A word of welcome from the conference organizer Dear conference delegates, Welcome to the Nordic Africa Days 2014 in Uppsala! The Nordic Africa Days (NAD) is the biennial conference which for the past six years has been organized rotatively in each of the Nordic countries. Already since 1969 the Nordic Africa Institute has organised this regular gathering of Nordic scholars studying African issues, and the event has for the past 15 years been formalized under the name of the Nordic Africa Days. The theme of this year’s conference is Misbehaving States and Behaving Citizens? Questions of Governance in African States. We are proud to host two distinguished keynote speakers, Dr Mo Ibrahim and Associate Professor Morten Jerven, addressing the theme from different angles in their speeches entitled “Why Governance Matters” and “Africa by Numbers: Knowledge & Governance”. The conference is funded by long-standing and committed support from the Swedish, Finnish, Norwegian and Icelandic governments. This year, we are also particularly pleased to be able to facilitate participation of about 25 researchers based on the African continent through a generous contribution from Sida (The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency). Providing a platform for Nordic and African researchers to meet and cooperate at NAD is becoming ever more important, in addition to creating a prime meeting place for researchers on Africa within the Nordic region. The main conference venue is Blåsenhus, one of the newest campuses within Uppsala University, situated opposite the Uppsala Castle and surrounded by the Uppsala Botanical Gardens. This particular area of Uppsala has a historical past that goes back 350 years in time and offers many interesting places to visit. -

Museum of American Finance AUDIO GUIDE TOUR 1 48 Wall Street/Murals The largest object on display at the Museum of American Finance isn’t the bull and bear statue or the statue of Alexander Hamilton. You’re actually standing INSIDE the largest object! In 1797 Alexander Hamilton’s Bank of New York laid the cornerstone for its first building right here at 48 Wall Street. You can see the cornerstone outside where William Street meets Wall Street. Hamilton founded the Bank in 1784 not long after the last of the British troops left American soil for good. The current building is the third Bank of New York headquarters on this site. It opened in 1929 and was active until the Bank acquired the Irving Trust Company and moved into its towering art deco skyscraper at 1 Wall Street in 1988. Like many bank buildings from this era, the architect Benjamin Wistar Morris designed the Grand Mezzanine to convey a sense of strength and power, both in its size and its extensive use of marble and limestone. These materials invoke a sense of security, making the building look like a solid fortress, protecting clients’ money at all costs. Remember, FDIC insurance didn’t come along until 1933. If you look up at the north and east walls of the Grand Mezzanine, you’ll see eight murals painted by J. Monroe Hewlett, an accomplished turn-of-the-century muralist. Alexander Hamilton is front and center in the murals on the north side. These depict scenes from the Bank of New York’s history. -

TELEVISUAL CULTURE Roberts Visions of Electric Media Ivy Roberts Visions of Electric Media Television in the Victorian and Machine Ages Visions of Electric Media Televisual Culture Televisual culture encompasses and crosses all aspects of television – past, current and future – from its experiential dimensions to its aesthetic strategies, from its technological developments to its crossmedial extensions. The ‘televisual’ names a condition of transformation that is altering the coordinates through which we understand, theorize, intervene, and challenge contemporary media culture. Shifts in production practices, consumption circuits, technologies of distribution and access, and the aesthetic qualities of televisual texts foreground the dynamic place of television in the contemporary media landscape. They demand that we revisit concepts such as liveness, media event, audiences and broadcasting, but also that we theorize new concepts to meet the rapidly changing conditions of the televisual. The series aims at seriously analyzing both the contemporary specificity of the televisual and the challenges uncovered by new developments in technology and theory in an age in which digitization and convergence are redrawing the boundaries of media. WITH DETERMINATION AND FORTITUDE 195 With Determination and Fortitude We Come to Vote: Black Organization and Resistance to Voter Suppression in Mississippi by Michael Vinson Williams On July 2, 1946, brothers Medgar and Charles Evers, along with four friends, decided they would vote in their hometown of Decatur, Missis- sippi. Both brothers had registered without incident but when the men returned to cast their ballots they were met by a mob of armed whites. The confrontation grew in intensity with each step toward the polling place. After a few nerve-racking moments of yelling and shoving, the Evers group retreated, but the harassment did not end. Medgar Evers recalled that while they were walking away some of the whites followed them and that one man in a 1941 Ford “leaned out with a shotgun, keep- ing a bead on us all the time and we just had to walk slowly and wait for him to kill us …. They didn’t kill us but they didn’t end it, either.” The African American men went home, retrieved guns of their own, and returned to the polling station but decided to leave the weapons in the car. Locating the Chopi Xylophone Ensembles of Southern Mozambique Published on Ethnomusicology Review (https://ethnomusicologyreview.ucla.edu) Locating the Chopi Xylophone Ensembles of Southern Mozambique By Brian Hogan - University of California, Los Angeles Introduction The timbila xylophone is the primary musical instrument of the elaborately choreographed and musically accompanied Migodo dance dramas of the Chopi people of Southern Mozambique. This tradition unlike most others studied in Africa to this date, consists of large orchestras of xylophones that perform extended pieces divided into programmatic movements. These movements consist of dance, music, and sung texts carefully woven together into a performance genre taken by many scholars as evidence of the influence of Indonesian practices on the continent because of its similarity to Javanese and Balinese Gamelans. In this article however, I argue that the musical traditions of the Chopi are and should be theorized as distinctly African, containing numerous musical and textual elements that reflect African social relations, musical aesthetics, and daily realities. The Ngodo (sing. form of Migodo) functions as an important mode of social commentary in Chopi society, where it conveys elements of Chopi culture and balances the power of local rulers through creating a socially acceptable forum for criticism. Migodo also serve a similar function in communities of migrant miners where makeshift xylophones are fashioned, and new adapted Migodo are composed. Relatively little research has been done in Chopi mining communities, and to highlight the potential of such research I look to the works of David Coplan (1994; 1995; 1999), who has done extensive research in South Africa and Lesotho on performance forms in migrant mining communities. -
