To this Essay on the " Folk-lore of North Wales," was awarded the first prize at the Welsh National Eisteddfod, held in London, in 1887. The prize consisted of a silver medal, and £20. The adjudicators were Canon Silvan Evans, Professor Rhys, and Mr Egerton PhiHimore, editor of the Gymmrodor. By an arrangement with the Eisteddfod Committee, the work became the property of the pubHshers, Messrs. Woodall, Minshall, & Co., who, at the request of the author, entrusted it to him for revision, and the present Volume is the result of his labours. Before undertaking the publishing of the work, it was necessary to obtain a sufficient number of subscribers to secure the publishers from loss. Upwards of two hundred ladies and gentlemen gave their names to the author, and the work of pubhcation was commenced.

    251. Chapter VIII Witchcraft as Ma/efice: Witchcraft Case Studies, The Third Phase of The Welsh Antidote to Witchcraft. Witchcraft as rna/efice cases were concerned specifically with the practice of witchcraft, cases in which a woman was brought to court charged with being a witch, accused of practising rna/efice or premeditated harm. The woman was not bringing a slander case against another. She herself was being brought to court by others who were accusing her of being a witch. Witchcraft as rna/efice cases in early modem Wales were completely different from those witchcraft as words cases lodged in the Courts of Great Sessions, even though they were often in the same county, at a similar time and heard before the same justices of the peace. The main purpose of this chapter is to present case studies of witchcraft as ma/efice trials from the various court circuits in Wales. Witchcraft as rna/efice cases in Wales reflect the general type of early modern witchcraft cases found in other areas of Britain, Europe and America, those with which witchcraft historiography is largely concerned. The few Welsh cases are the only cases where a woman was being accused of witchcraft practices. Given the profound belief system surrounding witches and witchcraft in early modern Wales, the minute number of these cases raises some interesting historical questions about attitudes to witches and ways of dealing with witchcraft. The records of the Courts of Great Sessions1 for Wales contain very few witchcraft as rna/efice cases, sometimes only one per county. The actual number, however, does not detract from the importance of these cases in providing a greater understanding of witchcraft typology for early modern Wales.

    AN EXAMINATION OF THE CELWYDD GOLAU Presented for fulfillment of the MPhil in Welsh in 2015 Bradford Marr McMullen i Summary: Celwydd golau, or “light lie”, is the Welsh term for the tall tale. Tall tales, a genre of folklore characterized by their exaggerated qualities, are common internationally, although scholarship on the genre has focused on the American examples. The goal of this study is to provide an overview of the genre as it exists in the Welsh folk tradition, making use of the folklore archive at St. Fagans National History Museum. The first chapter of this study is a review of existing literature on the tall tale, as well as an examination of the American tall tale tradition and the history of Welsh folklore collecting. The second chapter examines celwydd golau about animals found in the archive at St. Fagans National History Museum, while the third chapter examines celwydd golau about linguistic mistakes in Welsh and English. The fourth chapter concludes the study by summarizing the previous chapters and offering any final thoughts as well as potential further avenues of study. There are also four appendices to this study. Appendix A offers summaries of the celwydd golau about animals, while Appendix B offers summaries of the celwydd golau about linguistic mistakes. Appendix C offers some brief biographical data about several of the tellers mentioned multiple times, as well as a list of celwydd golau associated with them. Appendix D consists of a series of maps, documenting the locations from which each example was collected.

Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1966-67 Disgrifiad / Description Journal of the testator's father, Rev William Rees (1839-1919), Independent minister at Llechryd, co. Cardigan, who, with part of his congregation, had been locked out of the Old Chapel on 26 February 1880 (NLW MS 12863F). Two obvious reasons for this dispute were the minister's uncompromising views on temperance and his adherence to the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg. The journal commences on 2 March 1880 and the last entry was made some time after Christmas 1917. The contents of this volume may be broadly divided into three sections: the author's career and the history of the new Tabernacle at Llechryd, 1880-1903 and 1911-[?1918] (pp. 1-228 and 457-94), a section which began with his wife's death, and contains, in addition to material such as that found in the first section, a considerable volume of verse, 1904-10 (pp. 229-436); and a brief sketch of his life (pp. 437- 57).
