Adam Ottley was Bishop of St. Davids from 1712 until his death in 1723, and his nephew, also Adam Ottley, was the principal registrar of the diocese from 1713 to 1752. The papers which relate to the proceedings in Convocation include a number of letters from Francis Atterbury, who became in 1713 and in 1721 indulged in a Jacobite plot known as "Atterbury's Plot". They also include letters addressed to Ottley by William Wake, both as and as , Bishop Thomas Watson, who was deprived of the see of St Davids in 1699, Griffith Jones of , Moses Williams the antiquary, and William Jones, Principal of College, , who writes in connection with an effort to secure the prebend of for Daniel Durel as an inducement to him to remain as schoolmaster at Cowbridge; papers relating to a dispute between Ottley and the Fellows of St John's College, Cambridge, touching the right of patronage of the churches of Llanarth and Llanina; testimonials to curates and schoolmasters; petitions, including one from the tenants of the lordships of Llandilo villa et patria for a restitution of the copyhold court; papers relating to a dispute between Ottley and his predecessor, Bishop Bisse, concerning dilapidations in the diocese; papers relating to repairs at the Palace at Abergwili, etc. Adam Ottley the registrar's papers are more numerous and consist mainly of business letters from his deputies for the several archdeaconries of Brecknock, Carmarthen, St Davids, and Cardigan; letters from his fellow officials, , father and son, who held the chancellorship from 1713 to 1753, and Charles Brereton who acted for them; letters from the Bishops of St Davids-Ottley, Smalbroke and Claggett; letters from candidates for the office of principal registrar, and from applicants for vacancies in the deputy registries especially in times of illness, or misfortunes, of the deputies; and returns of accounts of fees received at the registries. A number of returns of fees for the archdeaconry of Brecknock date from the time of Ottley's predecessor, Robert Lucy. There are also some documents which throw light on the activities of the ecclesiastical courts - the letters from Chancellor Edward Jones show how jealous he was of their power, and his fear lest the people should hold them in contempt. The manors include:- The Barony of Kemes, , Bayvill and Crigie, , Newcastle, Redwalles and Kevenllymwydd, Clawddcerrig, , Llandilo Abercowyn and the town or borough of Newport. The extant court rolls up to the middle of the sixteenth century are few, but the series for several of the manors during the reigns of Elizabeth and James I (especially during the lifetime of George Owen) is fairly complete and is in excellent condition. The court baron seems to have lost its importance as a court of justice from about the middle of the seventeenth century, and ceased to be held in the majority of the manors. At the same time, too, the main business of the court leet, apart from its normal work of 'presenting' defaulting homagers and the appointment of local officials, was concerned more and more with the problem of stray sheep and encroachments of the commons. (From 1745 to 1885 the presentments at the Easter and Michaelmas leets each year in several of the manors are remarkably complete and reveal comparatively few gaps). In addition to the court rolls, proper there are occasional rolls and files of subsidiary documents of considerable interest and importance, such as suit or homagers' rolls, charges to the grand jury from time to time, declarations in causes (some in the autograph of George Owen), copies of pleadings, particulars of debts and legal costs, warrants and precepts to local officials, which admirably illustrate the technique of legal procedure, etc., in local manorial courts during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Other manorial records include about sixty rentals and surveys of certain manors from 1434 to 1764; six ministers' accounts (Richard II to Henry VIII); and four exceptionally valuable toll books of local fairs - three of the fair of St Meygan held at Eglwyswrw (1599-1632), and one of 'Ffair Gurig' at Newport, Pem., in 1603. 3. Documents relating to Local Government affairs in the Hundred of Kemes, &c., 1587-1837. Of the hundred odd documents brought together in this group, some fifty relate to the activities and anxieties of the Deputy-Lieutenants of Pembrokeshire during the first half of the seventeenth century; they include general muster books and divers inventories and notes of armour, etc. The remainder, with one important exception - a court roll of the Queen's Hundred Court of the Hundred of Kemes (held by George Owen, as sheriff of Pembrokeshire, 29-30 Eliz., and a few coroner's warrants of the eighteenth century - illustrate the administrative and judicial functions of the justices of the peace in North Pembrokeshire between 1624 and 1837. Among these there is an important file of documents of the year 1631 throwing interesting light on the operation of the Elizabethan Poor Law and the Statute of Artificers in the Hundred of Kemes. 4. Ancient Deeds, Feet of Fines, Bonds, &c., relating to the transfer of lands and the mortgage of properties in the Barony of Kemes and elsewhere between 1546 and 1759 (forty-one documents). 5. Sundry Papers and Documents relating to Legal Actions touching persons and affairs within the Barony of Kemes from 1546 to 1770, - seventy-seven documents, as follows:- (a) Council of the Marches in Wales (1546-1682) - twelve documents, including bills of complaint by William Owen, George Owen and Alban Owen respectively against the burgesses of the town of Newport, and one interesting petition relating to a dispute as to a right of way between Bronwydd and the market town of . (b) The Great Sessions and other Courts (Henry VIII to 1770) - fifty-seven documents, including several cases in the Chancery Court of the Great Sessions of Pembroke, Cardigan and Carmarthen; enclosure of commons, 1614; alleged strike against the payment of tithes in the parish of (1650-4). (c) Miscellaneous Cases for Opinion and Particulars of Legal Costs (1670-1770), - eight documents. 5. Miscellaneous Estate Papers, Accounts and Correspondence relating to the Barony of Kemes and the Town of Newport (1653-1847), - eighty-five documents, including some wills and inventories of goods; the tithes of Nevern; perambulation of the boundaries of Kemes; turf-cutting disputes in the parish of Nevern; various enclosure disputes- 'tai unos', cottages, gardens, etc., on Newport and Kemes Commons; a copy of resolutions passed at Mountain Hall, Brynberian, November 20 1812; wreck of sea at Dinas and elsewhere; protest of the men of Little Newcastle upon the abandonment of their court leet; the account of the pound keeper at Spite; the ancient custom of ale prize in the borough of Newport; distribution of corn at Newport during the 'Hungry Forties'; fair and pitching rights at Newport; 'wirepulling' for the mayorship of Newport (1831-45) including the contest between the 'Orange' and the 'Blue' factions in 1831; and lists of the aldermen and burgesses of Newport in 1836 and 1847. POWIS CASTLE 1933075 Ffynhonnell / Source The Right Honourable The Earl of Powis. Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1932-33 Disgrifiad / Description An extensive group of documents and papers, particularly rich in manorial records from the sixteenth century to the nineteenth, which has not yet been fully examined. It is only possible at present to draw attention to one or two classes of documents which are now being sorted. Among the manorial records are two volumes of copies of rentals and surveys of the lordship of Oswestry from 1577 to 1652, including a survey made in the latter year by virtue of a Commission under an Act of Parliament for the sale of lands and estates forfeited to the Commonwealth for treason. The manorial court rolls, which number many hundreds, are distributed among the following boroughs, hundreds, lordships, and manors in Montgomeryshire and Salop:- Brithdir, , Cedewain, Chirbury (with records of the sheriff's hundred court), Duparts, Halcetor, Kerry, , Llanfyllin, , Mechain (Uchcoed and Iscoed), Mochnant, Montgomery, Oswestry, Pool, Teirtref, Tirymynech and Ystrad Marchell, or Streetmarshall as it is generally called. An early seventeenth-century manuscript, which bears the autographs of Edward and Owen Vaughan of Llwydiarth, contains (in addition to questions with legal opinion by Sir John Lloyd, serjeant-at-law, concerning the custom of the barony of Powis) a rental of the lordship of Kynlleth Owen, and an assessment of a lewn of £110 levied in January, 1596, upon the several hundreds of Montgomeryshire to buy more powder, match and bullets, and towards the providing of 'dartes pickeaxes and shovells'. Another interesting group of documents relates to the lead and silver mines of Cardiganshire from the middle of the eighteenth century to the early years of the nineteenth. This group includes account books of expenditure in wages and subsistence at Esgair Mwyn mine under the superintendence of Lewis Morris from 1752 to 1755; Esgair Mwyn accounts, 1795-1802; Aberystwyth Anchor Smelting House accounts, 1789-95; Esgair Mwyn and Fron Goch mines bargain books, 1792-8, etc. The account books for 1753 contain references, in the autograph of Lewis Morris, to the riots which took place in February of that year when he was taken as a prisoner to Cardigan gaol. One volume consists of abstracts of the accounts of Lewis Morris from 1752 to 1755 with a statement of the standing improvements made by him at Esgair Mwyn. These abstracts have been annotated in red ink and the notes are occasionally signed with the initials J. P., so that it would appear that this is the volume of abstracts which Lewis Morris submitted to John Tidy and John Paynter who were appointed by the Treasury to examine his accounts in 1755. BODEWRYD 1933078 Ffynhonnell / Source Mr Alfred F Sotheby, London. Blwyddyn / Year Adroddiad Blynyddol / Annual Report 1932-33 Disgrifiad / Description THE BODEWRYD MANUSCRIPTS AND DOCUMENTS, consisting of over 100 manuscripts and nearly 600 documents, supplementing the large collection deposited by Mr. Sotheby in 1931. A large number of these manuscripts were written by or for Edward Wynne, LLD, DCL, Chancellor of the (died 1755), and by several members of the important families with which he was connected. There is a copy of a Latin speech delivered at Beaumaris by Dr , from 1667 to 1673, and some manuscripts by his son, Robert Morgan, DD, once headmaster of Ruthin Grammar School and afterwards rector of Ross and a canon of Hereford, and by his son-in-law, Dr , bishop of Bangor, 1689-1701, and of Hereford, 1701-12. Chancellor Wynne's mother was a daughter of Bishop Robert Morgan, and his father was Edward Wynne, rector of Llanddyfnan, who died in 1682. Some of the booklets of sermon notes in this collection may be by this Edward Wynne, others are certainly the work of his brother Robert (died 1720), rector of . A number of the manuscripts are earlier than the time of Chancellor Wynne. Of these the following may be particularly noted:- a. WELSH POETRY from the fourteenth century to the beginning of the seventeenth, transcribed by Sion Phylip, the Ardudwy poet. b. AWDLAU WILIAM KYNWAL. Forty-three odes composed and written by Wiliam Kynwal between 1567 and 1576, accompanied by sketches of the arms of the persons addressed, except the odlau merched which are illustrated by quaint drawings of women. The documents, which date from the thirteenth century to the early years of the nineteenth, supplement those which were deposited in 1931. A large number of them relate to lawsuits, particularly to a lengthy suit between Chancellor Wynne and the Mostyn family arising out of the purchase of the Bodowir estate, and to several actions for the possession of pews in churches. There are also numerous letters and papers which relate to the Plas Einion estate in Denbighshire. A fifteenth-century manuscript containing copies of records of the temporalities of the . The records include an extent of the temporalities made in the sixth year of Prince Edward [? the Black Prince, 1335], of which there are other copies in Harleian MSS 696 and 4,776 which formed the bases of the text printed in the Record of Caernarvon, 1838. The beginning of this copy is missing, and the first folios are imperfect, but the text agrees in the main with that printed in the Record of Caernarvon from pages 93 to 115. There are some differences in arrangement, and in some of the totals, and a great difference in the spelling of proper names. It is, however, possible that a number of these have been incorrectly transcribed in the printed work. The extent is followed by copies of a compotus of David Daron, Dean of Bangor, [1399], which relates to the same temporalities, an inquisition respecting rents due towards the altar of St Daniel, 1439, an inquisition of the lands of the bishopric taken in 1436, a writ to cause the Dean and Chapter of Bangor to render a compotus of the issues of their temporalities, with documents relating thereto, 1447. 2.
