place to think about the entirety of the 21st century San Francisco Bay. -
