Amount of gas and slurry were measured using calibrated biogas burner and weight balance respectively. The qualities of the slurry were analyzed in the laboratory using Kjeldahl and ash method respectively. Economic evaluation and comparison of the biodigester was carried out using cost-benefit analysis. Gas production and total-N was higher for a single layered and above ground plastic biodigester than others. Fermented slurry contained larger nitrogen content than fresh cow dung in both models of biodigester. The geomembrane plastic biogas plant gave higher net benefit than fixed-dome biogas plant. The biogas technology was found to increase income generation through increased crop production with the use of nutritive slurry as organic fertilizer and solve the problem of fuel shortage in the rural areas. Environmental impact assessment of the technology was studied and 3 3 found that from the use of a geomembrane plastic biodigester, 360 m of CO2 and 600 m CH4 was prevented from emitting in to the atmosphere and save 0.562 hectare of forest per year from being deforested and hence attributed towards the decrease in global warming.

The combined thermogravimetric (TG)/ Fourtier transform infrared (FTIR)/ mass spectrometry (MS) were employed to analyze the evolved gaseous products. The results revealed that the thermal decomposition of cow-dung occurs in three steps assigned to drying of the sample, fast thermal decomposition and further cracking. The complete combustion of cow-dung occurs at 500°C, while during pyrolysis the total weight loss of 58.91 wt.% was found at 950°C. The release of gaseous product during pyrolysis was CO2, CO, methanol, formaldehyde, formic acid, acetic acid, whereas the products during combustion were CO2, CO. This paper was produced by IPE Triple Line for the Shell Foundation, in close partnership with Sistema.bio, a social enterprise which manufactures, markets, and sells bio-digesters to low-income farming communities in Central America, East Africa, and South Asia. Context Biogas is an environmentally friendly renewable fuel produced by the breakdown of organic waste. Bio- digesters facilitate this process and capture the methane produced by the anaerobic digestion of waste. The organic waste is primarily animal manure, although specialised bio-digesters can also process a range of other organic material. Biogas is a versatile fuel that can be used for cooking, heating, lighting, power generation, as well as in transport applications. In addition, bio-digesters produce a substrate called bio-slurry as a by-product. This is an effective organic fertiliser which has a significant positive impact on yields and on long-term soil health.
