Vernon Jordan sayy.... "BLACK VOTE GIVETH, AND ' BLACK VOTE TAKETH AWAY"

New Political Motto Of Blacks in South

BALTIMORE, MD. The revolutionary chanue which occurred when

six black men were elected to public office in Greene County, Alabama, recently is a forerunner of political thinus to come in the South, accordinu to Vernon

Jordan, Director, Southern Reuional Council.

Jordan spoke before an overflow luncheon mnnting at the national

convention of Delta Siuma Theta Sorority.

It is gnnerally felt that Jordan, throuuh personal leadership and special technical assistance, has done as much as any person in helpinu blacks to ^uis^r to vote throuuhout the deep south. Althouuh only 33, he has been prominently mentioned as a potential candidate for Mayor of Atlanta, Georuia.

Jordan said increased black rngistratiot is a tremendous new influence in the body politics of the south. He pointed out that in 19-44, total black re- yistration in 11 southern states was 250, 000, which was five percent of the voting population in these states. VERNON JORDAN 2 -

In 1969, there werce 3. 2 million Mack: re^tered voters to the 11

f^utlm™ states, which ^^^^to 62 percent of toe souther He

noted toto in Wssto^ppL there were only 22, 000' blackc ^toto^d to 1960 ,

and toto year the total is 251 000. In Aibam in ^60, blacks eligible to vote

totaled 66, 000, and this year the number is 273, 000.

"There is ^jor toty to toe south where the btock voto to not the

decisive factor, " .toM^ "Our people to the south are now ¡^ytog:

Jordan described black elected officials as the "most exciting

phenomenon on the America political scene. " In 1965» he saW, • there were

approximately 70 black elected officials in the south. Presently, there are

about 479 in the south and 600 in the north.

White America ■will have to become accustomed to hlack:

challenging them for public office, " Jordan stated.

He added that "very rapidly, black community organizations have

learned that their demands, no matter how legimate, generally must be backed

with political muscle. They are learning that political participation is a

route to justice and the realization of their aspirations. Thus, these black

community organizations have political aw^ireness as a major emphasis. "

Dear Mr. J ordan:

I have made application to Delta Sigma Theta Sorority for scholarship aid in the amount of $2000.00. I have also requested recommendations from Attorney Howard Moore and Mr. Hollowell.

You might consider the following data in writing your recommendation: I am a third year student concentrating in the area of General Trial Practice; I plan to practice in the southeast region, preferrably Georgia; I have a 75 or 76 average; I will be graduating June 1970,-tuition at Emory is $1800.00, my total expenses for the year shoul range in the area of $5000.00, and I expect to receive $1000.00 from NDEA; I have an $8oo.00 scholarship from Legal Defense and my summer earnings should be $500.00. Don't forget to mention that I am not financial with Delta.

Emory is forwarding my transcript and I will forward a statement of my assets and expenses for the school year. I hope this information is sufficient. Thank you very much.
