The Development of the British Army During the Wars with France, 1793-1815'
1 ABSTRACT Keith Bartlett, 'The Development of the British Army during the Wars with France, 1793-1815' . The British Army that fought the engagement at Waterloo in 1815, was outwardly little changed from that which was engaged in the initial campaigns of the Wars, twenty-two years previously. Line upon line of red-coated, musket-armed infantry, manoeuvred as chess pieces across open fields, deciding the issue by volley and bayonet, having spent a hungry night exposed to rain and cold. The cavalry were still beautifully and often impractically clad, and were always seeking the decisive charge, on their unfed and often sickly mounts. The Army's commander still viewed his troops as 'the scum of the earth', who were rarely paid, and predominantly enlisted for life. It would therefore appear that little had altered from 1793 to 1815, and that this will be a study of continuity rather than change. However, this thesis will show that despite outward appearances, the Army that took the field at Waterloo was intrinsically different from the one that entered the conflict in 1793, being modernised in line with other institutions of state, and other European armies. This thesis is first and foremost intended to be a contribution to the history of the British Army from the outbreak of war with Revolutionary France in 1793, to the reduction of the forces after the battle of Waterloo in 1815. It proceeds from an assumption that the understanding of not only that history, but the history of the developing British state, will be significantly advanced through a study of the operation of, and the changes which took place within, the Army during the Wars with France. -

Doctoral Committee
THE HUMAN HORSE: EQUINE HUSBANDRY, ANTHROPOMORPHIC HIERARCHIES, AND DAILY LIFE IN LOWER SAXONY, 1550-1735 BY AMANDA RENEE EISEMANN DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2012 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Associate Professor Craig Koslofsky, Chair Associate Professor Clare Crowston Professor Richard Burkhardt Professor Mark Micale Professor Mara Wade ii Abstract This dissertation examines how human-animal relationships were formed through daily equine trade networks in early modern Germany. As reflections of human cultural values and experiences, these relationships had a significant impact in early modern Braunschweig- Lüneburg both on the practice of horse breeding and veterinary medicine and on the gendering of certain economic resources, activities, and trades. My study relies on archival and cultural sources ranging from the foundational documents of the Hannoverian stud farm in Celle, tax records, guild books, and livestock registers to select pieces of popular and guild art, farrier guides, and farmers’ almanacs. By combining traditional social and economic sources with those that offer insight on daily life, this dissertation is able to show that in early modern Germany, men involved with equine husbandry and horse breeding relied on their economic relationship with horses' bodies as a means to construct distinct trade and masculine identities. Horses also served as social projections of their owners’ bodies and their owners’ culture, representing a unique code of masculinity that connected and divided individuals between social orders. Male identities, in particular, were molded and maintained through the manner of an individual’s contact with equestrian trade and through the public demonstration of proper recognition of equine value. -

To View the 557Th History
THE 557 FIELD ARTILLERY BATTALION The history of the 557th Field Artillery Battalion quite properly begins with a brief history of its basic weapon, the 155mm self-propelled gun, for the entire career of a field artillery battalion; or any combat unit, whether it be infantry, tank destroyer group, or anti-aircraft unit, is determined largely by the type of gun it uses. It is scarcely an exaggeration to say that a field artillery battalion, or similar combat unit, exists for the sake of its gun – a demanding and sometimes cruel master. The fate of officers and men alike hang upon the part, which their gun may play in battle, and its success or failure is determined to a great extent by its mechanical characteristics. The calibre of the gun, its range, its maneuverability, its elevation and traverse, the type of shell fired – all are involved in determining the position of the gun in the field of combat, the type of target against which it will be directed, and hence, the duties of the men firing it. Upon these factors depend to a large extent, the relation of the whole battalion to the rest of the Army. Thus, the 557th Field Artillery Battalion occupied an unusual position in the Army of the United States due to the unusual features of its gun, which must be considered before going further. With the enormous stress placed upon: ease and speed of mobility in this war, it became necessary to revise and remodel some of the weapons of the heavy artillery, in which group the 155mm self- propelled gun is correctly placed.
